It'd be quite a bit less if you switched to drugstore.com. Check it out.

Sue,

Yeah depending on what dosage you have, but generally you just pay the

co-pay. But on my husbands insurance (yes we have different insurance plans

right now) he pays $15 for generic and $30 for name brand, where I pay $10

for generic and $15 for name brand-IF the pharmacy will fill name brand...

With my plan if there is a generic, thats what you get.....

Hi Penny,

Without insurance you may want to ask your doctor to switch you to PTU the

cost is so much less! And tell him that, or ask him to help you get reduced

drug costs or the drugs for free. There is a way to do that, maybe talk to

your pharmacy about it also. I didn't realize that TAP, even in generic

form was so expensive! I can't imagine what the name brand of TAP costs.

Jody,

I am in Oregon, and I never thought about it but I guess I did get it

in bulk. 100 50mg tabs for $26 (without insurance) $10 (with copay)

So even without insurance it still only cost me less than $10 a month

to be on PTU

Hi Sue and all

Thought I'd jump in here and let you know approximately what this

illness has cost me since May 2000 - $15,000

(approx. $30,000 US). I live in Sydney, I have private insurance - top

hospital cover. But when you add up the cost

of the prescriptions, the labs, other tests, the Drs bills, the excess

when in hospital there is so much more we pay for that our fund doesn't

cover. Our

government has tried to get everyone to join private health cover to

ease the demand on public health (medicare).

But it is not until you get sick that you realise as soon as you tell

the health people you have private cover

(doesn't matter what kind) you get slugged with the extras. My endo

charges $88 per vsist. My health fund pays none

and medicare pays $34 so every time I see him it costs me $54 (approx.

$108 US). Then the bloods cost $50 (approx

$100 US) out of my pocket. So on and so on.

Like Sue, I pay over $1,000 per year for health cover plus a medicare

levy on my tax. I do get some back on tax when

my medical expenses reach over $1,000 per year, but not much.

I don't think any of us has a good system. This illness has cost us all

plenty (and not just money). It sucks big

time.

Once again, we're going backwards on the exchange rate! $15,000 for you is

$7500 for us, as there are 1.94++ Australian dollars to every US one. Still,

there is no doubt that the cost of medical care and coverage is extreme.

Wish the system was simply that we pay (a fair amount) for everything but

the hospital/catastrophic stuff, directly to the doctor w/o insurance

getting their " take " and simply insure for the major stuff. Just imagine (at

least here in the US) how the doctor's fees would balance out once there was

a bit of good old capitalistic supply & demand and competition interjected

into the mix, and all the insurance co. profits removed! Then, there could

be some medicare coverage for the neediest as well, but based on " real "

costs rather than the mess we have to endure now.

Thanks Terry.

I realised later last night the mistake mistake I made in converting the dollars

and I planned to send a follow up

post today to clear it up. GD, babies, hormones all contribute to a massive

brain fog. Sometimes I wonder if I can

function at the level I used to ever again. Oh well, right now all I really need

to do is remember how to change

nappies and sing songs!!!!

Sorry everyone

Cheers

Caroline,

That's all you need to be doing right now, wish it were the case with me! I

only know cause we just had that discussion here, which you may have missed

while winnowing out the pithy posts from the ones you could safely let go

by.

Enjoy your little one and the moment.
