Guest guest
Jan, thank you so much for your sweet post. I think I would have recovered much faster if I had had some rest and not had to throw that dinner. It went very very well, a real feast, but I don't know if it was a great idea. Doc gave me four more days of Augmentin, said ears are in the process of healing but not healed up yet. I asked if he thinks the 4 more days will be enough, he said you can't do more than 14 days of Augmentin, your stomach can't take it. I think I'd rather take that chance than dance around with this ear infection not getting resolved. I thought I was getting Kate's flu the day I went to my doc, I was soooo tired and actually fell asleep with my head on his desk before he came in. (no fever though) Turned out, a fair night's sleep and a three hour nap on New Year's Day were enough to really get me turned around. Kate's GREAT! I do think the Tamiflu helped. She slept through the night last night for the first time since the flu hit. We're convinced that it really was the flu. EMILY IS FINE!!!!! 'Course, she's acting like a DEMON so that could be post-Christmas letdown, all the attention the sick Kate was getting, cabin fever from not being in school, boredom due to sick/nonfun/busy Mommy, or impending sinus infection. I don't know but she's just impossible right now. But HEALTHY!!!! I am sooooooooooo happy. (but not about the behavior!) Happy New Year to you! (mom to Kate, born 9/19/02, dairy intolerant; and , age 4-1/2, GERD, dairy intolerant -- currently has polysaccharide antibody def, previously had transient IgG, IgA, t-cell & other defs)

I am very busy looking after 5 kids right now and feel guilty for not posting as often. I have had Achalasia for 12 years, and have learned how to cope on a daily basis. Guest guest
Hi Jan, Thanks for your response. The talk about adrenal fatigue has caught my eye lately. I have been looking up info on it, rather confusing since the symtoms are so similar to hypo systoms. Also read that people with adrenal fatigue are often misdiagsed as being hypo. I don't believe that's the case with myself, because my mother was severly effected by Graves disease. Interesting enough, just thinking about how I react to stress might be a red flag for adrenal fatigue. I fly off the handle when aggitated (which could just be horones). However, I do get physically sick lately when emotionally upset, I feel nausious, light headed, and physically limp. I have to lay down and nap for it to go away. The dizzy spells I was referring to have happened twice in the past few months, each time lasting for a week straight. I do have a stressful job, the spells might have been caused from continuous stress overload, but I don't recall exactly what may have been going on before the spells started. I did buy into the docs Veritgo theory the first time it happened, but since it happened again, I think it's caused by something else. (whether adrenal or not) What tests do I need to ask for to determine if I have adrenal fatigue? What I've read about the condition sounds pretty scary, like wearing an ID bracelet, etc... Is it really as bad as it sounds, or were they referring to severe cases? Oh, and no I don't take any vitamins at all... Where do I get them and what brands should I be looking for? Thanks for your help, RE: Re: where do you go? Hi ! Well, the TSH is pretty useless anyway. Once you are on medication, it is good for nothing, there are several articles that state that. Did he order Free T3 and Free T4, or just T3 and T4? The Frees are the most accurate tests, but still don't replace a doctor who treats by symptoms. Odds are, such a doctor will *not* be an endocrinologist. You'd have better luck with an internist, an ND, or an OD. My doctor happens to be an endo and she is good, but she is the 37th endo I've seen, no kidding. For many of us, me for instance, my Total T3 and Total T4 have to be *above* the normal range for the Free T3 and Free T4 to be in the upper third of the normal range. Also, very few feel well just with a T4 medication, like Levoxyl - most need a combo of a T4 medication with a T3 medication, or to take Armour thyroid, since it contains all the thyroid hormone. Now, let's address the dizzy spells and the feeling like you are gonna puke. Those sound like hypoadrenal/adrenal fatigue symptoms. The adrenal glands are involved with the thyroid and the pituitary in an axis of hormone production. When one of them is out of balance, like with hypothyroidism, it makes the adrenals more likely to overproduce cortisol, and eventually to become exhausted and produce less cortisol, DHEA, and even sex hormones in extreme cases. It would also be beneficial to you to find a doctor who would test and check for symptoms of adrenal fatigue. In the meantime, are you taking vitamins? They are very important for hypothyroidism, and larger dosages of Bs and C (2-5g a day) are also important with adrenal fatigue. Jan

Guest guest
Hi , Sorry it took me so long to answer, my computer is broken. The most accurate tests for adrenal fatigue would be saliva tests, but still, like in thyroid disease, a doctor experienced in the condition to diagnose through symptoms is much better. It is not scary, it is really common with hypothyroidism. At least 40% of hypoT people have it. When compared to the hypothyroidism, it is a walk in the park. As for vitamins, most brands are fine, but you should make sure they have no soy-based fillers (might say " lecithin " instead of soy, or even " phytoestrogens " or " isoflavones " - all these are soy too), so you might have better luck with a health store brand instead of a drugstore one. Some people, like me, also don't take vitamins that have iodine in them. Look for a stress formula, antioxidant formula, or similar, that will have over 150% of the daily recommended amounts for most vitamins and minerals, since hypo people have difficulty processing vitamins. I take: 1 Optimum Nutrition multi (I buy whatever brand is cheaper provided it has much more than the recommended amounts, no iodine no soy, so I change between health store brands and Centrum Silver. I haven't found the perfect multi, so I like to change because some have more minerals, some have more Bs, so I figure I will never be more than 50 days low in whatever the one I am taking is deficient in. LOL) 1 Selenium + Vitamin E (this I get at the compounding pharmacy) 1 Omega 3 1 Flax Seed Oil (EFAs are also very important) 4-10 500mg Optimum Nutrition Vitamin C (it is a pain to take all those, but it is cheaper than buying 1g) Also, with adrenal fatigue, it is very important to be fast asleep by 11pm-1am, so if you regularly go to bed late, this is the first change to make. In fact, the little bit I do eat sits happily and securely in my esophagus for hours it seems until the weight of it ( I guess) seems to push it down eventually. After I eat I get a horrible feeling of pressure and pain in my chest. I don't feel like I can drink much to get the food to go down and drinking fluids does not help much. I feel that I can eat 1 very small "meal" a day, with a little snacking in between, depending on the type of food. Soup goes down about the best. I stay away from all fresh vegs and fruit , bread and dry meat. But all the soup I care to stuff in my throat! Hugs, Jan in NKY

Guest guest
Thanks for the good wishes,Cindi. This subacute stepdown unit I'm being cared for in is kind of like a building with several other uses. On the first floor is TCC Mellen Center for research into MS. They have a reading library/resourch room with a online computer. The dietitition showed it to me last week after I told her how depressed I was here. It kind of gets on your nerves, laying in bed so much. There are a few hallways to walk up and down, but not much. I also was wanting to read a little bit about what implications the removal of my spleen has, long term. They gave me a pnumonia vaccination already. I am really hoping to go home on Thursday, if Dr. Rice gives his okay tomorrow! Already I am dreaming about what I want to eat when I can get rid of this tube feeding business. Baby steps!, I have got to learn PATIENCE! Jan from NKY, still at TCC.

Once I get home I'll be able to convelense at home, and I will be spending lots of time on my computer. If there is any question I can answer for you about CC, let me know. It sure seems like you have to wait a long time before your next visit? or did you prefer it that way? Jan from NKY
