As a matter of interest, is Metphorman a comparatively new diabetic

medication in the States? I have been taking that for about 12 years here

in England. When my wife and I started our regular visits to the States,

after we got married, A friend of my wife at that time, worked in the

medical field, and had a book which listed all drugs, but it didn't show

either of the tablets I was taking at that time, and Metphorman was one of

them.

If it is the same formula as we have in England, not only does it help your

diabetes, but it is also supposed to curve down the amount of food intake

you eat at meal times.

Yes, metphorman is fairly new here. The food and Drug Administration in the

U.S. is slow for okaying many drugs that are used in europe. the fact that

it decreases appetite is a real boon for diabetics!

The rate on the glycemic index is for each item at each meal.

Ken,

I would almost bet that when you start counting them carbs and limit

yourself to about 30 carbs per meal you will start doing remarkably

better...

Cy, the Ancient Okie.... to

Re: Just don't have any ideas re what to eat

and what not to eat!

that's what I wanted to know also. So this high *refined

sugars* count showing up throughout the day is a result of eating

either rrefined sugar processed, or at least refined white floured food

right? interesting. I'm getting the feel of what is right and what is

not. I guess I'll have to lookup some salads to make. I find that I

eat too many sandwiches using brown bread as I'm realizing that even a

lot of brown bread would be determently correct? I have good solid

lunches and suppers, consysting of 75 carbs but as I said, using brown

bread or wholewheats on a steady leverl is not good using them on a long

term basis. Ken b

when they mean 30 carbs per day does it mean for the meal like breakfast or

for the whole day?

well like 30 for lunch 30 for dinner and 15 per snack?

30 carbs per day is really hard to follow. Probably more realistic is 30

carbs per meal.

Don't stop what you are doing ken. if you are running those excellent sugar

levels, that will prolong your life for a very long time and you will not have

diabetic complications. Just remember, 2 hours past eating a meal your sugar

should be 6.6 or less. If you master that... your good to go!

Call yoru doctor adn ask what your last hemoglobin a1c leel was. It shoudl be as

close to 5.0 as possible. By keeping yoru 2 hour post meal test 6.6 or less,

consistantly/about 90% of the time, your a1c will be between 5.0 to 5.5 which si

excellent!

You can't just check in the morning and be 5.5 and say wow I am good to go! your

sugar can go from 5.5, to 9.9, to 4.9, and so on clear through the day. That is

why the 2 hour post meal test is more essential, in my opinion, than any other

sugar test. If your 2 hour post meal test is 6.6 or less, yor next premeal sugar

is guaranteed to be around 5.0.

I have been type 1 diabetic for 27 years now.

Keep up the good work and don't listen to your doc telling you to eat what you

want!

the most important reading is 2 hours past eating a meal. it has to be 6.6 or

less. the 2 hour post meal test is what determines how well your sugar control

will ultimately be.

I check my sugar 8 times a day and more if I feel the need. Put it this way, my

pancreas used to read my sugar level and squirt in insulin when I needed it. It

doesn't work now so how am I going to tell what my sugar is? Guess? Based on how

I feel? Nope, I have to check... once a day is not enough... you have to check 2

hours past eating a meal and keep it 6.6 or less. if it isn't 6.6 or less, then

you know you ate to many carbs for that meal.

why 6.6 or less 2 hours past eating? Because that guarantees you an a1c between

5.0 to 5.5 and a normal person a1c level is 5.0! It is a numbers game is all...

it is best to limit your quick acting carbs in general ken. dont' eat to many

quick acting carbs... they are what spike your sugar in general. Instead of

eating 30 grams of a chocolate bar, toss you up a salad with cheese/meat on it,

some italian dressing, and there you have a great healthy snack with about 8

grams of slow acting carbs that won't spike your sugar. make sense?

eat some pickels, cucumbers, celerey, olives, cheese, meats, etc. all are alow

acting carbs and won't spike your sugar and will let you snack on something...

ken since you are type 2 diabetic, you do not have any quick acting insulin to

take to keep your sugar down. so, you must limit quick acting carbs more than a

type 1 diabetic since all you have is the oral medicationa dn exercise to

counter the high sugars. a type 1 diabetic takes insulin shots to keep the blood

sugar down and the two hour post meal test 6.6 or less. I could eat 30 grams of

a chocolate bar, dose 4 units of humalog quick acting insulin, and 2 hours later

be 6.6. You would be 9.9 or higher and linger high all day.

Doctors in the US do put type 2 diabetics on insulin if they want to but most

patients don't like shots so they use oral medications. Some type 2 diabetics

like the flexibility to dose quick acting insulin to cover the occasional

treat/quick acting carb.

yes ken, you are getting it! good job! limit your quick acting carbs to 30 a

meal and that would make it 90 total a day assumeing you eat

breakfast/lunch/dinner. For lunch, you could eat 1 slice of brown bread, about

15 grams of carbs, load it up with cheese/meat, and eat an open ended sandwhich

and then have a nice big salad and your good to go! Do a two hour post meal test

and bet your 6.6 or less!

Now eat a whole sandwich, handful of potato chips, and an apple and do a 2 hour

post meal test and bet your 10.0 or higher!

30 a meal. 30 for breakfast, 30 for lunch, 30 for dinner.

if you are hungry and want to snack in between meals, eat low carb snacks like

green veggies or meats.

I don't understand what you mean by test result of 6.6 or 9.9, all I know is

120, 140 etc. Can you explain that to me.

Thank you ; I guess that's why the doctor said that I was doing well, and

that he was thinking of taking me off the med. Metforman. Is it good to measure

my sugars after every meal or do like the doctor suggests and that is to test

once a day after a and before a meal once a day, in other words, each day test

it only once starting before breakfast, then the next day before lunch and so on

and then do the cycle two hours after a meal once a day. Hope this is clear to

you? Thanks for your encouregment Ken b.
