Hi there Ken,

Well, 30 carbs are 30 carbs. That much is true - but - now comes the

crunchers.

The brown breat is not made with white flour and will give you a slower

sugar release. The yummy cake will give you a real quick shot because it

also has white sugar and white flour.

Pay attention to " total carbs " and not " net carbs " .

I don't know about Canada but, in the U.S. there are no standards for

what constitutes " Net Carbs " .

Now that I have really muddied the water Pat, or Harry can hop in

and unsnarl my mess.

Cy, the Ancient Okie... r

Just don't have any ideas re what to eat and

what not to eat!

I am a relatively new type 2 diabetic. I am getting used to what to eat

with one acception and that is how do I differencia between 30 carbs of

say 2 pieces of brown bread, and that of say, 30 carbs of chocolate? I

mean I don't understand how the chocolate can differ to that of bread

....after all, they're both only 30 carbs each right? I suspect that

the chocolate is sugar loaded and the bread is not loaded with this

direct sugar gotten from the choclate! I thought that if I watched only

my carbs in general, I'd be alright but now as I said, suspect that the

direct sugar is much more dangerous than the bread example. Cy, or

anone else please comment on my delema...would appreciate it a lot. Ken

B in toronto.

A fellow member of this list serve has compiled a carb guide, and I will be

glad to send you a copy of it via an email attachment if you wish. There

are different kinds of carbohydrates. There are naturally occurring ones

and refined ones. The refined carbohydrates get into the blood system much

faster than those that are " natural " . Thus refined carbohydrates cause the

glucose levels in the blood stream to spike, rise rapidly and high, whereas

carbohydrates that are natural cause a slower absorption into the blood

stream causing less of a rapid rise in the glucose level and a more gradual

spike.

The diabetic only needs to know that insulin only works on carbohydrates no

matter whether they are natural or refined. The body converts all

carbohydrates into glucose, the simplest type of carbohydrate.

The diabetic should avoid all refined carbohydrates or use them as sparingly

as possible. Refined carbohydrates include:

sugar, flour and any products made with it, corn meal, fruit juices, and any

thing white like potatoes and milk. Refined carbohydrates are poison for

the diabetic.

The diabetic should eat only whole dgrains, meats, cheeses, nuts and

vegetables for the most part. These items make excellent salads, and it

would be wise for a diabetic to have two or more salads per day.

Insulin does not work on protein or fat.

Hi cy and Harry; Cy, thanks for your opinion and Harry I would love to have a

carb chart or whatever. Sounds like I have to avoid these fine floured and

sugared products. Good night Cy and Harry and will be looking for your chart

Harry. Cheers; Ken b

There is a thing called the blycemic index or the GI for each type of food.

It simply means that foods breakdown into glucose at different rates. The

higher the index number the more rapidly it will be broken down into glucose

in the blood stream. The standard is made with one slice of white bread at

a 100. The white potato has a GI of 115 and the sweet potato has a GI of

70. It just means that some foods are better for you than others when it

comes to considering their glycemic index.

It is kind of like golf. The higher your score, the worse you are; the

lower the score, the better off you are. The standard is 100 for the GI.

Or is that for each meal?

That is for each food item. You probably eat several food items per meal,

so you figure the GI for each item you eat.

the online USDA searchable food database is the best around. The limited list

harry has was derived from it and compiled by Dean Masters on list here. Check

the real deal out at:

http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

also check out www.calorieking.com for carb counts on name brand foods. Both

sites are accessibel using a screen reader.

The GI is not a total carbohydrate count. It is a measure of the rate, I

emphasize rate, at which carbohydrates of each food are broken down to

glucose in the blood stream. It is important not to confuse the total

carbohydrate count with the blycemic index. They are quite different and

measure different things.

For a diabetic the total number of carbohydrates is what you really need to

know, not the net carbs, since your body converts the total number of

carbohydrates into glucose. If you eat a food item that contains say 40

grams of carbs, like a potato, then the total number of carbs in that potato

are converted into glucose.

If you purrchase a food bar which claims to have only 8 grams of net carbs

in it, and you inspect the label in closer detail and learn it contains a

total of 18 grams of total carbs, then your body converts the total of 18

grams of carbs into glucose, and not just the 8 grams of net carbs.

that is for the food/white bread it is its gi. Really though, the glucimic index

is ok to know about but it is not crucial for diabetic control. Main thing is

keep your 2 hour post meal sugar 120 or less by limiting carbs at each meal and

your a1c will be between 5.0 to 5.5.

It really is that simple... if your sugar, 2 hours past eating, is not 120 or

less, 6.6 Canadian, then cut yoru carbs back at that meal. if you consistantly

keep your 2 hour post meal test 120 or less you will have no future diabetic

complications.

Most diabetics can eat only around 30 grams of carbs at each meal to get a 2

hour post meal test of 120 or less.
