homes and our mortgage broker is checking on it for us.

the world is in dire need of middle of the road people who can help

temper the extremists on the sides of our issues. you do a great

service for animals by standing for the middle ground.

Some egg factories are moving away from battery cages for other

reasons as well. the more chickens, the closer they are caged, the

more preventative medicine they have to be given and the more risk of

the spread of avian illnesses. Hopefully we will see less and less of

such chicken farming with the increased education of every day people

from those like you who are keeping informed.

my cat is not a good hunter, but once and a while he does manage to

catch a mouse and he holds a grudge when i take it away. the mouse

always lives because he doesnt actually like to kill things, he just

catches them. i'm glad, i dont like seeing things killed. i always

let the mice go under the mulch pile.

that is the same reason why students began protesting in the 60s, no

one was taking notice of what was going on and they were trying to get

peoples attention.

whether or not they paid attention would also depend on what else they

had to report.

Bill Gates stepped down and with all the election hub-bub, i didnt

even hear a thing about it. I read 1 article on the internet adn was

shocked I hadn't heard about it. I finally heard it mentioned mostly

as an 'aside' on one news channel. it wasn't even big news compared

to the ratings the news can get by covering the election.

our problem here is mud & drainage. we can have great grass, but you

have to have a big enough pasture that you can rotate the animals or

they end up knee deep in mud during the rainy season.

an animal group just removed a bunch of horses from a lady a couple

days ago because she didn't have any where mud free in her small

pasture where the horses could be.

i was actually surprised they were able to take any action.

laurie

>

> Way to go, Janet. For a horse or cow to attract attention in

Mississippi as neclected, it has to down and near death. I watch

" Animal Cops Houston " and see seized horses in conditions that would

be generally called " pretty good shape " here. We have lots of grass,

but the soil is not very good and parasites, in this semitropical

climate, are rampant, so any animal turned out to exist on the typical

pasture, is probably not going to do well. Many fields that look

green really have very little real grass, and would probably not

support anything but goats, if that. I have tried to educate people

on this, but if it is an inconvenient truth, they ignore it. I can

only keep trying.

For instance you can find a dog on a property being starved and neglected in every way, and the property owner can say, "That is not my dog." and that is the end of that

,

In my opinion, this is why the laws need to be toughed and enforced. In many states there is no such thing as felony animal cruelty. I think these people, and yet people are doing massive amounts of time for possession of marijuana. I don't personally care if someone smokes a joint (as long as they are not in a profession which could cause a danger to people and testing for that should be the job of the company). I would much rather have my tax money spent to put people in prison who are responsible for cruelty to animals

I spent 14 years in Alabama and my experience with animal welfare down there was not good. Now, I have a friend who runs a rescue organization in the state of Misery (Missouri), which is by far the worst puppy mill state in the country, and I figure if that brave soul can do such incredible work there, then I can at least do what I can in North Carolina. I do what I can to support the HSUS and SPCA, but one of my New Years resolutions is to do a lot more for the animals in North Carolina because I believe that every cause should be fought on a local level.

Amen! A cruel person is cruel across the board. Any one capable of being cruel to an animal has the propensity to be cruel to anyone unable to speak up for or defend himself. Would you trust a baby or small child to someone who did not treat their pet well? Such a person is guided not by self imposed standards but by what they can get away with. They are a danger to anyone or anything they can victimize.

Laurie,

I was in Lowe's foods yesterday and their store brand eggs were on sale. I was delighted to see that the ones that had sold out were the cage free eggs, even though they were the more expensive ones!

Oliver (my cat) catches mice and moles and that is fine with me because keeping them down encourages the Copperheads to go elsewhere. He does not bother the birds because I got rid of the birdfeeders (also to get rid of the Copperheads) and only have hummingbird feeders, which he cannot get near. I figure that doing what we can to keep the snakes off the property is our mutual job.

y what they can get away with. They are a danger to anyone or anything they

I agree . I do not believe that anyone can be cruel to animals and only kind to humans - and that includes the research scientists who conduct these experiments that are supposed to be for the good of humanity.

An evil act just cannot be justified by need or circumstances to me. A person or a country has standards and integrity or it does not. Sorry for getting, maybe, a little too far off topic, but this refers not just to animal testing, but also to torturing a person for information. In my mind, when we do this, or it is done in our name, it changes who we are. This issue is the one thing that makes me saddest and drains away my hope for a better world.

How in fact, can we claim to be the leader of the free world and then exhibit standards we are supposed to condemn. We indeed lower ourselves when we resort to methods such as torture, and we have no right to condemn others who practice it when we do it ourselves. When Americans are tortured by our enemies, we need to remember that we put the stamp of approval on the practice.
