Rochester and Monroe County, New York, are fluoridated. This is a good

article to show legislatures, or other fluoride-inducing governing bodies who

believe fluoridation saves them money, that it's clear the poor need money for

dentists not more fluoride. After millions or less are spent fluoridating, some

organization will continue to be on their doorstep asking for even more money to

fight tooth decay because, as we know, fluoridation doesn't solve any

problems.

Dental care is luxury for many local families

Few dentists take Medicaid; treatment suffers

Mecca Redar couldn't hide the pain in her eyes and the tears on her cheeks as

she considered her life at 49 â€” no job, no insurance, no way to pay a doctor

or dentist.

She's seen neither in nearly five years. And she refuses to visit a dentist

unless it's an emergency.

" Life is something and then you die, " says Redar of 25 Trust St. " But you

have to have faith. "

Like Redar, thousands of low-income, underinsured and uninsured people in the

Rochester area lack basic oral health care and often go years without dental

treatment.

When they do seek care, they face major roadblocks: a critical shortage of

dentists who accept Medicaid patients; long waiting lists at outreach centers

that accept uninsured and underinsured patients; and overwhelmed dental centers.

The local crisis mirrors problems across the state. At least one-third of

cities in New York and two-thirds of its rural areas have too few dentists.

More than 115,000 people in Monroe County are eligible for Medicaid, which is

government health insurance for the poor. An estimated 73,674 people in the

county have no insurance; they may be homeless or just have not filled out the

paperwork for Medicaid. Others, often referred to as the underinsured, may

have some medical insurance but no dental plan.

And some who work in low-paying jobs â€” service workers, such as housekeepers

and home health aides, and part-time and temporary workers â€” suffer daily

tooth pain but can't miss work to see a dentist, so they go untreated, say

dentists and advocates for the poor.

For such per-diem workers, missing a day of work can mean missing a day of

pay. Bills must be paid, they say. Teeth can wait.

Dentists report cases of prolonged, severe tooth pain and swelling among

Rochester's poor â€” cases that, left untreated, could result in worse health

problems, such as infections and loss of teeth.

" Unless they have a toothache, they're not going to the dentist, " says Dr.

Buddhi Shrestha, vice president of oral health at Rochester Primary Care

Network, which helps connect people in need with health care services.

" The dentist is way down at the bottom of the list â€” until tooth (pain)

starts. It is a public health issue, without question. "

The public health issue doesn't stop there.

Some of our region's most vulnerable â€” poor children and the developmentally

disabled â€” are waiting for operating room care because there aren't enough

dentists trained to treat them.

" There's acute need just to treat the people who are suffering from the

outcome of poor oral health, which includes pain, " says Dr. Cyril Meyerowitz,

director of Eastman Dental Center, 625 Elmwood Ave.

The center, an arm of the University of Rochester Medical Center and Strong

Health, provides more care to the poor than any other dental center in the

region.

About 90 percent of nearly 140,000 visits to Eastman Dental Center sites in

2003-04 were from low-income patients, including more than 88,000 visits to

Eastman Dental Center's Elmwood office.

At clinics where dentists volunteer to treat those who cannot pay â€” Mercy

Outreach Center, 142 Webster Ave., for example, and St. ph's Neighborhood

Center, 417 South Ave. â€” there are waiting lists of six months to a year.

When tooth pain becomes excruciating, most of the poor head to emergency

rooms at Eastman Dental Center and Strong Memorial and Rochester General

hospitals. There, they may face long waits â€” either because of overcrowding or

a

shortage of dentists to treat them.

" One of the issues we have at Rochester General is we have very little space

and a very large patient load here, " said Dr. Speisman, chief of the

department of dentistry at RGH and Pluta Family Center for Oral Health. RGH and

Pluta tallied 21,943 visits from July 2003 to July 2004, a jump of 8 percent

over the previous year.

Advocates for the poor, meanwhile, are growing increasingly frustrated.

" Eastman must be rolling over in his grave, " says Penny Gardner,

director of Mercy Outreach. " Did he imagine that there would not be enough

dental

care (for the poor) in Rochester? "

Why not Medicaid?

About 565 dentists are licensed by the state to practice in Monroe County,

but only about 72 dentists â€” excluding those at Eastman Dental Center â€”

practice in the city and in parts of Irondequoit. Twenty-three take Medicaid,

said

Bonnie DeVinney, executive director of Finger Lakes Health Systems Agency, and

most aren't enrolling new patients. Most dentists in the region don't take

Medicaid either, causing some patients to drive long distances for treatment.

