Sorry it depends on what state you are in. In OK plus 3 other states you

DO NOT get Medicaid irregardless of whether you are on SS UNLESS you are under

the poverty level. That is why we had to move across country again. Lucas could

not get health insurance for 80k in bills per year even though my only income is

SSDI. They also do not have a spend down AND their TEFRA only takes care of kids

that costs are less than 40k per year. I went to the top of DHS, and the

Govenors office and legislatures as well as the Health Care Authority. I also

went to WA DC over it and their was NOTHING I could do. I was told my only

option was to leave the state. I could not even buy him insurance because of his

pre-existing conditions.

We applied for a TEFRA Waiver for Blake when he was 3.....went though lots of

hoops & jumped over several barrells but he was finally granted the waiver 18

months later & it was retro to 3 months before we applied for the waiver(ad to

paaly for medicaid and SSI & get denied before TEFRA would be considered). Blake

is 18 & he has both insurance & THe TEFRA Waiver. If you apply for SSI & get

it, they automatically start you on medicaid(yes you can still keep the

insurance, but it will be primary & medicaid is secondary until the primary is

done away with)

Not sure about others on here, but I do see alot of Medicaid users, but in Ohio

u cant make over a certain amount of money, so we would never qualify for that

for Makenzie, we just have our insurance thru my hubbys work.

since Blake is 18 his SSI is based on him. Not what I have. Blake is getting the

max. that SSI will legally give(in sc that is).  If we apply for SC Disability,

he can lose his SSI benefits..  In SC you DO automatically get medicaid with

SSI.  Now Blake can go to work & only earn a certain amt. before his SSI is

affected. In SC the folks ho want to work, do have to be careful or the can lose

medicaid IF the job offers good insurance while they are employed.

I do understand this is a state to state issue.  Blake has not had SSI before

now. we only had the TEFRA Waiver which pays for the bills AFTER primary(BCBS)

takes care o the bill...so far we have NO had any residual bills come back for

Blake since he was given the Waiver at age 4.

It doesn't hurt to try. Any thing for the children is worth trying for!!

I am sorry that you have had a hard time & ad to move from one place to

another....I can only imagine how hard that is to uproot you & your family!!!

  • 6 months later...

Hello All,

I recently lost my Medicaid benefits since I was a measly $169 over the limit. I

got a job 8.50/hr for 15hrs/week. This was before my neck surgery.

I still have disability (for a brain tumor)and Medicare BUT I'm wondering if

anyone here that works had the same issue with Medicaid(which pays the Medicare

premium). Also lost most of my SNAP benefits.

Does anyone know how and when I should reapply? I'm not working so I'm thinking

this might be the best time.

Any fback is appreciated.

Dana:-)

If its the federal program, I was told by the county assistance office

that it is based on a month to month basis as to whether you qualify or

not.

It really stinks that you have to wait TWO FULL YEARS from the time you are

deemed disabled to be eligible for medicare. That's crazy. You are disabled but

they hold off on allowing you to get insurance?

I know  that  so  wierd.  they  find  yo disable  but  will give  up

medical

insurance  to  get  treatment  for  two  year  what  that  all  about.

that

federal goverenment  for you.  I was  lucky  kinda it  told  4year  to

get  my

hear  so I  waited  already  for  the  insurance. Here  in  washington

state

they  are  so  back log it  crazy.  so  how  long  you got  left  to

wait.

look into medicaid you may  be  able  to  get  that  while  waiting

for

medicare  to kick in  Steve

They had all of my information for over a year and finally approved it. (No

denials them just being slow). My medicare starts in June of next year. I don't

understand any of it. The supplementals, etc. heck I don't even know what it

covers!!
