I'm on the Ribivarin/Interferon combo therapy, and while it seems to

be helping, it also makes me nauseated and very tired on the days of

my shots (Mon., Wed., Fri.) My appetite is really weirded out--I'll

think I'm hungry, and when I go to eat, can only handle a few bites.

I was diagnosed in Dec. '97, but I think I contracted it during the

'60's, when I was a hippie, doing a lot of drugs. It seems ironic

Dear Kathi,

Finally someone willing to admit they got it in the 60's from illegal drug

use. My husband Vinny came down with it..or was diagnosed about two years

ago. He was devastated to say the least. After a 20 year career in the

Army and being straight for about 23 years it really hit him hard having to

use a needle again. He stayed on the interferon for a year and his liver

tests have been okay...we think. His doctor doesn't do much more than

order the blood tests. He goes back next month for another blood test and

I am praying it's all right again...but I don't know. He doesn't look well

to me and it scares me to death.

I have tested negative twice so I don't worry much about getting it. We

were told to have safe sex but after being married almost 25 years I just

laughed at that. I'll take my chances with the guy I love. He's had a

rotten time of it with side effects and I wasn't about to add any more

concerns to his load.

Well thanks for letting me get this off my chest. I wish you health.

that I can speak to other people, including my kids, and be able to

My husband recently lost his job, which meant that the insurance went

south, too. I have enough combo meds for two more uses--can't afford

to pay the $4,500 a month that it costs to fill the 'script w/o

insurance. That's not counting the specialist fee...!

Charlie feels the same way--he feels that if we've had unprotected sex

for two years now, a condom won't help now. He knew I had it when we

got married last New Year's Eve. He also knew that I am a looney

toon, complete with papers, but seems to feel that it just keeps life

interesting!!

My name is Jacki and I maanage this list.

Welcome and please feel free to go into the member center and read the

archive files about our children. My son was severely injured by his

DTP vaccine. Our middle child has asthma and bad allergies also and I know

how scary it can be. I dont know where you are located but we see a Cranial

Osteopath in NYC and she does wonders with all kinds of children related to

both allergies and vaccine issues. We also see an alternative doctor who we

really respect. He was formerly a pathologist for several years and now

parctices alternative medicine/homeopathy/nutritional counselling, etc.

You are definitely on the right track and I hope you continue these

therapies when you find a doctor you like. Please write back and tell us

where you are and maybe someone on the list is in your area and can help you

locate someone.

No child should have a reaction like your son's.The rash may have been

worsened if he happens to be allergic to eggs on top of the fact that the

shot obviously assaulted his immune system violently. I hope you have also

joined the vaccinationsonelist list. There are many

nurses,chiropractors, etc. on that list also which are highly educated in

the topics of both vaccines and allergies.

because I would not use them. One allergy doctor said regarding oral

steroids,

I relized I was getting no where and I started researching on my own.

Boy was I shocked! I stumbled on vaccine information. I feel that my son

may have been born with a certain gene, but I strongly feel his

vaccinations made him worse. He had the 'typical' fever and slight

swelling with all his vaccines. With his MMR though, he broke out in a

measles like rash. The office staff said it was the worst they had ever

seen in that office, The doctor was very nonchalant about it.

I never liked vaccines. I just thought I had no choice. Now I know

different, although I see it wont be easy. My daughter has had all

vaccinations up to date. The poor thing had three shots a few months

ago! I do not want to continue.

I am here because I need advice and support. I also need to hear people

tell me that I can help or even cure my son. I am really scared. We had

W are from Midland park which is Bergen County. (Northern N.J) The first

Doctor we were seeng was a Environmental Dr. in N.J. I am afraid to say

his name, could I get in trouble?! He worked with EPD shots.

(Enzyme/allergen shots). He was very pushy about them and did not liked

to be questioned. He even told me I read to much and used the iternet

for information to much. I guess the only information I was allowed to

have was when I paid him $150. (uncovered) He told me I needed a diet

'consult' from him for my son. When I went, he talked about himself most

of the time and at the end told me not to feed my son nuts, fish or soy.

(we already knew this) Also due to my sons Candida yeast overgrowth he

said it was all right to feed him only water and vegies and he would eat

them when he was hungry enough Then he told me to buy a book on rotation

diets. (I guess reading what I pay him to find out is ok.) He also told

me to order special Vitamines. I did-cost me $30 dollars. I opened them

and relized they contain soy, he cant even use them and its to late to

return them.

