Guest guest
My daughter was also a special needs adoption, I was able to get Medicaid before Social Security. Call your local Medicaid office (this is different from the social security office. Ask to speak to someone familiar with special needs adoption. Then set up an appointment with this person. If you need more information, let me know. I'd be happy to talk to you about this. Richter 630-377-8344 Medicaid Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me save some time. My daughter currently is covered by Medicaid as a special needs adoption. This will end on her 21st birthday. We are having a difficult time being aproved for social security. I am doing it with the help of our local agency. I really cannot afford an attorney unless it gets desperate. Anyway, my question is can we get Medicaid before social security, based simply on her lack of income? Is there a Medical necessity requirement for Medicaid? My fear is that her Home Based services are Medicaid based if I understand correctly. I sure don't want to risk losing that which I worked so hard to get because Social Security is fighting us now. I tried calling and asking the question but was told I have to come in, which means a full day sitting in their office just to be told no. Thanks to all of you for all of the great advice and support. Gloria
Guest guest
Ellen is right. Make sure you apply for Medicaid. Our little girls is covered under our insurance policy and has Medicaid. Our HMO has a co-pay, sometimes $15-$45. We use our Medicaid card for Rx now so we pay nothing for Rx. Our HMO pays everything else. TED -- McCannon Enterprises 45W134 Rd. Guest guest
It is hard for me to believe that you got home based services without being deemed eligible for medicaid. You could check with your Independent Service Coordination Agency...they could also start you on the path toward application for medicaid if they find that you have not applied. Guest guest
That was my question. We applied for medicaid when we were funded in August. My son has not yet received a medicaid approval. Is this medicaid adoption that then requires that I reapply or is the real deal once he's approved? Guest guest
Christy, You apply for Medicaid at your local DHS office. You can use your personal insurance to pay for doctors, etc. We use Medicaid to pay for prescriptions. Home waiver is separate from Medicaid. TED -- McCannon Enterprises 45W134 Rd. Guest guest
My understanding and what I was told when was turning 18 and looking at establishing eligibility for the adult service system is that you have to apply. It doesn't mean you have to get it...but part of the hoop jumping is that you have tried to access this resource first. The denial should be proof of your attempts. Of course, things change...maybe something has changed. I would also recommend a call to Marcie...she'll know the facts. Guest guest
regarding medicaid...it is more than the offering of medical insurance. the medicaid waiveris source that all services will be provided. this means we all have to go through the PUNS process and apply for the medicaid waiver .. I would suppose there are agencies that would do some support service if consumers could " self Pay.

Guest guest
Is Medicaid a separate application. I live in Morton Grove and my son turned 18 on New Years day. We applied for SSI on the 11th. I thought that also covered Medicaid. I am wrong. Does Medicaid go through Community Alternatives? CA and I keep playing phone tag. Guest guest
Yes, SSI and Medicaid are two separate application processes. If your son qualified for SSI than he will qualify for Medicaid. Medicaid is rquired to access adult services through the Medicaid Waiver funding that pays for adult supports and services for people with developmental disabilities. We used Sherri Schneider (Family Benefit Solutions, 847/279-8506)) for our application for SSI and Medicaid. The application and instructions are available at http://www.dhs.state.il.us/ts/fss/pdf/IL444-2378b.pdf You will need a state ID (for you and your child), social security card, copy of birth certificate, guardianship papers/power of attorney papers, SSI benefits confirmation and copies of monthly bills (proof SSI is being usef for child's living expenses) The two local office locations are Lake County in Park City and Skokie. I am sure these will be on the website. I am taking the information from a fact sheet dated 6/05...so...I am hoping this information is still current. Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... Guest guest
When our son was approved for medicaid, he began and continues to receive that slip of paper month by month. This is his identification card to determine if he is 'on medicaid'. I would go to you pharmacy andask them to check his medicaid number to determine if he is still an active member in the " system', since you began receiving them monthly. No letter no explanation. I have still not received anything for Feb. or March and still no letter or communication from them. Has anyone else had this happen? Guest guest
No, we never got any other explanation except the slip of paper. And, yes, he should have continued getting them. When we first had a prescription for him, his father took it to the pharmacy and they looked up his number and told him that he was in the system. That is the only reason I suggested that. I realize it is very hard to get through to even 'talk' to someone at times. Medicaid Can anyone shed any light on this for me? I finally got Chris qualified for Medicaid at the end of Jan. Guest guest
This happen to us. It was explained to me by their office. They give you approval right away before the paper work is totally processed (still sitting on someone's desk). Then it is sent on to the person that will be handling it. The first paper shows you were approved for the first two months. Then your approval runs out till the next person does the final paper work. About two months later you will start getting slips each month showing your Medicad is enforce. So you will end up with two months with NO coverage. This happens because they are under staff and can not process the paper work fast enough. Hope this answers your question. IT'S IN THE MAIL ha!ha! TED -- McCannon Enterprises 45W134 Rd. He surrently receives home based services through the waiver program so therefore he is part of the all kids program. 1.Do I need to apply for medic aid or is he already approved? 2. Guest guest
Mar, We had to apply for Medicaid seperately after started getting SSI when he was 18. We went to the Medicaid office & yes, you can have private insurance & Medicaid. You have to have one be primary & the other secondary. We use my insurance as primary, as has some docs who won't take Medicaid. Then his Medicaid is secondary. If he gets moved into a CILA, I'm hoping he'll be able to stay on my insurance, so he can still go to his neurologist. Liz --------------------------------- You rock.
