Aspirin desensitization doesn't always work, true. But it works for many (and many who have been treated successfully don't bother with posting as they are going on about their lives without much problem). Avoiding salicylates may help, but its a difficult process, esp if you like to eat. Lots of healthy foods, fruits, berries, many veggies, tea etc are full of salicylates as are some toothpastes, most spices etc. Around here salicylates even come off the bark of aspen and cottonwood trees. Many of us have had dramatic changes with aspirin desensitization and it is the standard treatment today for Samter's. You probably do need to find a different ENT or allergist who is more informed about desensitization -- it sounds like you've suffered way too much already. I have thought until this point that my Polyps will not grow back. This week, finding that they are returning more quickly each time, I have decided I need to do some research. This is my first step. I have never been a member of one of these groups before and thought it would be useful for me.

I take your comments on board.

Hi ,

thank you for this info...I was on this diet for 8 months and found I could do it. Now I can't eat wheat though and have just made the connection that oats do the same thing as wheat so I should be saying bye to oats too, which would limit this diet even more. Thank God that chocolate is on the low sal diet - that is one salvation lol!

Good luck with finding out more about Samters. I have been desens for 3 years now and it REALLY does make a huge difference. I can eat ALL the foods that has listed without any issues, althoug I still need the other meds.

My ENT and Immunologist both don’t do aspirin desensitisation and I’ve yet to find a doctor anywhere that does in this country. I’ve visited over a dozen throughout the past ten/fifteen years.

My current medication is Seritide morning and night, Nasonex twice a day which has helped keep the polyps away so far after four years, and ventolin and nebulizer when needed.

My ENT has put me on a totally salicylate free diet for three weeks yet again to try and sort things out, so far a week down there’s absolutely no difference, but my sleeping has improved. Headaches are a problem because no doubt that’s the caffeine missing out of my daily 4 to 5 cups now that I’ve switched to decaffe.

Here’s a copy of what he gave me that I typed out again as it was on many pages, hope this is of help –it’s not an easy diet but I’m willing to try it for a few weeks. You can have anything from the low section and some from the moderate.

I think someone up there must like us, chocolate is a

godsend, I think I would have died without it.  Just proves that this piece of ‘sinful

delicacy’ is good for you after all.

I just wish I could go through this aspirin desens. Maybe one day

I’ll find a doctor who will do it but I’m not so sure if there’s one available

in this country, maybe I should try the US of A?  Daughter is heading over

again in a few months, might make the trip with her this time.

Becky my daughter heads off to St Louis in October and if I can

find an ENT somewhere along the route which means landing at Los Angeles and

changing planes etc. I’ll definitely give it a go.  I’m just so fed up with

this after so many years and no doctor nor specialist here seems to want to try

it.

It'll be an adventure! The good thing about desens in the USA is that it is a quick process - I would recommend here in the UK, but it is slower - about 3 -4 weeks and that is no good if you are coming from abroad.

Becky my daughter heads off to St Louis in October and if I can find an ENT somewhere along the route which means landing at Los Angeles and changing planes etc. I’ll definitely give it a go. I’m just so fed up with this after so many years and no doctor nor specialist here seems to want to try it.

Hi ,

thank you for this info...I was on this diet for 8 months and found I could do it.

You can have anything from the low section and some from the moderate.

,4 FESS in 4 years is way too much ; by now, a good area of your nasal fossa and sinus must have undergone fibrosis (ie scarring) from this level of surgery and is therefore less or not at all functional. But when surgery is unvoidable...it's hardly avoidable ; that's the trouble. As Ken said, reading old posts is a must, there is a lot that has been shared here about : - irrigation (btw, since your mucosa is likely scarred, help it drain after irrigation by "gravity" - bend over forwards face parallel to ground for 10+ minutes so your sinuses can empty in case your natural draining is out of service) ; - "triggers" (food, environmental, occupational, allergies, etc),- germs (they're almost everywhere, but start by avoiding touching your nose with your fingers unless you've just washed your hands, and thoroughly disinfect your irrigation device, and not just with plain water),- medication (have you tried Zyflo if you do not respond to Singulair?),- aspirin desense (a lifesaver for many members),- diet (make it healthier but avoid products that are too rich in salicylates),- surgery, and I probably am forgetting a few issues.I do not see a topical steroid in your treatment, unless your betnesol is a nasal spray. Spraying the topical steroid in irrigation might help. Also read the archives, links, resources, etc.Good luck!>> Hi> > After suffering with nasal congestion and discomfort for 18mths and my GP telling me I had hayfever, I was finally referred to an ENT consultant.> > He diagnosed Nasal Polyps and Samters Triad. , I live in St. Louis and have a great doctor. He desensitized me over

three days, and while it hasn't been a cure-all, it has definitely improved my

symptoms. He was a friend of Dr.Samter and is tickled that we call it Samter's

Slavin and he is at St. Louis University. I can get you his number if

you're interested.

Christy thankyou very much.  My daughter comes over for

Halloween to stay with friends that live there and loved St Louis – so I think

this year I may just tag along (finances permitting) as I’d love to see the

city and in particular the spectacular gardens there.

