Hi Bev,

Welcome to both you and Don to a fine group. I am sorry about Don's diagnosis,

but you are fortunate to have found this group. I was dx 3 1/2 years ago, at

age 51, but had symptoms for about 4-5 years before that. I am mildly affected,

can walk unassisted, but slowly, and with a good limp. I find that not

overdoing it, resting, and not getting to stressed work the best for me. I

don't take any prescriptions for PLS, so I feel I am very fortunate to be so

mildly affected yet, and progressing very slowly.

Blessings, and welcome.

Laurel

Hi I am writing this for my husband

he is 49 years old his name is Don and has been diagnost as having PLS

he is draging his right leg and is using a cane I am doing this so he

can talk to peole that have the same thing I think there is denial

and it is a life change as with all of you and the spouses friends

ect. I am hoping that he will write to you all I know I will

Thank you'Bev

I am doing biofeedback with Dr. Glazer and so far, I think it has really

helped lessen my bouts with flare-ups and general daily pain level. I think

it is definitely worth a try.

I have questions for you as a care-giver. My 20 year old child/young woman

will transition into adult services in another year. We're in the very

beginning stages of exploring the possibilities. Given your questions, can

you come up with ideas to share with future people who will be in her life?

She's at Perkins and will have a full file, I suppose. My family has also

taken notes over the years. Even so, this scares the daylights out of me. I

just don't know what new people need - especially those who aren't trained

in CHARGE or deafblind issues. I'd really appreciate your input - and I'll

help you any way I can.

Thanks.

Martha

Where does your client live? Is she in a group home, etc.?

hey chip

glad you had a good b day. wes said he wants to make you a

present. what day exactly is your B day? I know you celebrated

over a number of days but wondering if we had KayLeigh on your

B day. we had her on the 16th . she has jaundice and has to be

in this light thing. I think its harder then the charge stuff

because I held wesley all the time with all his stuff and I cant

hold her when she is suppose to be in the light.

hope you have a great year.

Dianne,

Oh yes, I have had those problems out of Zak far to may

times........... With the feedings, is she gravity fed or on a pump? We found

that if Zak

gets the bulk of his feeding on the pump, we wrap an ace bandage around his

stomach (not tight) and that keeps him from pulling out the feeding tube.

As for the behavior, Zak has serious SIB (self injurious behavior) and

he is on medication for it (several medications). The mixture we have him on

right now (4 medications) seem to lesson the aggression but nothing stops it

completely. If you want any suggestions of what I have used to keep Zak from

doing serious harm to himself, write me directly and I'll help all I can.

Dianne,

What type of button does she have? If it's a Bard you can use the

continuous feed tube even when using a syringes and gravity. It's a little

harder for her to knock out as it lays flat against the stomach.

As for meds, if there is any way to " not have to go on them " by all

means try it. But if not, take her to the neurologist and ask about SIB.

How is Em's vision, I don't recall.

Dylan runs his fingers through his hair on the right side all the time.

There is always discussion on if he is just stimming and if we should try to

stop it. My sense is that he does it when he is thinking and is part of how

he processes info. Yes it gets in the way sometimes, but I think trying to

stop it would be near impossible and would just be replaced by something

else.

We have not had the experience with the feeding tube.

Em's very near sighted and will be wearing glasses...She does run her fingers

through but then she starts to pull..She is actually taking hair out...At one

point she was hitting her head with her fist...She has somewhat stopped that and

more into the pulling..

Em is 14 mo. It is not likely that there is any behavior so serious that it

would require meds at this point. There are many CHARGE kids who have

behavioral symptoms as they get older, such as the self-injurious behavior

that Debra describes in Zak.

I did find Dylan's obsessive tendencies very young, so it is possible that

she gets focused on the tube and cannot distract from it, rather than simply

being defiant. On the other hand they were certainly not severe enough to

require medication, only an understanding on my part that he could not

change the behavior, so I had to set up the environment accordingly.

With Em it just may be that she finds it all interesting and wants to play

with it, not knowing she could hurt herself. Again it is just finding the

trick that works for her in keeping her hands away. Does she still have a

g-tube or does she have a button? Dylan had his tube for over a year,

before we switched to the button. With the button there is far less to grab

hold of in routine play, although there is still tubing during bolus or drip

feeds.

Has she been checked for an ear infection? Often times there can be a

behavior change in our kids instead of fever and crying that you might

typically see. It would be concerning to have her continue to pull her hair

out. Sorry no help. Kim L

has gone through several periods of pulling hair - at times so

severely that she pulled it out. Her Perkins' staff came up with the

protocol of immediately taking her to the beauty salon for a VERY short

hairdo but made sure that it looked good, too. This has been a very

successful treatment each time it's had to be used.

hits her head when in pain - especially ear, althoough we've seen it

with jaw pain, too. This can get so bad that she'll bang her head on the

floor or wall. Think pain every time!
