Hello and Welcome Aimee!! I'm so glad you joined us - You will find many wonderful people here!! You've done great so far with your weightloss!! I look forward to getting to know you!!

Good morning everyone! My name is Aimee, and I just joined your group last night. A little about myself: I'm 27 (going to be 28 this Saturday), married, and I don't have any children yet. I live in Ohio. I joined WW on July 2nd and have lost a little over 35 pounds so far. I'm hoping to make 50 pounds by Christmas, but if I don't, I'm not going to worry over it. The weight will still come off in January if I hit my personal goal or not. :) I look forward to getting to know everyone here, and thanks for letting me join your group. *hugs* Aimee

Welcome to our group Aimee. Congratulations on your weight loss so far. I just got to my goal a few weeks ago so now I am figuring out how to stay there!! WW is a wonderful program and this is a great support group.

Welcome Aimee,

Your doing great! This group is full of great support, and everyone is so kind. I have about 40lbs to go, i've only been OP program since 10/17 and i've lost 5lbs so far. I'm not putting a deadline on my goal, the last time i did that i got too ahead of myself and wound up gaining back 10lbs. But i am trying to keep a good perspective of my losses.

Negative for what?

I had what looked like a reddish rash with raised bumps that appeared on my

elbows, arms, knees, hands and another few places too. My doc did a biopsy

of one spot and it came back as positive for what is called " granuloma

annulare " . This is a benign condition, relatively rare, usually found in

children who may be diabetic. (I was 60+ when they appeared, smile)... My

doc offered to send me to a dermatologist but since, outside of looking ugly,

it didn't hurt or itch, I said forget it. Three years later...the rash has

faded from some parts but the bumps remain.

HI Rick,

I asked my Dr last time we saw him...(.btw, his a big believer in YMMV). He

said tests in med school expected Drs to answer, 1 unit=15 grams of carb, but

few patients actually gain control without tweaking their doses.

Rick, not only is carb to insulin ratio different for every person, it's

different at different times of the day...my ratio at breakfast and lunch is

something around 5.5 insulin to carb ratio; my ratio at dinner is around 11.

The best thing to do is eat and test and keep good notes. It also is helpful

to weigh out food portions so if you have a good result you can repeat it.

BTW, I think the idea of " sliding scale " insulin very inefficient. As Barb

mentiond, this attacks the problem after it has occurred. Better IMHO is to

take a short-acting insulin such as Humalog before meal and match to carbs,

whatever your ratio is. This way you avoid the problem instead of treating

it after it's happened.

Rick, not only is carb to insulin ratio different for every person, it's

different at different times of the day...my ratio at breakfast and lunch is

something around 5.5 insulin to carb ratio; my ratio at dinner is around 11.

if it is carbohydrates, especially the high glycemic ones, that spike blood

sugar (and it is), doesn't it make sense to lower carb intake and get energy

from eating more protein and fat?

Also infections will definitely raise the blood sugar - alot. Also insulin

dosing with a short acting insulin, like Humalog, before a meal will cover

the carbs eaten, so you get less of a spike. The sliding scale method

treats the spike after it has already occurred and potential damage done.

Not to mention if you are not testing at 1 hour and 2 hours after meals, you

have no idea how how he is spiking after eating.

Hi, Neil, welcome to the list, sorry you have to join but you'll get good

information here. Those numbers of 11-15 are way too high but you can get

them down pretty quickly if you lower the amount of carbs you eat. If you

cut out the " whites " -- breads and all products made from grain, including

pasta, rice, potatos (and all root veggies) in addition to fruits and juices,

and the usual sweet stuff, your BGs will go down to the extent that you

probably won't need as much insulin. It's a good idea to test frequently and

keep good notes of what you eat, how much, and how much insulin you're taking

in addition to testing before, one and two hours after eating. This will give

you good information.

I strongly suggest you get Dr. Bernstein's diabetes Solutions " by richard K.

Bernstein, M.D. It's one of the best all-over books on management of diabetes

and how to control it. Dr. Bernstein also has a website and the url is

http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/index.shtml

There's excerpts from his book online as well as lots of other good stuff.
