; Do you take a meal by meal reading for you diabetesand are you a type 1

or 2? I get an average of about 5.1 and 6.3 so, my M D says I can go off the

diet and eat normally but I don't trust his acessment up to this point although

he's given me some good advise in general. Ken b

Ken,

30 carbs is 30 carbs, as others have stated, but some carbs act mor quickly

than others -hence it is good to know the glycemic index of differant foods.

Most eveverything that is white has a high glycemic index and will make your

sugar rise more quickly than that with a low glycemic index. this can

make a big difference in diabetics who do not take a fast acting insulin.

Are you on meds for your diabetes?

Just don't have any ideas re what to eat and

what not to eat!

I am a relatively new type 2 diabetic. I am getting used to what to eat

with one acception and that is how do I differencia between 30 carbs of say

2 pieces of brown bread, and that of say, 30 carbs of chocolate? I mean I

don't understand how the chocolate can differ to that of bread ...after all,

they're both only 30 carbs each right? I suspect that the chocolate is

sugar loaded and the bread is not loaded with this direct sugar gotten from

the choclate! I thought that if I watched only my carbs in general, I'd be

alright but now as I said, suspect that the direct sugar is much more

dangerous than the bread example. Cy, or anone else please comment on my

delema...would appreciate it a lot. Ken B in toronto.

Excuse me Ken for butting in when you are asking a question, but your

readings are good and you should not listen to the doc who tells you it is

okay to get off the diet. the reason your readings are so good is because

you are sticking to it! Both and I are type 1 diabaetics-me for 60

years! (Yes, I am almost as ancient as Cy.)

Yes, I am on what I think is Metformen, the spelling of this med is most

likely wrong but you get the idea anyway and am getting some encouragement by my

m d to perhaps go off the med.s, soon as My sugar count is between about 5.1 to

about 6.3. I have another question; An old friend of mine is a diabetic too,

and he says that he takes a blood reading every morning before breakfast but

that doesn't seem right as my diaatician tells me to each day, take a reading

starting off with a reading before breakfast and the next day take one before

lunch and the next day before supper then to switch it, to day by day taking a

reading about 2 or 3 hours after each mail each day aaccordingly. mmmmm, It's

got me thinking! lol; Ken b

Well, , I'm wondering if say, I had a a really sweet thing such as an

half a chocolate bar, thinking that even though it's refined sugar essentcially,

and being that its sugar stays in my blood longer, the count of my bloods, would

be higher than what I'm used to when not taking this refined sugar any time of

the day would end up giving me a higher count no matter what time of the day I

took this supposed half chocolate bar? Do you know what I mean? I'm trying to

explain something that's a little difficult to describe but I think I have it

right? Ken b

Yes, Ken. It would raise your blood sugar no matter what time of day-and if

you do not cover it with insulin, your blood sugar would stay up for

probably at least 24 hours.

It is a good idea to take your sugar several times a day-2 hours after

eating is best. That way you will know how what you ate affects you . It

is importatnt that your BG stay in that low range 2 hours after eating. A

nuber of very long term studies on diabaetics has proven that the lwer you

keep your BG level, the less likely you are to have complications.

Metphorman.is one of the newer drugs out and it has been proven to do a

better job than some of the other ones previously used. P.s. glad to have

you on the list!

that's what I wanted to know also. So this high *refined sugars*

count showing up throughout the day is a result of eating either rrefined sugar

processed, or at least refined white floured food right? interesting. I'm

getting the feel of what is right and what is not. I guess I'll have to lookup

some salads to make. I find that I eat too many sandwiches using brown bread as

I'm realizing that even a lot of brown bread would be determently correct? I

have good solid lunches and suppers, consysting of 75 carbs but as I said, using

brown bread or wholewheats on a steady leverl is not good using them on a long

term basis. Ken b

No, its not Ken. Is that 75 grams of carbs per meal? If so, that is a lot!

Many on this list eat that many carbs in one day. Especially if yu are a

type 2, it is important to keep your carbs per meal to about 30. If you are

a guy who does a lot of exercise, more would be okay. but if you are like

many type 2 people who need to lose weight, then a maximum of 30 per meal is

preferable. Harry can tell you abut that.

determently correct? I have good solid lunches and suppers, consysting of

75 carbs but as I said, using brown bread or wholewheats on a steady leverl

is not good using them on a long term basis.

Re: Just don't have any ideas re what to eat

and what not to eat!

that's what I wanted to know also. So this high *refined sugars*

count showing up throughout the day is a result of eating either rrefined

sugar processed, or at least refined white floured food right? interesting.

I'm getting the feel of what is right and what is not. I guess I'll have to

lookup some salads to make. I find that I eat too many sandwiches using

brown bread as I'm realizing that even a lot of brown bread would be

determently correct? I have good solid lunches and suppers, consysting of

75 carbs but as I said, using brown bread or wholewheats on a steady leverl

is not good using them on a long term basis. Ken b

,

As a matter of interest, is Metphorman a comparatively new diabetic

medication in the States? I have been taking that for about 12 years here

in England. When my wife and I started our regular visits to the States,

after we got married, A friend of my wife at that time, worked in the

medical field, and had a book which listed all drugs, but it didn't show

either of the tablets I was taking at that time, and Metphorman was one of

them.

If it is the same formula as we have in England, not only does it help your

diabetes, but it is also supposed to curve down the amount of food intake

you eat at meal times.
