Well Peyton is 2 wks old today. We took him to his 10 day appt. on Tuesday

and he had gained 1 pound 6 ounces since his discharge the previous Monday.

I was so shocked since I have to wake him up to nurse. He sleeps for 6

hours at night and I bf him at 3 and then he wakes up at 730. BF is going

so well he is not a snacker like my son was. Alec is doing so well and just

loves his brother. I was even daring and on Monday Alec, Peyton and I went

to the mall, the grocery store, Target and the Park and it was so easy,

Peyton slept the whole time except when he wanted to nurse but I did that in

the park while Alec played and Alec held my hand the entire time at the

stores and was just an angel. I am recovering from the c-sect. But I am

happy to say that I have a clean house and two happy kids. Peyton is just

one content child and will sit and look around. I have made special time

for Alec and I and he seems to love that, although he wants to try nursing

and doesn't understand why I won't let him, just love the 2's. Although he

did try some from a bottle that I had pumped for Peyton but never used.

update

I have been gone and haven't followed this but I wanted to comment. I think it is great that you can see that this is a stage he is going through and not a rejection of you. 9 months is such a common time for nursing strikes, which so many parents take as self-weaning. Congratulations on persisting through this difficulty. Take it from someone who did the same at about 10 months. I thought we were done but I persisted and am still nursing my 2 1/2 yo son! :D

Hi everyone!!

I so appreciate all the help you've given us!!!

is doing *much* better!!! We're back to nursing around 4-5 times a day, on average!!! The biting is much less, as I've moved to nursing more on my right side than on my left (I'd heard alot of babies develop a preference as they near the toddler stage, so this must be it!)

He only struggles now for about a minute before settling down to nurse, but the DH commented that he struggles to get into the carseat, too..and the high chair, and the stroller, etc., etc., and I might have been taking that as a rejection of the breast, rather than just part of the stage, because if I persist (lovingly, of course...I sing to him and shush him while I'm getting him into position), then once I get the nipple in his mouth, he'll nurse!

I'm just soooo happy!! I didn't want him to wean yet and I was so afraid that was where we were headed!!

Thanks again!

Oh, !!!!!

I'm so glad to hear that!!!!!!

I was wondering if anyone out there had survived a trying older baby and then went on to toddler nurse!!!! My LLL leader said it could be done, but it wasn't very common (most toddler nursers are predominantly those who've been nursing with gusto for a long time)

You've given me such encouragement!!!! Thanks!

We have had a problem nursing relationship from the start. Nothing really serious but always something. He has always been a clamper, since birth. He also would never nurse to sleep. He bit me a lot during a two month period at 4 months that seemed like we would never make it through. He was getting occasional bottles that were interfering with our nursing relationship. He has always left a ring of top teeth marks on my nipple when he gets done nursing. No matter what position, ever since he got teeth at 3 1/2 months. We have gone through several periods where he would basically refuse to nurse for hours at a time. It hasn't been an easy time at all. The worst time was from about 10-14 months and I was sure it was over. That is when I joined this list and got a lot of help and encouragement for continuing on. Once or twice when we have been having difficulties I have taken either Fenugreek or More Milk Tincture to increase my supply which seemed to help with his frustration level. I only took them for about 2 weeks each time but it sure helped. If nothing else it helped me feel more relaxed and confident. I don't see us stopping nursing for a long time. Everytime I am nursing him or he talks about having " tea " I am so glad I persisted on. He is so healthy and rarely gets sick. He is growing and changing and so is our nursing relationship. Keep it up, it is all worth it!

Belinda,

That is so great! Actually lengthy nursing doesn't just go on in poor

countries. It is just that we " civilized " folks have thrown breastfeeding

out as our culture norm so that nursing for four years must be something

that third world countries do. All of us grew up only seeing extended

nursing in National Geographic. It is not at all surprising that your

husband would react that way. Cultural conditioning is very strong to

overcome.

Update

I asked a couple weeks ago about trying to start nursing my 2 1/2

year-old daughter again... Just thought I'd give an update on that.

was all for it, we discussed it and she was happy that she might be able to

drink " milk from mommy's breast " like (ds 5 mos). But when I

discussed the prospect with DH, we was vehemently opposed to the idea.

" She's drinking regular milk and eating food, " was the response I got. So

I've been trying to ease him into the idea... Showing him from different

websites the benefits, etc. (I mentioned that the average weaning age around

the world is 4.2 years, but he said that included 3rd world countries where

they are too poor to provide refrigeration for " real food " ... <sigh> and I

thought I had informed him so well!) Finally yesterday he admitted that

breastmilk does seem to have its benefits, and I could start feeding it to

her in a cup...

Works for me! Unfortunately, I had such a busy day yesterday that I

forgot to eat a couple times and so had a drastic reduction in my milk

supply today. I started on fenugreek and have been staying in bed most of

today with to build back up. No bottles or pacifiers for my little

guy! He has been acting hungry, and definitely doing his part to help

increase my supply!

In the meantime for I have several bottles in the freezer

until I can pump a lot more than the 3 ounces I got today. I'm planning on

replacing all of the cow's milk she currently gets with breastmilk. She had

four ounces today at breakfast, and exclaimed, " mommy, this is yummy! " I

hope to be able to get up to 12-16 ounces a day for her....

<sigh> and I

>thought I had informed him so well!)

I had a related story I had to share. I was so proud of dh intelligently

using phrases like " letdown " , and *acting* supportive. Then yesterday, after

considering my regular morning engorgement, he asks " isn't it going to hurt

when you stop breastfeeding " .

Apparently he was expecting me to stop cold turkey at 1yo (that magic time),

despite all the talks we've had about how I am reducing pumping during the

day and that is why he has fewer bottles, etc. He just didn't " get it " .

Sigh...
