MGIMS alumni would be happy to know that Jyotsna's sister Divya got married

to Tarun Naik yesterday at Bombay. I am sure both Jyotsna and Alok; and

Namita(Jyotsna's sister 1989 batch) and Vikram must be pretty tired .

I also take Topamax for migrianes - I didn't get relief until I got to 200 mgs, but and this is a big BUT, it didn't do much for the "monthly" migriane - those were caused by a my neuro feels - a drastic drop in estrogen - and the Topamax can not stop them - so I still will have breakthrough migrianes from them - sometimes - I did try to wear an estrogen patch, and that helped 50% of the time, BUT it caused my monthly to become very irregular and I had horrible cramps for the most part - so it was a toss up as to what was worse - the mirgiane or more severe irregular periods with the patch - plus it didn't always work to stop them. The migraines during this time while on 200 mgs of Topamax aren't as bad as they were while not on Topamax but they do get through - sometimes. The migriane blockers - imitrex, maxalt, axert also never worked on the monthly type migrianes for me either - when I get these - I ususally just try to carry on best I can and then once home from work - it's a RX pain pill and bed and pray that I start menopause soon (I am 43 so I don't think that one will be answered soon).

Pretty cool your dog picks up on it!! Have you tried to take a migriane blocker when she alerts you? Does it work?

I have been on a preventative for 2 years, a seizure med that has worked wonders up until about 4 months ago, when they started up again.Changes... I am no longer taking my Zyrtec, so maybe I need to take that again, although I was taking it when the headaches started back. I stopped the zyrtec just recently, the headaches had already continued. My T4 is just barely in the normal range... would this have an effect on my headaches?I take a fairly low dosage of the seizure meds. I take 100 mgs Topamax nightly, the average dosage for migraine sufferers is 200 mgs, so I have the option of increasing that also.An interesting side note, I have an 8-month-old doberman that is *alerting* to my migraines approximately 20 to 30 minutes before they happen. She comes to me and paws at me and whines and licks me in the ear. When I didn't get the message the first two times she resorted to barking right in my face. I did a little research on seizure alert dogs... maybe she is sensing the migraines in the same manner she would sense a sezuire? Maybe these are similar in nature to seizures? The topamax HAS worked for me, for over 2 years, then it quits.

Could be my body adjusting, could be perimenopause (I am 44), I

always had migraines during my cycle also. But so far, none of the

migraines with aura yet... knock on wood!! I will try the increase

in Armour first, to increase my T4, and try to get rid of the

headaches that way. My T4 needs to move up anyway.

I do like the idea my pup is alerting. Last time she alerted, I took

some imitrex, and the headache was manageble... you know, no throwing

up <g>. I may have to get her trained and certified as a service dog

and take her with me everywhere so I can manage these headaches,

don't want to get back to where I was before the topamax.

Interesting about the aura. I have

migraines that have been managed wonderfully with Topamax! I have very rarely

ever had an aura with my migraines….wonder if there’s some kind of

link.

I hate the day that it quits working for

me. It has literally given me my life back in so many ways – I had

become a slave to those headaches! I am allergic to Vicodin, so I am pretty

much out of luck on the pain medicine train (according to most doctors in the

world). Not that with 3 kids (1 special needs) I really have the luxury of

popping pain pills and laying in bed – but some days, when all you can do

it throw up, a pain pill would be nice, if only for the psychological benefit!

was found somewhere that it can be a big source of thyroid hormone blockage.

Your T4 seems awfully low, but, then again, it may not be for YOU. What is

your Free T3 and how long ago were your tests done? I'm frankly beginning

to think that all the tests are worthless for some of us, when we've got all

this thyroid hormone resistance going on inside of us. Are you on

progesterone, by any chance. What period of your life are you in?

I don't get the aura, but I do get extreme nausea and blurred vision. My neice gets the aura. While the aura is always mentioned, what they don't tell you is that it is very rare. Most don't ever get it.

Also, 70% of the women who get migraines will stop getting them after menopause - Come on Menopause - I'm ready!!!

- was topamax one of the anti-seizure meds on that list? I don't remember seeing it as being one of them. Since I take it I looked for it and didn't see it mentioned as one. But with my faulty memory who knows, lol.

I take my Armour in the am and my topamax at night at least 12 hours between the two.

- was topamax one of the anti-seizure meds on that list? I don't remember seeing it as being one of them. Since I take it I looked for it and didn't see it mentioned as one. But with my faulty memory who knows, lol.

I take my Armour in the am and my topamax at night at least 12 hours between the two.

I tried to find something on topamax being a source of thyroid

interference, but couldn't. I will research it again. I did think

of that.

My gyno just suggests that I am peri-menopause, because of my age. I

take no medications. No birth control. My T4 is awfully low, it

dropped drastically when I switched from the dreaded synthroid to

armour, but the Endo doesn't want to add any T4. The gyno, on the

other hand, is willing to give me samples <wicked grin>

My most recent labs are from 4-16-04:

TSH .04 REF 0.04 - 5.50

T3, TOTAL 126 REF 60 - 181

T4, FREE .8 REF 0.8 - 1.8

T3, FREE 355 REF 230 - 420

So the T3 could probably go a tad higher, the T4 could stand to go to

the moon, and then things might be a bit better. The topamax is

still keeping the burger biggies with the aura away, and my pooch is

letting me know when to pop the appropriate blockers for the others,

but I would prefer not to have to do that. <g>

My aura is BEFORE the headache... lose most of my peripheral vision,

eventually return, and then... BAM! There is the headache. This

takes place over an approximate 30 minute time span. Best way to

describe is that if you look into a mirror, you can only see half of

your face at one time... and not real clear either. Of course, I

have been reassured that I am not at increased risk of stroke because

of these types of headaches... thanks for the reassurance!!
