Glad to have you on the list!! You can do it, you just need to get started

with it and it will get easier. If you have any questions, just ask, I am

sure someone will try their hardest to find the answer. This is a great bunch

Hi ,

Welcome to the list!!! So far, I have been having success with one draw back

but doing good on the diet.I started last Monday and as of today I have lost

8lbs. The diet makes you feel full and when you substitute sweets for Atkins

sweets you get used to it and don't hardly miss the other stuff. Besides

nobody ever said you couldn't have smidgen of the old stuff once you reach

your goal, just have to be very careful:)

Sue,

Thanks for the welcome. I've been on the Atkin's way of life for almost

a year now. My doctor suggested it because of my reactive hypoglycemia,

fluid retention, and difficulty keeping my weight in the normal range. I

have never felt better than I do now. I don't have much weight to lose, less

than 5 pounds, but I was a vegetarian, and this change has been difficult for

me. I need a lot of ideas, since meat and eggs aren't my favorite things.

Hi Sue and everyone! I live in northern nevada and have just bought the atkins

book and am reading it now. I joined this list so that I could learn as much as

possible so this way of eating can be successful for my honey and myself. We

run a real estate appraisal business out of our home. I enjoy nature, reading,

the internet, traveling (someday), I have my 18 year old stepson living with us

and between us have 7 kids (yes I did figure out what causes that :o) ) I am 45

pounds overweight (at least) and don't exercise (yet) and am sick of being out

of shape! Nice to meet everyone and look forward to getting to know you.

Sunshine - what a neat name!!!! I love it!!!!! My daughter's name is Avalon

and that's a bit out of the ordinary too. Sometimes she gets teased but most

people think it's pretty. I know what you mean about being sick on the way

you look and feel. That is exactly what finally got my butt in gear to do

something. For a long time I kept thinking about how I wanted to change. I

was really at a wits end. Before I started Atkins, I had tried shakes and

just watching my fat and calorie intake. Didn't work. I didn't lose any

weight on shakes and I felt like I was being deprived all the time on the

other. Finally, I thought I would give Atkins another try. (I had lost 25 lbs

last summer the first time I tried it, went off of it unfortunatly, tried it

again after my son was born and it didn't work for some reason probably

hormonal)Now, in which I started about 2 weeks ago, I am at it again only

this time, I have lost about 15lbs!!!

I am very determined to stick with it even during the lows and continue. I

know you will find what you need here. We are all very supportive on one

another.

Welcome to the list!!!

WElcome Terry,

You know, I drink diet coke and I have had a little peanut butter and that

didn't make me gain any significant amount to make me wanna start off on the

induction diet again. Going beyond med. purple, maybe some other can clarify

but I don't think you wanna do that??? YOu are LUCKY to be where you are. I

think you are really expecting the lbs to come off rapidly (that's a hard

thing to say too because they do come off more easily than a regular diet

plan) and I don't think it's supposed to work quite that way. From what you

have said, it sounds like you are losing weight, but not at the speed you

wish and I think you are being WAY TOO HARD ON YOURSELF. Give yourself a

break here!!!!! You are doing fine!!!!!! Relax and enjoy the ride. It's ok

if you don't lose 10lbs in 5 days. I think you are doing very well

personally. Welcome to the list, you will find a lot of support here. Again,

go easy on yourself!!!!!

Nita,

I understand that Dr. Atkins says all these thing...you are right. But,

what concerns me is that I haven't read where he mentions possible damage to

your kidneys if you stay in the darkest colors too long. My pharmacist gave

me some hints. He said if I had a fruity, sweet taste in my mouth that I had

too many ketones built up in my system and I should drink more water. I

notice I have this when I first wake up, so the first thing I do is drink

water (or Crystal Light or any other no carb drink.) That way you are

flushing some of the ketones out of your system.

I have also heard this theory from another list I am on. If you have too

many ketones your body will start burning them for fuel and not your body

fat. Now, I have not heard or read anything further on this, so I can not

verify it.

So, please everyone, just be very careful on this diet. I think it is the

greatest, but plenty of fluids are very important. Sue, I think you can back

me up on this. Isn't that what your nurse friend told you also?

Hello, I'm Becky and have been on Atkins since June 14 and as of today lost

20 pounds. My Mom (down 25 lbs in 3 mo's) introduced me to this WOE and it

is a God send. I thought I was eating " healthy " but was still overweight and

the pounds just wouldn't come off. I joined this list for support and new

ideas for recipes. I look forward to learning more!

I'm not doubting what other doctors or nurses have said, BUT, they tend to

disagree with most of this Atkins diet anyway, so I'm afraid if I'm going to

stay on this diet, I have to have complete belief in what Dr. Atkins says.

As he said on the Larry King show, he's been on this diet himself for

30-something years, and he looked pretty damn good to me. Much better than

the traditional doctors!

Actually Atkins talks about acidosis several times in the book. " Of course,

if you are in ketosis after prolonged starvation or because you are a

diabetic out of control, it has a different aspect. Then it indicates the

presence of acidosis - and that is a danger signal. Too many doctors have

come to equate the two situations, although they are as different as night

and day, and health and disease. There is no acidosis when ketosis occurs

as a normal concomitant of this diet. "

I've read this book several times over, and paid particular attention to the

parts about ketosis and acidosis, and my take is that when ketosis occurs

due to the reduction of carbohydrates taken in, he states over and over that

there is no acidosis occurring, and it would seem that this is regardless of

the strength of the ketosis as evidenced by the color change on the strip.

The quote I used yesterday pointed out that he felt the darker the purple

the better, because the darker color went along with less hunger.
