a F,

Hi! There is at least 3 people in your general area, I'm sure they will

let you know who they are!! There is also a big clinic in Philidelphia....

MDD = Major Depressive Disorder

PSTD = Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Clay is a wonderful medium to work in! It can withstand aggression, but is

soft and yielding, can be punched and pull apart, and put back together

again!! I can imagine just how good it is to help you.

We all have mixed feelings about telling. I think the majority are using a

'need to know' approach. Many of us are fairly open, but if its not

necessary, dont bring it up. Of my 3 kids, one is very open and her friends

are her best support and do ERP with her all the time. My youngest doesnt

want her peers to know. My oldest is very selective - if the person is also

accessing the mental health system, then he tells them. At school, he goes

out of his way not to tell anyone.

I suggest that he connect with the teen list. Its a wonderful resource

http://www.angelfire.com/il/TeenOCD/ he can scroll down until he sees

" Subscribe to Teen OCD "

Another resource is to ask his doctors or therapists if they know of

anyone or any support groups for kids.

take care, wendy in canada

Hi a,

Welcome to the list. Prozac made my daughter hyperactive for the first

few months, however it was helping her OCD-related anxiety and

depression so much that we hung in there - and this side effect

gradually went away. Her CBT therapy, along with the medication, helps

keep the OCD under control.

Take care,

a,

I have a 12yo son also with OCD, He is on luvox, which does not seem to

help. We just took him to a new therapsit yesterday, which was

overwhelming. He sees a phys. for med. and he will not change it because

Jona is not at his max he says but I here so much about paxil, from the

list. Is this a more successful drug for kids?

Hi a:

MDD = major depressive disorder, a mood disorder

PTSD = post traumatic stress disorder, an anxiety disorder

IMO it is important to teach our OCDers not to be ashamed of their

disorder. However reality is that they might be teased about it by friends

and others may respond to them differently. If your son talks about it in

a matter-of-fact way with his friends and is doing well, it is unlikely

that they will think about it more than the common cold. Steve has learned

the hard way about people knowing since he has been kidded about his brain

hiccup, which is how I explained it to his classmates. It has been very

helpful for him to meet other OCD kids. Does your son like to be on the

computer - he might like to try the Teenlist. You might want to check the

OCF web site for information about support groups in your area. You son

certainly has a fascinating list of interests which should distract him

from his OCD at times. Take care, aloha, Kathy (H)

Hi, Pat, we went from luvox to paxil rather quickly because my son could not

swallow the pills. I don't know if the luvox would have eventually helped

him. I know luvox markets this med as a primary use for ocd. Maybe wait

until he gets to the maximum dose and see how he does. The paxil will be

there if he needs it.

Hope this helps, I know how hard it is to watch him suffer with ocd. a

Hi a,

No, Ava has a 504 plan instead of an IEP because she doesn't have any specific

learning

disabilities, no significant split between verbal and performance IQ and no

other

indication of learning problems, although I suspect some problems in what Mel

Levine

calls " large chunk of language " processing. Levine is a researcher who has a

program and

website called " All Kinds of Minds " all about learning problems.

Ava has a 504 so when she is struggling with OCD accomadations can be made such

as being

allowed to call me, extra time as needed on assignments, seating arrangements

changed and

stuff like that.

a:

I have an 11 yo son with OCD and assorted other alphabet soup. He is on an

IEP, austensibly for an LD in written expression, although he more than

qualifies for an IEP under OHI (other health impaired). The OHI

classification fits with a variety of diagnoses including OCD and ADD

because it impacts on a major life function -- in this case learning. I

prefer my son to be covered by IDEA rather than section 504 because the law

is stronger. However, either a 504 or IEP will help with accommodations.

Regarding testing for ADD. There is often comorbidity with OCD.

Frequently the first diagnosis the child receives is ADD, then later OCD.

That, in fact, is what happened with my son. He does take Ritalin at

school to help him focus on his work -- he fidgets a lot -- but we rarely

use it at home. I can tolerate a lot more motion -- at least when I'm not

stressed. :-)

If you have additional questions, please post them.

I just read Jim's post. That is where we are going with our son so you can

call that number at the Anxiety and Agoraphobia Treatment Center in Bala

Jeanie, welcome to the group!! Yeah another animal lover!!!!! Can you

explain where you rescue labs from? Is it like the greyhound rescue

program???? I don't have any dogs right now, I gave three cats (I fall into

the classification of a cat person) but as soon as I get a yard I'm headed

straight for the pound, that is if God doesn't send me an angel first (most

of my pets have been strays that land pretty much in my lap or on my

doorstep). I want to become active in the Humane society as soon as I move.

I get so disgusted with people who are careless with their animals ( I could

go on).Well anyways, yeah I'm glad you are here!!!

Tell us what your results were like with the Firm tapes!!!!

Jeanie,

Welcome to the group! Congratulations on getting serious about tae-

bo! I think you'll love it and the results you start to see once you

are doing it consistently. It's like no other workout I've ever

done! What kind of work do you do with the dogs? There are lots of

animal lovers here, as well (I've got 3 dogs and 2 cats and a 16

month old little girl). I look forward to hearing more about you and

your progress with tae-bo :)

Welcome Jeanie,

It's great to have you with the group, you'll find some pretty amazing people here,

they are so helpful, kind and supportive, I'm sure you'll enjoy our company.

Thank you for the animal rescue you do. Thanks to people like you, my dog

(lab-collie cross) was rescued (I couldn't no longer have him, and the friend

who adopted him became allergic to animals after having a baby) and he

had a great life. I don't know the peple who took him in so can't thank them

directly, so can I thank you instead.

>Welcome, Jeanie! I bet you will fall in love with taebo. It is so much fun.

It barely feels like exercise. I've been doing it for a year and still look

forward to doing it every day and miss it on my day off. I admire you for doing

the lab rescue. I don't know how you do it knowing that you will eventually

have to give most of the dogs up for adoption. I see people do it and I just

marvel at them since I could never let go of an animal once I took care of him.

I have a german shepherd who is my baby and his best friends are all black labs.

They are the nicest, most playful, easy going dogs. I would love for our next

dog to be a black lab as a playmate for our shepherd but my husband can't

tolerate their piercing black lab bark (e.g., when they want you to throw them a

ball).
