[Dr-Aceves-bandster s] help

I had the band removed due to complications on 4/9/08. Fought tooth and nail to keep it, but had it removed emergency surgery in the states. I cant stop eating. I feel so helpless and out of control. I was seriously underweight and was slowing whittling away to nothing. Weighed 220 DOB 12/28/06. Weighed 106 4/9/08. Goal weight was 135. I am now in less than a month to 140. I feel like such a failure and feel like I am spinning out of control. I want to get the sleeve but financially we are pretty much ruined for awhile. The insurance did not pay for the week hospital stay or the surgery because it was band related. I read the posts all the time but have really never participated. My bad! Just looking for anyone who has any advice or helpful comments. Sue

Yikes, yes!! you're clearly too tight, and we should never ever be

barfing this often. every barf risks a slip, and sets us up for

later slips.

Please read the 3 fill documents in the files here to learn more

about fills - when a fill is needed, when one is too much and

dangerous, and when another fill might ne needed. It is OUR

responsibility to know and keep safe!

now, before you get in, please go back onto liquids only, and then

continue for several days after the unfill too, to allow rest and

healing. Any bended/thinned hearty soup, any prtoein drink, thin

pudding, etc is fine for now. warm and hot things are better than

cold, as they will open and relax the stoma.

I'd also urge you to ge a fluoro to be sure you have not had some

damage from the too-tight fill - a pouch dilation, small slip from

all the barfing, etc.

good luck - please get in very soon.

I'm distressed whn docs don't give clear guidelines about fills.

having and keeping a too-tight fill is th #1 reason for all the big

problems.

Hi everyone

I had lap band surgery about 3 years ago and doing generally well with it. On June 16th I had to have total knee replacement surgery. I came through it well and was on an IV while in the hospital. I had no problems whatsoever when I came off the IV and catherter. I am now in a Physical Therapy rehab center and something is drastically wrong with my band. Since I have been here, my band has tightened so much that I can't get sips of anything down. The only thing I am doing different from the hospital to PT is the supplements they are giving me. I am on two doses of iron a day and it hurts my stomach. I'm not sure if iron can cause this reaction in the band or not, but I am starting to get scared. My last fill was back in March 2008, and it's been very comfortable since then, up until now. I've been vomitting what little I sip and I also need to take some pain pills which is proving

to be a challenge now too. NOTHING wants to stay down, or go through the band.

Do you have any suggestions for me? I don't think an unfill is the answer becasue it was fine previous to surgery. I'm just interested to know if anything like this has happened to anyone else and how it was solved. Thanks for your anticipated help.

Debbie,

I would try going back to the hospital and getting some IV

fluids and nothing by mouth for 8 hrs so that the swelling will go down and you

will not be dehydrated. Getting the IV fluids will hydrate you and it should

bring down the swelling. No pain meds by mouth during this time either. When

you do sip something, make sure it is warm.

The main thing is to give the band a rest. Crush all pills or at

least split them. Hope you feel better soon. If you cannot give the band a rest

or get IV fluids I would get a temporary unfill.

Like the other "old-timer", , I would suggest getting a slight unfill if only temporarily. You need to be sure you are getting enough fluids in to stay relatively healthy. Getting a slight unfill won't cause you any problems but will make you feel a hell of alot better. I have been in the place where you are and it is purely miserable. I got a slight unfill at first and then went back a week later and had everything taken out for a while. I gained about 5 pounds but it was worth it simply because I was feeling so badly when I couldn't get enough down. Don't risk other problems just because you are afraid you will gain a little weight. Those pounds will immediately come back off once you are healthier and ready for another fill in a few months. Keep us posted.

Dear oboczky1519

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You were diagnosed with Reiter's within 5 weeks of the first attack.

Hi, I am Fr. Dave and I have had Ankylosing Spondylitis, Reiter's and other

members of the Spondyloarthropathy family for over 30 years.

Life certainly does go on and for some there is remission after drug therapy. I

am not one of those lucky ones. But even then I had to pick up what was left of

my life before the Spondy's and forge a new path for my life. It is not easily

done, you have to find something that you can do within any limitations you

have. After my final diagnosis of AS, etc., in 1984 I went into a tail spin for

almost two years but then I grabbed the bull by the horns, or I should say, the

snake by the tail and became a professional mascot animator. Changed my whole

life. Of course during the 12 years I spent as a mascot I furthered my

education and then slipped into the somewhat easier life as a priest. I say

somewhat easier, as it is not as easy as it looks.