Don Slover, 49, traveled about 50 miles from his home in Naples, Ontario

County â€” in pain â€” to Eastman Dental Center's emergency room to have his

tooth

pulled. He couldn't find a closer office that would take Medicaid.

Dentists list many reasons why they are reluctant to accept Medicaid patients.

It requires them to choose the least costly options to treat patients, which

may mean, for example, pulling a tooth they want to save.

Medicaid patients cancel or skip appointments frequently, dentists say,

because they can't afford to miss work or lack transportation. " Missing

appointments is a (sign) that people are so overwhelmed with family life, " said

Dr. Lynne

Halik, a pediatric dentist and president of the Seventh District Dental

Society, which has about 850 members in eight counties, including Monroe.

" It's hard, especially when you're a single parent. Sometimes we have to

triple-book " appointments because they tend to cancel so frequently.

And filing Medicaid paperwork, they say, is tedious and bothersome.

" I got out of it because the paperwork was so frustrating,'' said Dr. Louis

J. Cianca, who has a practice at 3101 W. Ridge Road in Greece.

" Let's say you make some slight clerical error. After several weeks they'd

send (the paperwork) back to do over again.

" One cleaning, it'd be three or four months before it was all straightened

out â€” then they'd pay me. It wasn't worth it. "

Like many dentists, Cianca still treats underserved patients, but on his own

terms: For the past 20 years, he has opened his office at least one day each

month, pro bono, to treat low-income workers from the Eastern Service Workers

Association, an advocacy and support group for low-income workers.

'Tremendous need'

Mark Horn says he sees evidence of the shortage every day.

" If you put 50 of our members in a room, at least 80 percent would have

missing teeth. ... We know that there's a tremendous need " for dental care for

the

poor, says Horn, who is executive director of ESWA, 244 Bay St.

" It's hard to see this level of need, of people who are unable to get their

basic needs met, even though they are working. "

ESWA has about 21,000 members, from domestic workers to people who have

suffered layoffs. The group offers emergency help, such as food and clothing, as

well as dental care and legal help to workers and their families.

Horn and others canvass city neighborhoods weekly, going door-to-door â€” rain

or shine â€” searching for people in need.

Every week, they find new members.

" These are people who fall through the cracks, " Horn says. " We call them the

working poor. There's no medical insurance, no dental, no nothing. You're

getting paid what you need to survive. "

Four dentists, including Cianca, work with ESWA, treating patients who come

to the dentists' practice for free. These patients don't skip appointments: The

group has volunteer drivers who drop them off.

ESWA sent letters to area dentists asking for help but got little response,

Horn said.

" We don't have enough dentists willing to give up their time, " says

Calcagno, a business manager for Hy-Tech Dental Lab at 173 Empire Blvd. The

lab donates services to ESWA members.

" What do (dentists) need? They don't need anything, " she said. " We have a

bazillion dentists. They could give one hour. We need dentists. That's it.''

Shrestha says he understands that dentists' offices are busy and full of

paying patients. But he hopes they will do more to help the poor.

Many, however, already volunteer in the community, said Halik.

She said dentists treat patients on Mercy Flights, for example, and in one of

three " Smilemobiles, " mobile units that travel to schools in Monroe County

and surrounding areas.

Statistics on dentists' volunteer efforts aren't available. The dental

society started an initiative this year to track dentists' volunteer work and

community service. A report is expected to be filed this fall.

Most dentists, Halik said, treat patients who cannot pay, but they do not

report it.

Training needed

Meyerowitz, Shrestha and others want the community to know there is a growing

need in Rochester to treat the underserved, including children and

developmentally disabled people. Eastman Dental Center " can't do it all, " said

Meyerowitz.

More than 200 children up to age 18 are awaiting treatment that requires an

operating room, and more than 50 others require some type of sedation as part

of their treatment.

Eastman Dental Center is the primary care provider in Rochester for

developmentally disabled people, treating about 200 of them each year. There's a

one-year waiting list for operating room care.

The center, which merged with University of Rochester Medical Center in 1997,

has a staff of 40 full-time and 100 part-time workers.

Because UR is a teaching facility, Meyerowitz says, Eastman Dental also gets

help from about 85 residents.

But not every dentist is trained to treat children or developmentally

disabled patients. They may need special training, for example, on how to

administer

anesthesia.

The B. Golisano Foundation has provided a $25,000 grant that would

recruit and train 25 dentists over five years to help treat the developmentally

disabled. Each would handle at least 10 operating room cases each year.

Education is key

The key to preventing problems with teeth is educating the public about oral

health, says Shrestha, who specializes in children's dentistry.

And there are several programs focusing on prevention, such as the

Rap/Jingle-Rhyme for Oral Health Educational Program. The program brings

dentists into

K-3 elementary classes in city schools to teach kids how to care for their

teeth. It was created by Dr. Darlene Riggins White, a dentist from the Eastman

Dental Center.

About 23 percent of kindergartners in the City School District have never

visited a dentist, more than twice the national goal of 10 percent.

White's brainchild has reached 4,000 children in four years.

White and Shrestha say parents need to take an interest in improving the

dental health of their children.

" How many want to find a provider or feel it's important? " Shrestha asks.

" Somewhere the issue of education comes in. Parents will bring their child (to

an

appointment), then they won't come back, then (the children) come into the

system as an emergency. "

In 2003, Shrestha using a $450,000 state grant, established New York's first

Technical Assistance Center for oral health in Rochester. TAC is a state

project, housed at Rochester Primary Care Network, 259 Monroe Ave.

Shrestha, who heads several state and local oral health programs, says TAC's

mission is to improve access to care for the poor and reduce oral disease. It

advocates for dental programs for Medicaid patients statewide and helps form

partnerships with dentists to help serve them.

Another local solution is in the works, said Doniger, Monroe County

health director.

He says the state has begun a new Web-based system to electronically process

Medicaid claims, which is expected to reduce filing frustrations among dental

providers.

Doniger says the system is being installed on computer systems of Medicaid

providers and already may be running at some sites.

" There's been a tremendous amount of effort in this community to improve oral

health care, " says Doniger.

" But we haven't solved the problem yet. "

Hi Angel,

We have been overly conditioned to think that human beings and modern science

have discovered and formulated a simple pill that will cure or at least

alleviate all of our diseases. Its built into our culture and underlies mosy of

even the natural treatments we even favor on this list. UNFOTUNATELY IT IS

WRONG!

In the big picture, there are more things we don't know about the needs and

functioning of the complex human organism that is subject to epilepsy and all

those other ailments. God and/or nature in his or her infinite wisdom provided

all those yet UNDISCOVERED and UNISOLATED nutrients in the real whole foods

that grow on trees and come up out of the ground.PLEASE take advantage of all

these nutrients that are not yet in dietary supplements such as " powdered calm "

but are still out there in foods if we will only eat them and not rely on

only supplements to supply the short cuts to good health. I still will defend

our

important right to take these supplements but don't think it is a substitute

for real food in addition-the meaning of a supplement.

These next few weeks are extremely critical if fluoridation is to end in

County!!

This action Alert:

Write an email to Doug at KSL radio (see instructions below). Ask

that he run a program with both sides discussing the fluoridation issue just as

he did prior to the November 2000 election. (At that time it was Rae ,

who did an outstanding job, and Dr. Wayne Cottam - the dentist who said on the

air, " diet has nothing to do with tooth decay " . Sheez!!)

This time, we will have professionals here who many of his listeners,

including Doug himself, have heard of and quoted. Dr. Limeback will be

in

town and available for Doug 's KSL radio program on Thursday, October 21st

.... ask that a program be scheduled that day.

If dentists, doctors, health department members, and Utahns for Better Dental

Health all claim that fluoridation is what's best for us, then it's time they

defended their comments!! I'm sick and tired of the proponents talking down

to the public and yet when it comes to facing another professional who opposes

fluoridation, every single proponent runs and hides. Enough is

Why don't you all just drink a glass of milk before bedtime or eat a portion

of turkey for dinner, they both contain tryptophan which is a precurser to

melatonin.

Also, melatonin only helps you fall to sleep, it does not aid in maintaining

sleep.

A while ago I wrote about the action to take to hopefully gain easier access

to medical and scientific research studies, many of which have been financed

in part by Public, taxpayer funds. The New York State Coalition Opposed to

Fluoridation (NYSCOF) which continues to do very detailed followup on the

constant

stream of articles published in these journals has written me a letter below,

outlining some approaches they have used, that some of you may want to try in

your research. While NYSCOF started in NY, as you see from their posts that I

often forward they are an important resource for antifluoridationist health

activists throughout the United States and even many countries throughout the

world.

