Having spoken to yesterday (on this very issue), I feel and have felt for about two years that I was wasting my money. Having also felt 'let down' on a professional issue, a regional rep from the RCN (a personal friend) gave me the support/advice I expected and should have received from the HVA. I have decided not to withdraw and (dare I admit to this) join the RCN!! I am trying to become more pro-active within the organisation and support my colleagues who are like-minded and also in being a voice within my own trust for health visiting. I would echo 's comments but isn't it very sad that we are even having this debate?

Good luck on starting your treatment. I know when I

started I thought it seemed like it would go on

forever, but it's over with now, at least for the time

being. I guess you must be in the Phoenix area? Our

Brewers don't look to be much competition in the

baseball race.... -dz-

Malinda,

My son is 3.5 yrs old, 33 lbs. Just completed 12th round, 100mg DMSA, 8 hour

protocol, 3 days on 11 off. Doing great so far. Taking a break from chelation

until we receive some test results to rule out any yeast (all others tests came

back good), and hopefully we will be able to go onto phase II with ALA soon. My

son is a patient of Dr. Amy Holmes. Best Wishes.

Elsie (in TX)

I was wondering if there are any parents chealating 3yr old around 30

pds, if so what schedule are you following? My son is 3 and weighs 32

pds. we are doing 3/11 DMSA only 25mg every 8 hrs. He has finished 6

rounds, with a little noticible progress (not much). I was reading

in Andys file that you can do every 3 hrs, I am wondering if this

would be better. Thanks for any comments, Malinda

Yes, I totally agree. My initial reaction was to withdraw my membership, but on reflection decided it was better to remain and be a voice from within.

You are right , it is very sad especially for those of us who, 10

years ago, contributed to bringing the organisation back from the brink

of bankruptcy and dissolution because we believed that without the HVA

there would be no health visiting: only to find that now the reverse

seems to be true. Sad too, for all of us for supported the name change,

because we thought it would be about supporting multi-disciplinary

working and equal value for all the different members: not about

abolishing health visiting as a profession in its own right. Sad for

everyone who voted to be part of the family of nursing for the same

reason, not because they wanted to lose their professional identity. If

we had wanted that, we could have all gone and joined the RCN:

actually, I am a member of that organisation too, because there are some

things they are better at, like research, but their official policy is

to get rid of the health visiting register altogether, so they are not a

good option. Unison is the only organisation that formally recognises

health visiting as a profession, but it is not inclined to be active in

the field.

But it is a question that needs to be asked, thank you Xena. I am

inclined to agree with those who think we need to be really active in

the CPHVA. This is partly because MSF/CPHVA (so presumably the new

union, Amicus) has the staff side seats, so it is the nationally

recognised union for health visitors, which means it will continue to

speak for health visiting and be listened to. The fact that it no

longer recognises health visiting as a profession does raise, for me,

major questions about whether it can , therefore, realistically be the

professional association for health visiting (quite apart from the fact

that the structures through which the organisation opearates are solely

workplace related, and are like a 1960s close-shop trade union not a

professioanl organisation). However, as long as they are able to

present an appearance of representing their membership (and it is an

appearance which at least some of the Executive really believe), they

will be listened to in high places: especially by those who want to

disempower health visiting.

It is true that, if a majority of memebers left, that would raise

questions, but that is not likely to happen, nor would it be reflected

in their membership numbers even if it did. I am aware of referring to

'them' because I am not at all sure that I want to feel part of such an

unresponsive and controlling organisation. We are informed, courtesy of

the Executive minutes, that they discussed the possibility of expelling

the 'troublemakers' from the union (the wrong kind of active in the

union, apparently: not conforming), so no doubt they would be delighted

if some of us left! I haven't received a renewal notice yet; perhaps

that is why.

Best wishes

Hi ,

I am appalled to hear that the CPHVA are even considering expelling

the " trouble makers " . In any democratic organisation it should be expected

that not all members " will tow the party line " . Surely it should be

considered healthy to have a range of opinions!

What is happening in relation to our away weekend after the alternative

meeting? It seems that we need to keep up the momentum, and offer people an

opportunity to exchange views and consider a strategy for the way forward. I

am happy to help organise dates, venue etc.Who kept the list of interested

people? It seems we may well add to this.

Hi Pat! (Where have you been hiding?)

No, the interferons used to treat HCV are all interferon-alphas.

The Peg-Intron is pegylated interferon alpha-2b (I think I got that

right.) I can't answer your questions on the insurance. If I were

you I would call whoever is in charge of your husband's insurance

where he works and ask for an explanation on the preexisting

conditions. I THINK that when you have CONTINUOUS insurance coverage

a company can only delay on coverage of preexisting conditions, not

deny them. But I'd sure check this out fully.

Good luck

Claudine

CPHVA memebrs will have received their journal this last week and seen the

additional papaer headed,

" House of Lords passess order establishing the new nursing and midwifery

council "

How sad I felt at their need to include the statement - " the final outcome

was in doubt up to the last minute, after peers had been vigourously lobbied

by a group of dissatisfied health visitors " . It is good in one way that

the level of inpact was recognised but I do think it is time they accepted

not all members agree with their decisions and wishes and stop seeing us as

a " group of dissatisfied people " . this makes it more important that we get

involved and influence the agenda.

On a more positive note, I was heartened to read on the same day, in the

December edition of the Journal of Community Nursing - a Last Word article -

which it apperars are always annoymous the following comment,

" Many grassroot health visitors are unhappy about the exclusion of " health

visiting " from the title of the new Council and have advised their union the

CPHVA accordingly. The CPHVA has taken the view that health visiting is

part of the " family of nursing " and therefore does not see the need for

health visitng to be included in the title. However it has a duty to

represent the views of its membership! As a consequence the CPHVA should be

putting the case for health visiting to be included in the title. "

It goes on,

" The manner in whcih this matter has been dealt with has angered many health

visitors up and down the country. Health visitors are a forthright,

articulate and assertive group of individualsand it is not wise to incur

their wrath. They are also quite a political bunch. They tend to be well

organised and well able to lobby to get theri voice heard. This is jsut

what they have had to do in the abscence of support form their union.

.................. Health visitors have not taken the situation lying down

and are unlikely to go quietly. Watch this space. "

I do not have a scanner but have asked someone who does to scan the whole

article in for me - but is this a message?

Like you, MArgaret, I am saddened but take hope in the latter

part of your email. Whoever wrote it knows how determined and

dogmatic we are, and I think that we should and will take it on.

I was just wondering how many of you actually got to watch the show?

I have Real Player and I didn't get to see any of it. I tried to get

on about an hour prior to the event and couldn't get on then either.

Now it is 10 minutes after the ending and I still can't get on.
