Hi Kathy!Welcome! Exercise videos are such a great, versatile tool. I was at 196 when I started, and they are the primary reason that I've been able to keep exercising regularly since 2001. I'll be 49 this week, and I have a 22 year old son here at home. We have some things in common!

Anyhow, I'm down about 10 pounds and am now weighing in at (gulp) 191.5. Slow and steady. I'm not really dieting. Just trying to eat better food and move around more.

I'm enjoying what I have read here so far and hope to continue to be motivated to challenge myself to do more physically. Thanks for being here!

You're welcome!!

I started and quit exercising (and trying to lose weight) so many times I can't count. Four years exercising is a huge victory and it is finally a lifestyle. I've also maintained a 25 pound weight loss for almost 4 years too! You can do anything if you want it badly enough! :-)

Four years! That's what I aspire to.

You know, I've been to that Video Fitness website but never even looked at the forums or swap lists. I'll have to check that out.

Hi Elsie:

click on my name and profile. You'll see that I use trays and I have shelves in

my kitchen. Easy as pie. I sprout radish, broccoli, mung beans, alfalfa, clover

and cabbage sprouts. Best thing I ever did. I'm on youtube. Just go there and

type in eliz7212 and you'll see my sprouting videos.

Hi Elsie, go to .com and view the You Tube videos there. Also there

is a lot of great information on that site on how to sprout the many kinds of

seeds.

I've been doing this close to 20 years and have tried every method. When I had 5

kids living here I used the Freshlife machine, colanders and other methods. Now

that there is only two of us here now, I only use the EasySprout. The EasySprout

is the best and easiest for small batches.

Continue to ask questions and read this group mail. Lots of good advise.

This is what I use. Look at my photos under my profile. You'll see how lovely my

sprouts look.

These are the best trays (that is if you don't want to make your own). The

beauty of these is that they are stackable, and when you want to green them up,

just put them in indirect sunlight, and you're good to go by the end of the day.

I use a pole lamp and right now, I have 6 beauties getting nice and green on a

shelf in my kitchen.

MJ, where do you live? Is there a place in your home where you can keep the

sprouts between 70 and 75 degrees? Its hard to get things to grow indoors or out

when its too hot.

as a newbie, I might recommend starting sprouting in the fall when it gets

cooler, and stick w/ consuming the abundance of summer fruits and veggies out

there in the summer.....the summer heat is a tough time to have successsfully

sprout without mold issues...

Hi Daisy,

Welcome! I'm , married mom of a 12 year old boy & an 8 1/2 year old girl. I mostly stay home with them but lately I've been working a LOT. I work part-time as a Weight Watchers meetings leader.

You say you're not seeing "results" and are concerned about what you need to do to see them. In order to get anywhere, you need to know specifically where it is you want to be. So, what would define "results" for you? Do you want to lose a certain amount of pounds, lose inches, be able to do biceps curls with a certain weight, be able to complete a certain video workout, run a mile in a certain amount of time, etc.? You might be getting "somewhere" but aren't aware of it because you don't have anything to gauge your progress. Also, just making the decision to workout consistently and acting on it is HUGE progress!!!! You also say you've "slacked off" but maybe your body or life is needed more rest days? I normally like to workout 5-7 days per week but lately, due to kid and work demands I haven't done anything at all for the last week and a half and this summer I had to go down to 3-5 days in general (closer to 3) because of my schedule. I don't consider myself a slacker though. I am just adjusting my priorities. My health and physical fitness are huge priorities for me, but I know I'm not going to suffer terrible setbacks by slowing down either. I'll be able to pick things back up, probably, in the fall. My point is, don't be so hard on yourself! You're still doing WAY more than most Americans!!!

Last thing regarding sweating... 1st, sweating does not equal weight loss. You cannot sweat off fat, it isn't physically possible. If you lose weight the only thing you'd be losing is water and that will come back on through natural processes. The only way to get rid of fat is to create a calorie deficit by eating less and, preferably, moving more. 2nd, sweating is NOT an accurate measure of your efforts. For example, in the same exact room doing the same exact workout during the summer I will sweat WAY more than I will during the winter even if I'm putting less effort into my movements just because of the room temperature and humidity levels. Also, your body adapts to your workouts and becomes very efficient at using the movements so it burns less calories. That might also account for less sweat. If body doesn't have to work so hard to do the movements you're likely to not sweat as much. You might also be getting bored with it if you've done it a lot and perhaps you aren't working as hard as you did when you first started because you aren't as "into it" as you originally were. I know when I finish a workout dripping with sweat I do feel like I've worked hard but sometimes, especially during the winter, I don't sweat all that much and have to remind myself that I still worked REALLY hard because I just know I did, I can feel I did and that is much more important.

I hope all that helps! Please post more questions and concerns as you have them, someone will help you out. Please let us know about your workouts too and review videos you do, we'd love to hear about them! We're glad you're here!!

