has gone through several periods of pulling hair - at times so

severely that she pulled it out. Her Perkins' staff came up with the

protocol of immediately taking her to the beauty salon for a VERY short

hairdo but made sure that it looked good, too. This has been a very

successful treatment each time it's had to be used.

hits her head when in pain - especially ear, althoough we've seen it

with jaw pain, too. This can get so bad that she'll bang her head on the

floor or wall. Think pain every time!

was born without the entire ear structure on the left side and just a

little piece on right side..no inner ear was seen..I don't think its an

infection..Maybe the lack of the actual ear could be the problem...but thank

Kim..she has a mickey button..She doesnt't mess with the actual button it's the

extension connector she grabs,,kicks..and tries to play with...I have tried

different things..as in letting her hold the plunger..giving her toys..etc..She

does it so fast sometimes the whole tube goes flying..It happens alot when i am

pouring the pedia sure in...I have everything ready..etc...She is quick

though...She has just recently found her feet and is amazed with them..:) I

guess we just have to be faster than she is...Thank you for your advice. I

appreciate it..Take care

I did find Dylan's obsessive tendencies very young, so it is possible that

she gets focused on the tube and cannot distract from it, rather than simply

being defiant. On the other hand they were certainly not severe enough to

require medication, only an understanding on my part that he could not

change the behavior, so I had to set up the environment accordingly.

With Em it just may be that she finds it all interesting and wants to play

with it, not knowing she could hurt herself. Again it is just finding the

trick that works for her in keeping her hands away. Does she still have a

g-tube or does she have a button? Dylan had his tube for over a year,

before we switched to the button. With the button there is far less to grab

hold of in routine play, although there is still tubing during bolus or drip

feeds.

That is why I always insist on a BARD button. They are almost impossible to

pull or come out, have no balloons to fill or mess with and offer much more in

the way of feeding tubs.

Bradley had the same problem with the eyes and I stil cannot get the glasses

to stay on but in school he will wear them for the 7 or so hours he is there

and that amount has seemed to have helped. The teachers worked very hard on his

keeping the glasses on and the hearing aides. His eye will stray at times but

is no worse and surgery has not been discussed.

Tonya,

It took me months to get Kennedy to wear her glasses constantly - she first

got them at 12 months. It was just like a light clicked on one day and she

decided to keep them on. Keep on with it, it'll come, especially when she

realizes they help her.

My daughter, , is a charger and needs to wear glasses. She has

strabismus (I think that is the term they use), farsighted, and she has eye

defects in her left eye (dermoid as well as a clouded cornea). Anyway, we

had the hardest time finding glasses since she is so small - we finally

found some over the internet. She is supposed to wear them all the time -

the dx hope that this will help straighten her eyes an.d if it doesn't then

they'll do surgery. For the life of me I cannot get her to wear them!! She

immediately wants to put them in her mouth. This has become a constant

battle - I have a 3 yr old so I can't sit with her all the time putting them

back on. I feel like we're not doing a good job. But I'm doing my best.

I've tried putting socks on her hands but she still gets them off.

Any advice? I'm afraid at her next appt he's gonna want to do surgery b/c

it hasn't gotten better. Does anyone know about the surgery? thanks

Tonya,

Are 's glasses on a strap to hold them to her head? Also, could you

possibly get Lenscrafters or Pearl Vision or a specialty shop to make her

prescription in a goggle-like glasses? You might want to check with a Surf Shop

or

some shop like that to see if there is a company that makes prescription

goggles.

Does any one else in the family wear glasses of any type? Maybe if your 3

year old could get a pair of sunglasses and take the dark lenses out and wear

them around , she might leave hers alone. Or get a pair of swimming

goggles for him to wear.

I started wearing glasses at 2 years old. Wishing you all the best.

Akiba,

I am so sorry to hear about Rob's Dad. Please tell him he is in my thoughts......

Rob's Dad passed last night. He had bone cancer so it was not a total surprise, the chemo kinda did him in, his liver shut down, he only had one kidney, and his heart just....stopped. Rob is taking it pretty well....right now. I KNOW he is hurting WAY more then he is letting on. Rob's Mom is a gem, too, when Rob said he'd come down as soon as he can, she said not to bother. Nice. I think THAT hurt him even more then his Dad passing...

Ohhh what a wonderful thing to know.

HUGS,

Challis

Re: (unknown)

Oh Akiba...both you and Rob surely are in my heart and

my thoughts right now. Wishing and hoping for peace

and a healing heart right now for Rob. My mom sounds

just like Rob's; she would have said the same thing. He

needs to know she is going through alot right now, and

will try and push others away in her pain--she probably

feels all alone right now; my mom tends to wallow in that

and tells people to leave her be when she is going through

a difficult time. big, soft, warm cuddly hugs for Rob!

always, kate