Meanwhile I got the book and it wasnt helpful to me. I called him and

left a message saying so and telling him we were dissapointed in our

consult. Instead of calling me back, he faxed a three page letter to my

husbands job. Part of which he said that parents are better at putting

diets togeither. Now remember, he TOLD me to see him for a diet. Also he

said if we were going to consider still seeing him, we must set up

'ground rules' first! This is only the tip of the iceberg. I want to

write him back, but it is still so upseting to me.

Anyway, I have called a Naturopathic Dr.

She is going to give me a free 10 min. consult on thursday. I will let

The first sign that Kathleen now 6 had allergies other than dairy was the

day she had her first MMR in August of 1994. After her shot we drove home

and when she woke she screamed so terribly that the doctor sent us to the

pharmacy for Emetrol. He never had the sense to test a child with severe

milk protien allergies for an egg allergy; the MMR is in an egg-based

solution!

After 24 hours of complete hell Kathleen returned to normal and dairy and

eggs have never been introduced into her diet. From the time she was 6mths

old she reacted to soy also(which she had been on since birth but developing

a soy allergy over time is commonplace) and placed on rice milk. Kathleen

thrived on rice milk and rice cereal and fruits from that time on. Slowly

we introduced i food at a time but for the first two years almost everything

caused diarrhea,eczema, and other rashes. Anything that even touched dairy

products caused severe curded vomitting and sometimes an asthma attack.

Basically she became very sheltered and limited to where i would take her.

For 4 1/2 years her diet consisted of rice milk, rice, fruits,

pasta,homemade meatballs, chicken, bread, and sorbet.

When it was time for her to go to school we did the subcutaneous allergy

testing and she came up clear. For the past 1 1/2 years we have let her try

1 new food at a time but are very cautious especially about dairy.

The upswing is that keeping her off so many things for so long has given her

immune system time to strengthen itself and other than overdoing

dairy,popcorn, and chocolate she does well with everything else now.

The seasonal allergies are another story and harder to control for us.

When Kathleen was 18mths she turned blue 24hrs after the Christmas tree came

through the door. She had pneumonia and was wheezing badly. Needless to say

the tree went to the yard and now we have an artificial one. But even with

these knock on wood each year her reactions are less and less.

Well one thing is for sure that this is not easy and very scary. I think

there is no coincidence that both our children had the reaction to the MMR

and I refused to give Kathleen the 2nd MMR at 5 and have had no trouble with

the schools at all. I wish that this had made me more afraid of vaccines and

could have been spared but I am a chemist and believed at the time

that vaccination was safe.

How do I go about learning other remedies for things beside antibiotics?

Hi, Marcie.

A good start would be the book " Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child " by

Zand, Walton & Rountree. It lists all the different childhood illnesses and

all the different ways of treating them, including conventional, herbal,

homeopathic, aromatherapy, etc. It's a great book and a good start on your

own library. I have lots of other books, but find myself referring to that

one most often.

" Mothering " magazine usually has good information. There is quite a

selection of magazines out there now that deal with herbs and homeopathy

(whichever one you are into). Of course, it's nice to have it specifically

for a child.

I also receive a newsletter each month called " The Green Guide " . It is put

out by the organization Mothers & Others For a Livable Planet. It is not at

all specific on alternative health treatments, but does contain loads of

information on health issues and does gear often towards how it affects

children and what we can do about it. (For example, they will devote an

issue to high lead and how to get your child tested, what products to not

have in the home, how to change your cooking and cookware to avoid it, etc.)

They have an e-mail address greenguide@... (I think it's $10 a year

for a monthly newsletter).

Also, I have found lots of information at Weil's website (I also get

his newsletter). It is not geared towards children, but has good information

there (if you can overlook that he advocates vaccines). His site is

There was also a website that I checked out in detail awhile ago, and haven't

thought about - it was put out by a doctor (I think his last name was

mercola?). The site was www.mercola.com (or whatever his name was). Can

anyone help with that one - I can't remember? He had lots of links and such

I too don't discuss our " radical " (I prefer to think of them as educated)

choices regarding our 6 month old daughter with my family. State propaganda,

as you so aptly put it, is tough to fight.

I don't encounter too many other parents that seem too compelled to

investigate what's being shot into their children. Seems like people are more

interest in spending time looking at Consumer Report to determine what kind

of home entertainment center they should get then putting even a meager

amount of effort into researching their kids' health.

Because we couldn't find a pediatrician that would agree to meet / consult /

discuss the pros and cons of immunization without requiring prompt

vaccination, we don't have a pediatrician. 6 months have passed and she sure

seems like a healthy girl - - of course, I'm breast feeding... But as

parents, we want to do the right thing. I guess I'd like to take her for

check-ups...although, and this I don't understand, I don't routinely go to a

Dr. for a well-adult check-up...so what makes my daughter any different?

I'm so happy to have found this list. Sometimes,my husband and I feel very

isolated because our thoughts on the issue of vaccination (and others

regarding birth and child care) differ so much from what seems like the

overwhelming majority of other parents. It's comforting to know we're not

alone.

that you are not alone. My son has turned into a tight

ball of nerves. He will not open up and tell anything

about what he is feeling........then in one explosion

his anger comes out and it gets out of control. I will

Hi Anne:

Welcome to our list. You will find many of us here with

similar experiences to those you so clearly described in your post to the

list. I also have a 12-year-old son with OCD. Steve has the flavor with

major depressive disorder and also has PTSD-Type 1. We have encountered

the aggressive and difficult behaviors particularly in the early days

following his diagnosis. Sometimes these were BSEs from the meds,

sometimes they were from his great disappointment and frustration about

having OCD and adjusting to the reality of what this means in his life,

sometimes they were from massive OCD attacks with incredible fear, and

sometimes I think they were from just being a pre-teen out of control.

I am very interested in your observations about the effects of puberty on

OCD as we expect this to be the next hurdle now that Steve is going into

Grade 7.

What we found helpful was reading books like Dr. Greene's " The Explosive

Child " and Dr. Barkley's " The Defiant Child " and negotiating a family

contract regarding behaviors and consequences (positive and negative, but

with the emphasis on the former). I recommend changing the parenting, it

is very hard work, quite emotional but you will reap the rewards. Many

people have commented to me how much better both our boys are behaving and

coping since we did this. In fact our whole family sees this as an

achievement. This took months to do but the results have been worth it.

Also as Steve has what I call hypermorality OCD he can respond eventually

to what is expected of him. The best thing was getting him good CBT and

this has allowed him to drop his level of meds.

Another technique that has helped us a lot is paradoxical therapy.

Responding differently to what they expect often helps them refocus away

from OCD, also humor is helpful to everyone. It took a lot for me to

lighten up enough to do this and I had to get a lot of training from

Steve's present psychologist but it has been invaluable.

You are so right talking to them about their OCD often causes an attack.

It is best not to talk about it until they are in a good place with it.

This does make getting the hierarchy hard. It took Steve six months to

fess up his hierarchy and that was frustrating as we did his CBT based on

what we saw which meant we were mostly addressing things at the top of the

hierarchy, making for rather explosive sessions.

We are also going to the OCF conference in July. Steve's CBT therapist is

also going to the conference as she has family in Virginia. I look forward

to meeting you at the Friday night support group. You are lucky to have

such a group in your area, the only other people I know here with kids with

OCD have adult children and the issues are sufficiently different that I am

quite envious of your group in White Plains.

Hi Anne,

Welcome to the list. You'll find a lot of helpful information here. Since I

have a busy schedule, I don't repond much to the list.

My son, is often rude. But, I'm not sure if it's OCD, or just 16 year

old thing. But, when I told him his rudeness, he often recognized and

apologized.

As far as DC trip goes, I'm still trying to convince CHris to go. I know other

families are going. I don't know how many.

Welcome Dunbar. My husband, also diagnosed about 2 1/2 years ago, decided

against the interferon with ribovarin because of the side effects. Has it

been difficult for your husband? What about the interferon alone?

Do you know about Milk Thistle? (It is an herb that cleanses the liver.) My

husband takes six 70 mg tablets a day.

Have you been tested? I am carrying around an order for lab work that my

doctor has given me, but haven't done it yet (you know, " if you don't want to

know the answer, don't ask the question " ). At this point it would be like

closing the barn door after the horse got out, but I conduct myself as if I

have it so that no one else catches it. Tree

It hasn't been a lot of fun but he's been getting through it pretty good.

We try and adjust around it as much as possible. He had a worse time on the

interferon alone but when he started he had been very sick.

Milk Thistle! That was the one I was trying to remember the other day.

Yes I was tested, within a month of my husbands diagnosis. He was really

upset that he could have possibly passed this on to me. I tested negative.

To be on the safe side we had our children tested also, he was afraid the

boys could have picked up his razor and used it. But all three of our

children also tested negative.

We have been married for 21 years and now since his diagnosis we practice

" safe sex " , that is at my husbands insistance - he is very careful to

limit the possibility of someone contracting this from him.

Hi (dunbar),

I am also very new to this list. I believe I have HepC for about 25

years, but it was not confirmed until1994 when one doc wanted me to go

on interferon but three others did not because of my other medical

problems. I have had heart surgery twice and have a mitochondrial

disorder.
