Did your Dr. prescribe it?

I heard about mealatonin and questioned my ped. She said the research shows

it absolutely does aid sleep and to go ahead and give it to Caleb. She then

said " Why didn't i think of that for my son? " He has ADHD also and said she

was going to stop and pick some up.

I am going to a workshop onthe 29th where the guest speaker is Chief of

developmental and behavioral peds and director of the ADHD center, Schneider's

childrens hospital associate professor of Peds, Albert Einstein College of

medicine. I will ask him the question about sleeping and what we can do to

help? Any other questions you want me to ask??

How would each brand be different?

Just like all vitamin brands are different. There are different additives in

different brands. Compare the labels.

Tommy has been having some behavior problems at school. Its not everyday just

a few days out of the week. He also gets up early some mornings and 2 or 3

times a night sometimes. Do you think this melatonin might help him. He's like

that rabbit that keeps going and going. Always tells me he's not tired but as

soon as his head hits the pillow he is out. How much should I give him? He's

10.

When I take Tommy to the movies he is covering his ears the whole time and

none of us can enjoy the movie. He said that its too loud. Do you think that I

should insist that we stay in and finish the movie or just not take him to the

movies.

mom to Tommy

But when we are at home he turns his TV really loud.

Thanks for everyone's help with my questions. I have so many of them. I live

in a small town and don't know very many parents with children that have DS.

and most of them are younger children so they look to me for answers to

questions. Even Tommy's teachers look to me for answers. Sometimes I know them

and

sometimes I don't. Now I have all of you wonderful parents to help me and maybe

I can give some answers to the younger moms.

Tommy has worn orthedics in his shoes since he was 3 yrs old. I've been

taking him to a foot doctor here. We don't qualify for Medicaid or SSI and my

husband's insurance doesn't cover that. They are 350.00. Time I get them paid

off

its time to go again, which is O.K. if thats what I need to do. Anyway my

question is, They sell orthodics at Walmart but I don't no if they will work as

well as what he is getting now. Does anyone know.

The sound system that movies use is much different. It is a surround system, so

instead of sound coming at him from one directions, like the TV, the sound is

coming at him from the front, sides and rear, and with the speaker type, the

sound is truly a different quality. Try buying some earplugs at your local

drugstore made to reduce decibel levels. I got 's at CVS, and they have

been wonderful. She asks for them before we go in, she can still hear the

movie, or whatever event we are attending, but just at a different level.

We have the kids size headphones from Sensorycomfort.com.

doesn't wear them so much any more, but they saved us from many

screaming, horrible times when the music or sound system was too loud.

Plus, she was able to participate in school activities like the Sock

Hop, where there was a very loud DJ and screaming kids. She still

didn't stay the whole time, but she did stay for awhile, so it was a

victory. Her ear muffs (as she calls them) have allowed our family to

do many things together that we weren't able to do before.

What state are you in? There may be a Medicaid Waiver program where Tommy could

get Medicaid based on his income and not yours. Each state that has the waiver

program runs it differently. Here in Virginia, the waiting list is years long

(due to 's behaviors, we are finally going to get it!).

Another option to pursue is to see if your mental retardation/developmental

disabilities agency has family support funds to help assist with the orthodics.

I only have to deal with arch supports for - the store (with qualified

fitters) didn't charge us for the supports.