Blessing my friend, and please a plea to everyone, please sign your name or

nickname when sending posts.

Fr. Dave

HI

sorry to hear your situation. I was dx'd with reactive arthritis from salmonella

in feb. Mine was pretty severe with disabling pain and swelling of joints. I

didn't have other symtoms except a little conjunctivitis. Since Feb, I have been

much improved on high doses of sulfasalzine and indocin.

I immediately went to physical therapy-pool therapy to keep the joints mobile. I

also felt quite crippled-couldn't weight bear at all on my feet and couldn't

grasp an orange juice carton because of pain , stiffness and swelling in my

right hand. Try not to despair as there hopefully is a better outcome for you

also. It was a long haul. I also was lucky to have been diagnosed within weeks

of the onset.

Many of us find that certain foods will exacerbate the symptoms but in the acute

phase you are in, you may not notice what causes flares and what doesn't. I hope

the best for you too and will say a prayer that you are able to take care of

your child also. I also tried accupuncture and homeopathic arthritis creams that

may have helped also. I sense that my affected joints are not what they used to

be. I do alot of yoga that helps alot. It helps to meditate also to help the

depression and anxiety that come with a disease like this. For me, I find that I

cannot eat egg yolks, sugar, possibly wheat\gluten and I am trying to follow a

vegetarian diet. I also tried soaking my foot in ice cold water to help stop the

inflammation. There are alot of remedies out there and each one is different for

each person. I also drank alot of pineapple and soy milk drinks as there is an

enzyme in pineapple (bromelein) that helps the inflammation. Take lots of care.

There is light at the end of the tun

nel.

Ive had ReA for a little over a year now, My symptoms never totally

went away. I always have a certain amount of pain, sometimes ranging

from a 2-3 pain level to a 7-8. Nothing as bad as my first flare

though, but it always reminds me it's still there. Ive never been

totally recovered though. I recently had bariatric surgery to

decrease my weight to help though. I am finally off prednisone after

taking that for about 10 months.

Many peope with Reactive arthritis (Reiters syndrome) do go into

remission. I'm one of them. I developed reactive arthritis when I was

24 and it went into remission about a year later. Other then an

occasional case of iritis and a few aches and pains I've been normal

ever since. I'm 49 now and have been holding down the same profession

for all these years. I'm one of the lucky ones so all is far from lost

for you.

You simply won't know if you're one that will go into remission until

it happens. Daves advice is good advice. Maybe you should hope & pray

for the best while preparing for the worst until you know for sure.

Either way, your life is not over! You and your child may have to

ajust a bit but it will go on and be what it will be.

Rick:

Are there any blood tests to determine when Reiter's is active or in remission

(i.e. SED rates) or is it simply a matter of how you feel?

I believe it is sed rate and CRP. At least they show levels of

inflammation. My rheumy does them regularly. It's been over a year and

the are still above normal.

I had Reiter's Syndrome early last year. Yes, I said had. I don't show

symptoms anymore, except joint pain when getting up and down off the floor,

and when holding certain positions for long periods of time. I'm a 31 year

old female. Mine was triggered by the salmonella tainted peanut butter. My

stomach was feeling " funny. " I didn't have vomiting, just a slight nauseaus

and always full feeling, and painful belching. Anyway, that was followed by

Conjunctivitis, then severe joint pain in my legs progressed until I

couldn't walk without it being excrutiatingly painful and taking forever to

walk just a few feet. I was very lucky that the Dr. in the emergency room

knew what it was. I was put on Prednisone. It was a miracle. I could

walk. I eventually weaned myself off of it, and was on Meloxicam, and then

off of that. That was last April/May that I didn't need meds anymore. My

symptoms started in February.

I know how lucky I am to be virtually symptom free now. Many of the people

on this list are not. But I wanted to share a positive story with you and

let you know that there are people that can lead normal lives again.

There's a blog I wrote about my experience here:

Hi ,

I think 1 year of feeling good would be a good sign of remission - other than

that I don't even know if there is a " test " to tell if you actually have

Reiter's.

Good luck

The phones in MX go down all the time. I tried calling Nina and the message says that she is not taking calls right now. Nina ALWAYS takes calls, the only time that message plays is when the phones are down.

I already emailed Nina at home, I will email Gaby, I will try calling Yolanda. On Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 9:11 AM, debijean54 <debijean54@...> wrote:
