However, your nervous system is compromised mainly because of lack of

proper nutrients, and particularly " good " fats. Nerve cell membranes

must also be constructed out of 50% saturated fat (butter, lard,

coconut oil, etc.) and when they aren't they become damaged. It

takes nerve cells 7 years to regenerate so changing them over takes

time. While other cells in the body regenerate much faster, for

example cells lining the intestines only take 4 days, and the liver

regenerates once a month.

Hi Lucinda in NC,

Please speak to your surgeon about your depression

problem. Its hard to analyse the situation from far but if you will be

little open to your family members and doctor, it would be a help for

you. Depression after any surgery is common. There is a fear if we

will be able to come back to a normal life or not. A counseller can

help.

Depression is just a part of the process. My pre-op classes told us about

it. If it gets really bad the Dr. will give you med's. You can try

smoothing music, watching a light hearted movie or TV show, reading a nice

light story or novel. The depression will generally pass with just thinking

" uplifting " thoughts. For me, since I knew that it was part of the process,

cried a little that said OK, let's get on with it, read some daily sayings

and when I'd feel the depression " pull " would start taking action.

I agree with Gloria. I am a Physio and what I can advise you is that

you share this with your surgeon. Depression is also one of the side

affects of sedatives which patients has to take inorder to nulify pain

experience. speak to your family members and just try to stay positve

about the whole thing.

ran out of Oxycodone, so had to take Hydrocodone for a day. That did

it for me. I know certain pain meds affect people differently. Glad to

be back on Oxycodone (I only need one every 6 hours with Extra

Strength Tylenol in between). Plus, when you are out of your routine

for any reason, especially medical, depression can come on quickly. It

helps me to read the posts. I am a therapist, also, so I know!

Lucinda,

I have been depressed since my first TKR August 31, 2004 and now had

the same knee replaced again. So for almost four years now, my

depression hasn't changed because my knee replacements haven't

worked. I hope that your depression goes away as your knee gets

better.

It sounds like everything is going well for you but you have to keep

on doing those exercises to get the flexion. Maybe you could ask

your doctor about getting a brace that you can put on your leg and

cranking it up every five to ten minutes and it does straighten your

leg. It is a Static Progressive Stretch brace. Just mention it to

him/her that you heard of it and if it possible to rent one or maybe

your insurance will cover it. A CPM Machine might even help your

flexion.

I am 59 and had a TKR in 2004. Now I guess due to all the limping, I have

worn my hip

joint out and need a THR!! I had the same problem post op with oxycodone. I

took lots of it the first week, I guess I was more afraid of having pain

than actually having it. Anyway, I became very crabby and depressed. I took

myself off of it and immediately was better. Oxycodone is strong !

I would just like to point out that I've noticed (with my patients) that

most people hit a depression at about two weeks out, some of it is " chemical

fog " just the buildup of the codeine in your system, and some of it is

reactive, like a let down after surviving such a major event in your life.

Seems to show up either as crying like you're talking about or sometimes

just a round of stomach upsets. I sure experienced it after both TKR's, a

day when I just kept crying though I knew my therapy was going fine and I

couldn't figure out why I was crying.

So it seems to be pretty " normal " . Everybody has their own oway of dealing

with these " downs " in life, from distraction, meditation, or just doing

something really nice for yourself.

Hi Alida and ,

We can only feel freedom from pain when we travel at the speed of the body,

rather than the speed of our mind, or the speed of our neighbor's body!

I have a kooky theory about hips and pain.

I hope that this does not stir up the doctors and PTs out there, but I believe

in the

Mind/ Body Connection (If you've read Dr Sarno's book about back pain you know

better what I mean) and with an artificial joint,the neighboring muscles do not

get the skeletal feedback that they used to receive (in the form of pain in most

of our cases) from a mechanical joint. This,I believe, makes the surrounding

muscles go on high alert, gripping and seizing up in new ways, as a form of

protection.

Add in the fact that the pelvis (hips) house our reproductive organs which help

us evolve, it's no wonder that many of us experience new kinds of ligamental and

muscular sensations.

What I have done (and it has worked well for me) is to " talk to my pain " (this

is where you doctors can go to another post!) and see if I can illicit some more

release.

ANyway, I know it sounds crazy but after my 2nd THR, i resumed my yoga practice

and when I stood on my formerly crackling ,grinding bad leg, In my HEAD I was

anticipating the grinding and was VERY fearful of that position. SO I mindfully

talked myself away from the ledge of (imaginary)pain and moved veeery slowly

through the poses that used to hurt. After one week, my ROM doubled!

I had my THR revision 9 weeks ago and started crying daily after that. I've

been through a lot unrelated to surgery and was rarely this way. I can cry on

cue and then some! The surgeon said to talk to my regular dr about it--I

hadn't even mentioned the word. I'm sure it more than the situation I'm in

(fatigue/weakness, pain, etc.) that triggered it so I did some research and

found

that it is not unusual.

I'm concerned for you. I had to change my relationship with food, and that is hard. I had to find another way to cope with stress as food was my vice. This sounds more serious. Are you in touch with a local doctor to discuss this? Suicidal thoughts are very serious, and please, Please, PLEASE see your doctor to discuss this. I had low energy, and tried to get my protein and water in--this does make a difference in how you will feel.

I haven't heard of anyone having major depression after surgery but I

am familiar with depression. You need to get to a psychiatrist pretty

quick and get a recommendation for a therapist who specializes in

weight loss so you can start feeling better. Sorry you are going

through this, it could be some hormonal changes triggered by the

surgery.

First off you need to talk to someone right away. But what i experienced is this kind of loosing myself in all of this. It was like i was this person for so many years and now I am changing, and i have to figure out who i am. Almost like a death, and grieving over this person whom you were. That was my experience. I was very outgoing and felt very confident when i was out because i knew people really liked me for me because i was bigger. Now when people talk to me it is almost like i am questioning there reason to. The attention i get is amazing and I sometimes am saying to myself , what i wasn't good enough before?

Please get some help to understand all the emotions that come with the weight loss. And also understand it is normal to have these emotions. As i said i felt a bit of a death of the old me. I am working now on the new me.. And that person will even be better , because i still am that person. Just showing a little less of me:) . Please , Please talk to someone right away. And i hope my words have helped you even a little. If you need to talk let me know , i am a great listener.

,You need to see a Dr. today. It is very hard to get into a good psychiatrist (at least in my area, it is) so go to your regular Dr. and let them know what is going on. Give him ALL the details on how you feel and what you are going through. He/she may be able to give you a referral and get you into a psychiatrist ASAP. My psychiatrist has appt's open in his day that ONLY his nurse can schedule for situations like this!! I have dealt with depression all my life and dealing with weight loss and not being able to eat myself into "happiness" is a huge process. I was off all medication for a while preparing to get pregnant but we put those plans off for a year or so, so I welcmed the chance to jump back on my prozac. My only issue is that it takes a few (2-3)

weeks for it to start to work. That is why it is soooo important to see someone now, so you don't get further into the depression before the medication can kick in. There are lots of options out there for med's so don't give up until you get the right one :) Please keep us posted and let us know how you are. Take care,Cyrena

, I think I certainly have had my bouts with depression since I

had the surgery and for me, I have found it to be more about my

overwhelming addiction to food and the way that I used that addiction

to maintain my lifestyle for almost 30 years. Once the surgery was

had, I was forced to lay off the carbs, or as I like to call them, " my

prozac " , and deal with MY issues both personal and food centered. THAT

has not been as easy as the weight loss has been. Truth be told ,

you're possibly grieving the loss of a dear friend, FOOD, who was

there for you and never made you feel inadequate, who got you through

the hard times, and supported you when others chose not to. Now FOOD,

your buddy, your pal, your confidant, is on the outs and that means

that whatever drove you to eat, is there without that wonderful food

buffer. It makes all the rational sense in the world that you would

grieve for the one entity that hasn't let you down this far. I know I

did and still do, especially when I'm stressed and tired, which is

what surgery makes us physically. Let me encourage you , if you

are suicidal, to make a call to a counselor....someone who works with

those of us who have food issues, eating disorders they call them, and

talk this through with her. Let her offer you the support you need to

bid your friend farewell and to embrace the beauty that is your new

life. Most insurances cover these costs and if not, every university

worth its salt has a counseling department and their professionals are

trained in these areas and work on a sliding scale. One last thing,

let me encourage you, that while this isn't easy, this too shall pass

and one day very soon, you'll be on the other side of skinny and the

view there, of yourself, is quite wonderful as well! You can do this!

Hi,

Bee's diet really help with depression. I believe depression is one of

the major signs of candida.

Also, recognizing that the depression is " not who you are " and that it

is a symptom of the candida can be very helpful. I hope that doesn't

sound like I'm minimalizing the affects depression can have on people,

because that is not my intention.

I think keeping an open mind and knowing that it can improve will help

as well.

I also suffer from depression but I have been just trying to accept my

depression when it hits. I just go right into it, allow it, don't fight it.

Mope around watching movies all day for a couple of days - ring a friend and

cry - write in my journal if I can/want to and it lifts more quickly than

when I fight it.

Hi Paige. Citracal will cause you problems because 1) you aren't as

able to regulate the amount of vitamin D you take, 2) that product

doesn't list the " elemental amount " of calcium, which is the amount

absorbed, so you may be getting too little, 3) the vitamin D source

isn't listed on the product, which probably means it is synthetic

vitamin D.

Buy calcium citrate which states the amount of " elemental calcium " on

the label, and the same goes for magnesium citrate. NOW omega will

contain only omega 3, and not vitamin A. In the Summer when you get

enough vitamin D from the sun (read about the amount of exposure you

need in my main candida article), you take Omega 3 from a fish oil,

plus vitamin A 20,000 - 30,000 IUs per day from a fish liver oil

product such as cod, halibut or shark.

If you do not get enough sun exposure you take cod liver oil which

contains omega 3, and vitamins A and D - see this article for some

products and their nutrients levels:

One of the reason you are getting depressed is because you aren't take

the correct supplements, and particularly you need vitamin A and the

proper amount of vitamin D. The " good " fats all work together, mainly

with omega 3, and vitamins A, D & E, so all of them are required in the

amounts recommended.

Second, many people can become depressed while their bodies are

detoxifying, because of the high numbers of toxins circulating

Hello,

I am very concerned about you. This type of depression is very serious and

you need help NOW! When someone says they're feeling suicidal it needs to be

taken seriously. This is not the time to be talking about self help remedies.

Are you on meds now and if so what are you on? Please feel free to email me

privately. I am very worried about you and I know from experience you don't

have to live this way. It may take time to find the right person to help you

but there is HOPE my friend! There is a time and place for meds and your

situation is one of them. But many docs and hospitals want to fill people with

several meds and it can make your situation worse. Also coming off a med needs

to be done very carefully and the docs don't know how to do that correctly

either.

It sounds like you need to go to the hospital but you need an advocate to

help you decide what meds are best for you.

Hello there,

Just wanted to say hello & hang in there. I've been thru some serious

depression too & the only thing that keeps me going is the thot that

my kids love me so much. Each time I'm sick & end up in the hospital,

they are crying for me to come home & they miss me so much. I feel so

bad for being mean to them sometimes coz I really lose my patience.

It's not easy to be " nice " and handle all these symptoms at the same

time. And yet, they have unconditional love for me. We all need to

find our little something to live for. Just focus on getting thru

each day. Affirmations & meditation help me thru difficult days.

My heart goes out to you. I hope that u will find help with this

group & that you'll start to feel better soon.

I can speak to this... I've had a running battle with depression

for some time now. Here are some of the skirmishes.

My wife and I both have SAD. We've found vitamin D3 and exercise

to really help.

I've got a pituitary problem that acts like an adenoma, but not too bad.

My cortisol burden is 84 (range < 42) and 100 or greater would be

diagnosed as Cushing's. Anyway, this results in systemically low

hormones except for cortisol and aldosterone.

This kept me pretty depressed. About 6 months ago, I began treatment

for hypothyroid. My depression was banished, until it was time for

each dose increase. I'm stable at 2 grains now, but depression crept

back in. Replacement of some other hormones cleared that up and

life was good again.

The latest bout was due to the fact that my diet and exercise program

got my cholesterol and triglyceride numbers from being 50% over the

reference range to 25 % below the reference range, which causes

depression. I now supplement my diet with lots of happy fats, especially

fish, hemp & flax oils and I cook with ghee (clarified butter). I think I

can go off of the antidepressants, finally!

So, to recap, I can personally attest to these causative agents of depression:

Vitamin D deficiency

Not enough exercise

Low thyroid hormones

Other low hormones

Excess cortisol

Too low cholesterol

Man, it's a wonder we aren't all on antidepressants... I guess a

lot of us are, but if more physicians were aware of all of these

causes of depression, less of us would be on them, and more

of us would be healthier.

I have experienced depression on too little Armour, and also too little

iodine! I really think that Armour should be dosed from 180--300mg, so a dose

of 120mg doesn't sound right to me. I also think " excess cortisol " means you

need cortisol, if youcan't go beyond 120mg Armour.

I can speak to this... I've had a running battle with depression

for some time now. Here are some of the skirmishes.

My wife and I both have SAD. We've found vitamin D3 and exercise

to really help.

I've got a pituitary problem that acts like an adenoma, but not too bad.

My cortisol burden is 84 (range < 42) and 100 or greater would be

diagnosed as Cushing's. Anyway, this results in systemically low

hormones except for cortisol and aldosterone.

This kept me pretty depressed. About 6 months ago, I began treatment

for hypothyroid. My depression was banished, until it was time for

each dose increase. I'm stable at 2 grains now, but depression crept

back in. Replacement of some other hormones cleared that up and

life was good again.

The latest bout was due to the fact that my diet and exercise program

got my cholesterol and triglyceride numbers from being 50% over the

reference range to 25 % below the reference range, which causes

depression. I now supplement my diet with lots of happy fats, especially

fish, hemp & flax oils and I cook with ghee (clarified butter). I think I

can go off of the antidepressants, finally!

So, to recap, I can personally attest to these causative agents of depression:

Vitamin D deficiency

Not enough exercise

Low thyroid hormones

Other low hormones

Excess cortisol

Too low cholesterol

Man, it's a wonder we aren't all on antidepressants... I guess a

lot of us are, but if more physicians were aware of all of these

causes of depression, less of us would be on them, and more

of us would be healthier.

Sorry if this isn't completely cogent, my Armour hasn't kicked in yet.

Hi Gracia,

Thanks for that. FYI, on the 24 hour assay, I produced 84 units

of cortisol. The upper end of the range is 42. If it had been 16

points higher, I would be diagnosed with Cushing's, and have the

equivalent of a knitting needle stuck up my nose to yank the pesky

little pituitary adenoma out by its roots. I certainly don't want to

take any more cortisol because I'm already making at least twice

as much as I'm supposed to.

I may make it up to 3 grains of Armour, but I don't want my thyroid

completely suppressed. I'm shooting for a TSH of about 1 and

free T3/4 in the top 1/4 of their ranges. For now, 2 grains is doing

that.