Imagine meeting someone that is a friend of Dr Samter himself,

that’d be really interesting.  Thankyou so much Christy for the information and

I’d really appreciate getting his number if you don’t mind.

Hi ,

That one made me laugh, it reminds me of some fruitless past experiments !

I believe the low-sal diet will really help those of us who are the most

sal-sensitive, but probably not the majority of the group - but this just an

opinion.

I think the general public (doctors included) is appalled to know what we put

ourselves though to find relief. I've experimented with all of the following in

my irrigation fluid: cayenne, vinegar, hydrogen pyroxide, baby shampoo....the

latter is the most pleasant. The fact that we irrigate as much as we do is

shocking to most people! Fruitless experiments indeed :-)

Because my septum won't heal I went to see a new-age doctor recently who told me I was very unhappy (I did feel unhappy in his presence and much happier when I left his office), that I needed lots of sessions of work with him, that I needed to fast (I'm 5'9" and weigh about 115 lbs), and to stop irrigating and stop using steroid spray. (I'd just been told to keep using the steroid spray as I have another sore in the same nostril which is too wet. Lovely.) When I told him I was worried about polyps growing back and having to get more surgery, he told me fear was a bad place to operate from. Of course he's not the one who will lose his sense of smell, have to have another CAT scan, more surgery, go through desense again etc. Anyhow, adventures in desperation -- I think from now on I'll stick with the ENT. Joan,If you apply undiluted sterile manuka honey on your septum for 2 months and let it melt there for part of the day, I am confident it will help heal. Otherwise, another idea would be to have an ENT apply a thick post-FESS healing gel, like dextran-chitosan gel, or a hyaluronic acid surgical gel. However, the success of all this depends on whether the sore is infected or not - if there are bugs, they need to be killed first.Your description of a new-age doctor's diagnosis is both very funny and frightening when one thinks about the number of unsuspecting patients who buy these people's words and embark on a course where they end up worsening their situation.I saw a new-age ENT once (she didn't advertise the fact, doctors are forbidden to advertise in France), and apart from the music and incense burning, all she did was prescribe honest homeopathic and plant remedies.> > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi> > > > > > > > > > > > > > After suffering with nasal congestion and discomfort for 18mths and my GP telling me I had hayfever, I was finally referred to an ENT consultant.> > > > > > > > > > > > > > He diagnosed Nasal Polyps and Samters Triad. One doctor even said I shouldn't nebulize with this or that because "the nebulizer wasn't designed for it". Well, it sure wasn't, but as long as it seems to work and doesn't clog the nebulizing tip, anything safe can be transformed into a mist. He may have meant the droplet size isn't optimal for sinus diffusion, which is true, but that is part of the experiment. There are a few things that do help when added to the irrigation solution :- antibiotics,- steroids,- sodium cromoglycate,- NAC,- baby shampoo,- manuka honey.Of course, irrigation will not reach sinuses that have not been surgically opened, and there are cases where only a combination of systemic and topical drugs will achieve a cure. For instance, when the underlying bones are infected (osteomyelitis), no topical drug will do anything. One requirement is that the aditive does not contaminate the area, ie that it be sterile.> > > > > > > > > > > Hi> > > > > > > > > > > > After suffering with nasal congestion and discomfort for 18mths and my GP telling me I had hayfever, I was finally referred to an ENT consultant.> > > > > > > > > > > > He diagnosed Nasal Polyps and Samters Triad. Thanks asfy. I did in fact get some of the sterile manuka honey and it works better than anything else I've tried. I realize my problem is that I wanted it to work in two days instead of two months. Thanks so much for suggesting it -- I'm going to keep on with it -- I do already have far fewer nosebleeds. On May 24, 2010, at 3:18 AM, asfy wrote:

2 months was a large estimate - if you are cured in 1, you'll know it's time to

stop.

So go back and ask if being 'on the limit' is anything like being a 'tiny bit

pregnant' or 'a little bit diabetic'!!! Tell him that he may not be concerned

but you are!!

Hi Vivien, welcome to our forum and I hope you get the support

and help you need.

First, never accept that because a doctor tells you your blood

tests are normal, or that " you are at the limit " - so he is not

concerned. What you have to do is to ask this doctor for the results of your

blood test. This means getting the actual figure for each test done together

with the reference range and then post these results here so we can hopefully

give you a better explanation of what they might mean. We need to know whether

the results were at the bottom, the middle or the top of the reference range.

A doctor cannot withhold any such results from you, so telephone

the surgery, tell them what you need and that you will call in and pick them

up.

Hi Vivien, welcome to the forum. Unfortunately your story is a common one- blood tests are taken as gospel and patients symptoms ignored. What test was done and what were the results and range used- you are entitled to your results so just ask for them- if you post here we will comment. you probably had a TSH test done which isn't that reliable- most healthy folk have a result of 1.0 . the range used in the Uk is the widest in the world so it is not surprising that patients needs are often ignored. > thyroid treatment > From: foffion@...> Date: Tue, 25 May 2010 15:22:00 +0000> Subject: Help> > Hello everybody.