Dear Arnold:

Yes, it is absolutely important, and at times extremely so, to get hold of a

copy of the entire published study. Carol Kopf has many times gone personally

to a medical or law library and obtained copies. I have gotten copies

through my library, by giving them the name of the article, author, if possible

page

#, and of course name of journal, date, volume # if known, and as much

information as possible. It may take several days, or a week or more in some

cases,

but my library has been most cooperative. They track down who has the copy

and get it from that source and then mail it to me, unless I prefer to pick it

up.

Sometimes, at the bottom of the published study, it it tells you the name and

address of the particular author or researcher whom an additional copy may be

obtained.

It is getting the RAW data of the researchers that can be far more difficult

to obtain. If government funds are involved, then the Freedom of Information

Law would probably be the best way to go, but they can be uncooperative. Our

organization has used the FOIL a number of times, and we have obtained quite a

bit of information, but other times, they know how to hem and haw and try to

evade the issue. We have had to be quite persistent at times. Dr.

Yiamouyiannis some years back was able to obtain vital data through the FOIL.

You probably know all of the above, but thought I would mention it.

The Mozart Effect

The possible health benefits of the music of Mozart have been

assessed in the April 2001 edition of the Journal of the Royal

Society of Medicine.

There has been controversy about the benefits ever since researchers

claimed that listening to the K448 piano sonata improved spatial

reasoning skills. Later research suggested that K448 can reduce the

number of seizures in people with epilepsy.

Professor assesses international evidence on the effect

of music on the brain, and calls for more work to be done to discover

the key ingredient in the " Mozart Effect " .

The original " Mozart effect " study in 1993 assessed volunteers'

spatial reasoning after listening to sonata K448, relaxation tapes or

silence. Results suggested that just 10 minutes of Mozart's music

improved their performance of tasks such as paper-cutting and

folding. Later studies found that rats negotiated a maze faster after

hearing K448 than rats who were played white noise, silence, or

minimalist music. Elsewhere, children taught a keyboard instrument

for six months, learning simple melodies (including Mozart), did

better on spatial-temporal tests than children who spent the time

working with computers.

Controversy arose when other researchers could not reproduce the

positive results.

Scans have shown that the human brain uses a wide distribution of

areas to listen to music. Rhythm and pitch tend to be processed in

the left side, timbre and melody on the right. Those parts of the

brain which we use for spatial/temporal tasks actually overlap with

the music processing parts. Professor suggests

that " listening to music would prime the activation of those areas of

the brain which are concerned with spatial reasoning " .

More recent work with epilepsy patients has indicated what Professor

calls " a more impressive indication of a Mozart effect " . Once

again, sonata K448 was played to participants, most of whom showed a

decrease in their epileptiform activity - the patterns in the brain

that produce epileptic seizures.

Computer analysis of pieces by various composers showed that the

music of Mozart and Bach shared a common factor, a high degree

of `long-term periodicity', in other words, wave forms repeated

regularly, but not very close together, throughout the piece of

music. By contrast, music which had no effect on either spatial

reasoning or on epileptic seizures did not have this factor.

Professor commented:

" It is suggested that music with a high degree of long-term

periodicity... would resonate within the brain to decrease seizure

activity and to enhance spatial-temporal performance " .

Professor concludes that any health benefits of listening to

music are " not specific to Mozart's compositions " , and calls for more

research to be done on music other than K448, with longer listening

times. For the benefits to be of real use, we need to discover

exactly what musical criteria have to be present for the " Mozart

effect " to take place.

Apart from another Mozart Concerto, K488, only one other piece of

music has been found to have a similar effect, a song by the Greek-

American singer Yanni. Entitled 'Acroyali/Standing In Motion', it is

featured on his album " Live At The Acropolis " . This composition was

chosen by researchers because it was similar to Mozart's K448 in

tempo, structure, melodic and harmonic consonance and predictability.

Some of you have had problems sending the form letter to all Codex delegates

that I alerted you to yesterday. (If you just signed on to the IAHF list- see

Here are some answers based on responses I've just made to a handful of

people:

SIMPLE STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR SENDING THE FORM LETTER TO ALL CODEX

DELEGATES:

1. Go to http://iahf.com/index3.html

2. Scroll to bottom and click on " ALERT: Form Letter to Send to Codex

Delegates "

3. In the Alert, you will see a LINK that says " Email Addresses of Codex

Delegates That Should Be Sent the Below Form Letter " Click to open that link,

there you'll see the email addresses to copy and paste into an email to send to

all delegates.

4. Open a New Email in your email program

5. Copy and paste the first few email addresses from the link above to your

" To " line and the remainder to your " Bcc " line (unless your email program

doesn't have one in which case put them all into your " to " line.

