Chlorine is well known to increase the likelihood of having a seizure in susceptible individuals, especially children. My daughter Tasya has always had this problem but there are things to do to possibly (important term as id does not help everyone) alleviate the reaction. First off, 500-1000mg of taurine is needed before going into a pool with chlorine. Not only is it a neuroinhibitory amino acid but it is a sulfur containing amino acid. This is important as sulfur is an important antagonist (for lack of a better term) to chlorine. This is why, epsom salts, aka magnesium sulfate is helpful after being in a pool as part of a bath. Another important addition are bicarbonates, as potassium and sodium bicarbonate. These are also important in buffering reactions caused by excessive chlorine and/or chlorides. Epileptics are notoriously low in bicarbonates as are autistic children which may in part explain why autistic children have a higher incidence of epilepsy than does the general population. Now most neurologists would dismiss this as being unimportant or inconsequential but my research says otherwise. Increasing the levels of bicarbonates does seem to increase the seizure threshold which is what we all strive for. A caveat, one needs to make sure that CO2 levels are low before trying this (simple blood test). In health, Mark Schauss www.carbonbased.com [ ] Mark Schauss help--chlorine toxicity Hi Mark, I am new to the board and a fellow member, Barb Hunte, told me you might provide some insight. My 11 year old son, who has autism also, had a seizure Sunday. Actually due to his condition in the aftermath, the Dr suspects multiple seizures. It started about 4 months ago Mikey was in the tub and when I went to get him out he was limp and seemingly unconscious. We called 911 and the ER Dr. said due to fatique, he may have fallen asleep in the tub. My wife and I actually suspected a small seizure. We had never seen anything in his 11 years like it before. Well Sunday it was really bad. The thing that nags at me is the conditions prior to the event. We had just put up our new pool. I know Mikey was drinking the pool water and although I did not see him go near the chlorine float, it is possible he may have ever lifted from the water and ingested some. That afternoon after coming into the home Mikey went up to his to take a nap. When I went upstairs to check on him, that's when I got one of the worst scares of my life. My wife took him to the ER. All blood tests came back normal and the CAT scan they did was normal. TOtday he goes in for an EEG. To get back to the thing that is nagging me, water & chemicals. My memory is fague, but I sear my wife had cleaned out the bathtub with a bleach related product or even Lysol just prior to my son's first episode. Now the full blown seizure after being in the pool. We have only seen this type of thig two times and both times Mikey was in or had been in the water; and most likely drinking it too. I know this is long winded and you are busy, but could this be a factor? I am crazy looking for a simple answer to a complicated problem? I can't remember exactly, but isn't there an " old saying " that says, the answer to a situation is usually the simplest one? Any suggestions, advice etc. would be a Godsend. Thanks again in advance, Mike

Anxiety can be caused by any number of things but two pop up more often than others. First and foremost would be electrolyte balance. We live in a world that stresses that balance, especially potassium. Second would be amino acids. The environmental toxicity each of is exposed to drains those amino acids (taurine and glycine) that are considered neuroinhibitory (calming). Of course to determine which area is the problem requires testing. A comprehensive blood test and a plasma amino acid assay are most helpful. In health, Mark Schauss [ ] Mark Schauss My daughter is 14 years old does not have epilepsy. But has alot of anxiety. Without taking anykind of medication is there anything else she can do to help herself. They had her on Zoloft but we took her off. She was only on that for about a month. It helped my daughter soooooooooooo much, because it is very detailed and specific to her body. It eliminated the guess work and gave me specifics for her body. This is unique to anyone else I have found to help. I've actually been able to use the report with my pediatrician to obtain an appointment with a metabolic specialist, and know exactly which supplements she needs to bring her stability. I actually just found out last week that her EEG is finally clear. We've been trying to do that for 14 months. I've been using Mark's recommendations (after an analysis) since November. Twice I have stopped all supplements in order to clear her body and allow me to figure out what was going on for her. Both times she became more unstable, and stability returned when I reintroduced Mark's supplements. The key was the detailed report, I now know exactly what's going on in her body. Mark is an extremely smart man. He has spent much time researching, and in his daughter's case he taught her neurologist important keys. If you have any more questions for me, I'll be glad to answer them. Barb [ ] Mark Schauss > > > > > > > > > My daughter is 14 years old does not have epilepsy. Durbin (D-IL) withdrew his amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill, considered a " must pass " piece of legislation which would have regulated supplements on military bases. Citizens for Health sent out a good email warning on the bill and their website had excellent information and links for action to contact your senators on the issue. Thannfully the volume of nationwide response pouring into Senators offices THROUGHOUT the country from all political and ideological positions was so large that Durbin had to withdraw the amendment.Let it sink in and congratulate yourselves. You all did it. It has been a long time since we had a victory like this in the alternative health movement. The last big one was in 1994 when we passed the Dietary Supplement Health Education Act (DSHEA) at the end of the Congressional Session that year overcoming the highly effective opposition led by Representative Henry Waxman, when he was Chairman of the Health & Environment Subcommittee of the Senate Commerce Committee. The movement was united on the supplement issue and we forced the leasership to bring pressure for passage. Note: Waxman and the House Leadership lost control in the next election. The supplement issue has enough support and power to obtain a victory over the medical establishment and the pharmaceutical industry when it is activated. I am often asked why I bother to inundate you with