Re: Baystar medic arrested at scene in La Porte

I cannot attest to the specific incident described here, but I know virtually

all of the parties involved in this incident and I agree it is an unfortunate

situation no matter what the circumstances. All are persons of good character

and so it is important in my opinion to let the facts come forward with time. It

appears in their own way each party was concerned for the patient from their own

perspective.

I would like to say that Chief Nolan and the LaPorte EMS staff as well as the

City Manager and City Council are working very hard to assure that (1) LPEMS is

called when a 911 emergency medical situation occurs in LaPorte and (2) that

private ambulance services responding in LaPorte are properly staffed and

equipped via the permitting process, (3) quality patient care is better assured

for the citizens of LP by utilizing the rapid response capabilities of the MICU

system there. With over 150 private ambulance services in the Houston area, the

city of LaPorte has taken steps to try to regulate the quality of private

ambulance service for the citizens of LaPorte by requiring the permitting of

ambulances responding in their city.

If you would like more information on the LP ordinance go to www.ghemsc.org and

to the Municipalities with EMS Ordinances link.

I sincerely hope this all can be worked through to a positive end.

Wes,

Agreed.

It is interesting that a designated emergency provider of an area can

request another provider into an area on a mutual aide request and license,

permits and protected areas go out the window.

It is unfortunate that in this instance it appears:

* The call originated from a residence

* The call did NOT go through the designated emergency provider for the

response address.

* The non designated provider accepted the call and responded

* The non designated provider called to inform the designated provider

* The designated provider acknowledged the request AND sent someone (2

cars) the first was not to provide patient care

* The designated provider stepped in $#!+ along the way (if the news

releases are correct)

* The PD/LE also stepped in $#!+ AND walked on the new carpet. (if the

news releases are correct)

Looks like the lawyers will win, both plaintiff and defendant attorneys will

be compensated to litigate this matter. The patient losses as does EMS in

general.

This really is a very good example of a litany of errors.

Hope you and everyone on the list has a safe end to this year and a warm

welcome to 2006.

Silly me but I was wondering.........??

Why was the Supervisor standing in the road and NOT providing care, if

his service was the correct agency... Seems abandonment for no

treatment?? Just wondering..

Seems that way to me as well. As I mentioned before, why

couldn't this supervisor supervise these Baystar medics to make sure

they didn't do anything out of sorts until his medics arrived to take

over? This is under the assumption (cringe) that this supervisor was

totally unequipped (meaning medical equipment wise, not mental) to deal

with an emergency. Not meaning to offend, but this whole thing sounds

like a massive Charlie Fox (anybody who doesn't know what that means,

e-mail me off list for the potty mouth version).

I never heard back from Baystar. Anybody hear of the medical

status of the medic or any update on the initial patient? Then again,

if the lawyers are starting to circle down there, we might not hear

anything for a while I'd guess.