6. Copy and past the form letter into your email

7. Copy and paste the TITLE of the form letter into the SUBJECT LINE

7. Click SEND

SOLUTIONS TO SOME PROBLEMS THAT HAVE ARISEN

Some people's servers won't allow an email to be sent to more than a certain

number of email addresses at one time. While my ISP allowed me to send to the

whole list in one shot, yours might not. If your ISP blocks you, try sending

two emails in order to send to only half the list each time.

While I checked the list for invalid addresses before sending them to you,

some servers are detecting invalid DNS entries and are blocking the mail from

going out. If this happens, just delete any email address that appears invalid

to your server and send again without it.

KEEP IN MIND that the FDA and CODEX refuse to furnish us with the up to date

email list of delegates to send to, so we're forced to use the list from last

year's meeting. We just have to do the best we can. Most of these addresses

are still good this year.

Sorry the programmer was not able to overcome the technical difficulties for

writing a program that would have allowed us to send this form letter with

just one mouse click. He worked very hard to solve the problem, but was unable

to.

I timed myself on how long it took me to send the email the low tech way, and

it took me less than 30 seconds.

Please take the time to send it, and please also join me in sending the legal

demand letter to FDA that I sent out yesterday. Send it to them by certified

mail. The more people who do this the better. We are putting key FDA officials

on notice that unless they do what we tell them to do at this Codex meeting,

we can sue them as private citizens under Title 42 for civil rights violations

if their actions result in our losing access to supplements at any future

time. There is no stronger message we can send to them than this, and we have no

choice.

The reason we have no choice is we're dealing with unelected bureaucrats who

are predisposed otherwise to strictly follow orders originating from the

Pharma Cartel.

Never forget that US Codex Delegate Dr. Schneeman is not an elected official.

Never forget where she came from: (to FDA from UC where in 2003 she was

working under a nearly $40,000. research grant from ILSI who's membership

reads like a " Who's Who " of the multinational drug companies.

The gloves are OFF. This is CRUNCH TIME people. If you require your access to

couldnt handle Viox!

I have spent over 30 yrs half dead on my feet because of phenobarb

and a few years with acid reflux because of dilantin. I have changed

my diet--I eat all whole, organic foods, no sugar, excercise

regularly and I feel better than I have in many years. I dont want

to go on meds, but I need my drivers license back!

If I dont take the Keppra, I dont get my license back. Any

suggestions or info on Keppra including personal experience would be

greatly appreciated!

more " unpredictable " . Try to look for an alternatively oriented doctor who is

Well, yes I agree, in a perfect world finding the

perfect meds would be ideal. But, this being the

" real " imperfect world- it's not as easy said as done.

Josiah has been on four meds and had more seizures on

those meds than with nothing (how's that for some

grass fertilizer?) at this point I am told that we (as

do all pt's who have failed at 2 or more meds) have a

10% chance of EVER getting a medication to work for

us. So here we sit. trying alternative stuff,

considering a diet option and trying to figure out

whether psychosis will be better or worse than liver

failure if we have to try drugs again. FYI I found

two articles today at pub-med. Both concluded that

roughly 50% of people with epilepsy will have it end

on it's own with no intervention. Best of luck to

each and every one of us and our kids. There is no

pain like watching your child suffer and feeling

powerless. aloha

Mike's suggestions are very sound. Give her lots of PLAIN yoghurt for the

beneficial bacteria and Magnesium. The organic acid test can be quite helpful

in sorting out this problem.

Minimize carbs in her diet, even if it means getting the stuff out of the

house. That's what we had to do.

She sounds as though she may have a yeast overgrowth. That can often

go undetected and cause sugar cravings - it feeds the yeasts. How

about tantrums? You may want to consider a course of probiotics. I

would look into either Garden of Life's " Primal Defense " or Nature's

Way " Primadophilus/Bifidus " (refrigerated only). Yeast overgrowth can

also cause malabsorbtion of vitamins. That could be the reason she is

craving the chocolate. Could be a Zinc and Magnesium deficiency

brought on by the yeast and the chocolate could be elevating the

copper which is making the Zinc problem worse.

My daughter, a, is 7 with a vns. She has had it in for about 6 months,

and has not gotten any results yet. The only thing it does for her is stop her

seizure when i swipe the magnet, and that only happens maybe 20% of the time.

There is a website/message board you can get alot of info from.

Just type in vns message board on your search bar, and u will find it.