requests to contact legislators on health politics issues. This is why. Unfortunately, you have to fight for these health freedom issues. It may seem unfair and an imposition on the hectic lives of worried sick cancer patients to have to engage in such extraneous lobbying of legislators and newspaper editorialists. Sadly we have the long list of failures since that victory 10 years ago. Vale is going to jail for over 5 years for selling Laetrile-a cancer treatment. Drs. Serafina Corsello,MD and Carley,MD are no longer licensed to practice medicine in New York and Dr. s,MD although now licensed again is no longer practicing because she cannot get medical malpractice insurance and noone will hire her as a doctor. Navarro, the young brain cancer patient who was denied by FDA the right to use Dr.Stanislaw Brzynski's antineoplaston treatment from 1999 until May 2001, until it was too late to save him. He was the proxy for so many others who are denied or kept in the dark about the existence of alternatives. Fluoride is still in most water in the United States, mandatory vaccinations are a central feature of the Homeland Security biodefense program, and aspartame (nutrasweet/equal) is a protected sugar substitute in ever more diet products despite more consumer complaints to FDA than any other product. . It feels good to know we can win, but so much needs to be done. Thanks again for your patience and efforts to secure these rights. The effort to regulate dietary supplements as if they had comparable Safety dangers as FDA approved prescription drugs is inappropriate and huge waste of regulatory resources. Consumers throughout the country find it disturbing that dietary supplements with an excellent safety record are being subject to an ongoing campaign of elevated scrutiny that is discouraging consumers and restricting access while inevitably raising prices in the long term. While you have paused in your efforts to curb these supplements, all of these restrictions are based on very little hard scientific evidence and experience. I hope you will reconsider your sponsorship of The Supplement Safety Act S.722. The actual data on the incidence of adverse reactions to dietary supplements shows the problem to be extremely small. This bill tries to deal with a problem that is in reality so small as to be a statistically random error. The American Association of Poison Control Centers’ (AAPCC) annual reports document the incidence of reported adverse events associated with Dietary Supplements as well as other exposures causing injuries and death. The latest annual report for the year 2002 listed the following associated with deaths: From ALL vitamins 2, from electrolytes & minerals 5, amino acids 0, herbs and botanicals 3 (of which 2 were from formulas containing ephedra in combination with other herbs and 1 having ephedra as a single ingredient) and 1 unknown supplement or homeopathic. This was a total of only 11 for all supplements. Major adverse events were all vitamins 64, electrolytes and minerals 69 and all herbs, botanicals and other dietary supplements 195 for a total of 328 this was reported in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine Vol.21, no.5, pp 406-407 & 409-410-September 2003-see enclosures The figures for prior years are similarly low. The 2002 report even showed a decrease in deaths of 42% from a total of 19 deaths and 294 major adverse reactions reported in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine Vol.20, no.5, pp.439-440 and 442-443, September 2002. See enclosures. The report is available on the website of the AAPCC www.aapcc.org While no death is unimportant, these figures demonstrate that the problem of safety is much greater for FDA approved prescription drugs which the Journal of the American Medical Association, vol. 279,no.5:1200-1205,April 15,1998 estimated to result in 106,000 deaths and 2.2 million adverse reactions resulting in hospitalization. These were not the result of overdoses or errors, but from prescriptions correctly prescribed and dispensed and taken as directed. Since this study only included in-hospital cases it is an underestimate of the extent of the real problem with FDA approved prescription drugs. If the Congress and the FDA are concerned with safety, prescription drugs offer a major opportunity for improvements. Placing restrictions on the safer dietary supplements, sometimes used as alternatives to prescription drugs can only exacerbate the extent of the real problem. The strength of the connection to even those very few instances of adverse reactions is not very well established. The FDA press release of February 28,2003 “HHS Acts to Reduce Potential Risks of Dietary Supplements containing Ephedra †stated that RAND called such cases “sentinel events,†because they may indicate a problem exists, but do not prove that ephedra caused the adverse event. Their report recognized that such case studies are a weak form of scientific evidence. Even these low numbers could be attributed to random errors in reporting from the millions of supplement users. Ironically, one of the compelling reasons why consumers and patients prefer to use supplements is the relative safety and lack of serious side effects and complications attributed to prescription drugs. Presently supplements are much cheaper than prescription drugs, if this bill is enacted many supplements may be removed from the market. The bill provides most explicitly that “… if 1(one) or more serious adverse events indicate that a dietary supplement …appears to present a significant or unreasonable risk of illness…†it can be removed.Sec, 416 (d) (1). This is a very draconian power to give to an agency that has shown suspicion and hostility to the use of dietary supplements. Your assumption that FDA will undertake an unbiased clinical evaluation before taking action is not born out by this agency’s prior conduct. Even if the supplements stay on the market or are returned to the market, the price will be considerably greater as happened with L-Tryptophane. This inexpensive sleep aid and anti-depressant was removed in 1989 when a contaminated batch of a new genetically engineered formula was imported and caused several deaths... This cause was established and reported in major medical journals. Nevertheless the product was removed and brought back as a much more expensive prescription drug. Under current law the FDA has authority to remove genuinely dangerous supplements. I urge you to oppose this proposed legislation and support the DSHEA Full Implementation and Enforcement Act S.1538 sponsored by Senator Tom Harkin which addresses the safety issue. 9 enclosures Sincerely, _____________ Arnold Gore
