Guest guest Report post Posted February 16, 2003 And I'll bet you would have had trouble getting a hotel. Here in Raleigh the ice has started coming down this afternoon, just freezing rain prior to that. All trains have been stopped and they were showing people getting off the train with their blankets and pillows, saying they would have to stay in Raleigh. I sure hope they are able to get into hotels or something, that train station is very small with nothing but hard benches. Sure glad you stayed home. Hope everyone stays safe. Margaret >>> Alice Sawyer 02/16/03 06:39PM >>> Oh remember my trying to decide if I should go to NY. Well, it would have been a real disaster if I did. All buses out of NY are stopped. I would have had to get a hotel. Guest guest Report post Posted February 16, 2003 That definitely does not sound too comfortable. I hope they did get some shelter. Our airports are all closed. The Governor in his state of emergency said it may not be lifted until Tuesday. Can you believe the Med. Transc. at a University Hospital MUST COME IN. They are considered emergency personnel. If they don't come in they are docked pay and do not get to use it as a sick day or personal day. I guess we are important. I wonder if they show that to the employees all year round? Guest guest Report post Posted February 16, 2003 Aliceanne, Our MTs are considered emergency personnel also. But we all work at home, so we don't have to go anywhere. The same is true for one of the other hospitals in town. The other small nonprofit hospital outsources all of its work, so I don't even know if it is done locally. Sure is great to be working at home. BTW There are 20 transcriptionists on staff at our hospital and during the last ice storm only 4 had power and were able to work. Guest guest Report post Posted February 16, 2003 Oh, dear. The sun is out here and it is in the 50's. El Nino has been kind to us this year. Last time around we had a flood. Hope all of you in the ice and snow stay safe and warm. -- Re: Snow ME TOO. However, I would hate the ice more. We are in a state of Emergency which means only necessary or emergency driving allowed. Anyone on the road will be 1) arrested and car towed or 2) ticketed and car towed. The ice storm is to arrive tomorrow. Flooding along the shore line is also anticipated. Everything is shut down. Guest guest Report post Posted February 16, 2003 I think I would rather have the snow. That terrible ice storm we had in October knocked out power for days in some places around here (SW PA). We were lucky - we only had sporadic outages at our house. It's supposed to warm up on Wednesday and will probably melt a bunch of this. Besides, after the way this winter had been, two feet is nothing here in Somerset County, where we have the highest point in the state in Mt. . People who have lived here a long time are saying this is actually a " normal " winter, compared to the milder winters we have had the last few years. Guest guest Report post Posted February 16, 2003 Would you consider getting a cell phone for emergency use. I have one of the prepaid plans so if I am stuck on the road or if the aides need to reach me while I am traveling to my client, they can. I think they would work in a storm? Guest guest Report post Posted February 16, 2003 When I woke up this morning here in eastern VA, my car was encased in ice so bad I could hardly get the door open and was almost late to church. Now it is hovering just above freezing and most of the ice is gone. I know I should be hoping it doesn't get worse overnight as is predicted but I find myself feeling like a little kid who is hoping for a snow day. I would MUCH rather stay at home and study warm and cozy tomorrow than go to work and listen to customers complain about weather-related outages that we have no control over! Sure does make working from home look nice. Sylvia Roller M-TEC Student - Session 3 gentlsong@... AIM: Jntlsong ICQ: 383585 >Aliceanne, Our MTs are considered emergency personnel also.