Hi, I'm Daisy.I joined a few days ago and am just now posting my intro,although I have been reading emails.I am a sahm of 2 girls(17 & 9) DH and I have been married for 21 yrs.I have been exercising off and on all these yrs but never with any real consistency till now. I made the decision to make exercise a part of my life. My goal is to make it a daily part of my life-or at least 5 x's a week!Anyways, I have been pretty consistent for the past 2-1/2 (almost 3) months now. I started off on the Gazelle Edge and moved on to weight lifting (light weights to start 1,2 & 3lb weights.) I've since moved up in weights,3,5, & 8lbs. I also do the Walk Away The pounds video. I do the 3 mile walk. I also do the kettlebell swing (great for the legs!!) but so far that's all I've managed to do. I have a video but I haven't done it yet. I just do the swing as that seems to be enough right now. All I have is an 8lb kettlebell and it was heavy at first and I couldn't execute the moves properly so I decided to wait until I was able to gain a little more muscle.So anyways, although I have been working steadily I don't feel I am making any progress. I'm hoping to gain some inspiration here and motivation to help keep me going.I have to admit though,when I first started I was doing some kind of exercise 5 days a week,but lately I've slacked off and am down to 3 days a week,and seem to be getting weaker!!!I have been deluding myself into believing 3 days is good enough but I am learning that isn't true for me. It's beginning to seem like I need to workout 5 days a week to make any kind of progress and I am also beginning to believe I need to work 3 x's as harder than anybody else to make any kind of gains!When I first began,I sweated a lot,but now, I glow but don't actually drip sweat like before!Has this happened to any of you and what did you do to feel like you got a good workout??I am trying different exercises to see if that will challenge me into sweating. LOL, who ever would have thought they'd ever meet somebody trying to make themselves sweat!!!I don't know if that's good or bad. I'm --divorced dad, just turned 41, sometimes known as the token male in

this predominantly-female Yahoo group. :-)

My fitness background is mainly in martial arts, so I do a lot of kickboxing

videos and weight videos too, even though I don't belong to a martial arts

school at the moment.

I hope you enjoy the group and enjoy making friends with the many great people

here.

Welcome to the group Daisy!!

Everyone has to work hard to make gains and the sad thing is the longer you

workout, the harder you have to work. But its worth it, once you get in the

right mindset, exercise is addictive. You find the things you like and you work

to better execute those things - not just because they are good for your body -

but because the movement alone feels really good.

Add some new DVDs to your collection whenever you start to get bored and don't

be afraid to challenge yourself!

Hi Joyce,Wow you are dealing with a lot but are wise to focus on your own

health. I am sure there are ways you can start making lasting changes in your

diet and lifestyle that won't be that stressful. We started sprouting in my

house with mung beans and lentils, and have than branched out to all sorts of

things we are trying.I know for cancer prevention broccolli sprouts are top

notch. I would recommend spending some time in one of the good raw food

communities online. I especially like Raw Freedom

sprout forum, has some very inspiring videos on youtube as well. If you search

youtube for eliz7212 ‎you will find them. Gill of (search for

) has excellent videos on sprouting that walk you through, step by

step of what to do. He uses different sprouters than what you have, but I don't

think that matters. Just get started and don't worry about making

mistakes. Keep asking questions too-there are folks out there who have been

I am really overwhelmed as to where to start with sprouting.

I have a sprouter that I bought 15+ years ago that looks something like this

I bought a couple of mixes to go with it at and used it a couple of times, then

just forgot about it.

I have read a couple of books about the benefits of sprouting and eating raw

foods and I want to get started, but don't know where to start.

I actually joined the group quite a while back, but a scare has made me face the

facts that I really need to get serious about my health.

A little about me:

I'm 46, am married, and have a daughter who is 24. I'm a flight attendant so

I'm gone from home around 3 days at a time (I usually get 16 days off a month,

yay). Money is very tight, so have to be careful what I buy. I live in

Indianapolis. I'm overweight, on blood pressure medicine, and have so many

allergies my dr wants me to start getting shots. My 42 year old sister has

cervical cancer and is going through chemo and radiation right now. I'm

positively TERRIFIED of what she is going through and want to prevent cancer in

my own body.

I'm a bad food addict and I'm trying to kick the habit. I don't like most

vegetables. I really try them, but I don't like the taste. Some of my

addictions are cheese, pizza, pasta, and chips. All bad for me, I know.

Where would you tell me to start???

I'm Melody, how are you doing today.

You sound like where my head was at 2 years ago. I had to do SOMETHIHG to take

control of my eating so I started sprouting.

Literally saved my life.

I just posted a comment on this thread and provided a link to one of my

sprouting videos on youtube. I'll put it here also.

Oh, I didn't know that flight attendants could be overweight. I thought they had

some kind of weight code or something like that.

And I'm so sorry to hear what your sister is dealing with.

You are correct in that changing your dietary habits will give you a better shot

at life.

I, myself, sprout LOTS of broccoli seeds because of their anti-cancer

properties. On my mother's side, EVERYONE had cancer in one form or another.

They all smoked which didn't help. But thankfully I do not take after my mother

who was 5 feet tall, blue eyes, red hair.

I am all my father's side. Tall, dark hair dark eyes, and on his side, no one

had cancer. Genetics play a role in what we get and there are triggers.

I don't want to provide any triggers. That's why I eat the way I eat.

I just went off insulin about 6 or 7 days ago.

I was only on one shot a day of Lantus and only a bit but I conferred with my

doctor and other experts that I knew and I decided to do it by diet alone.

I believe I made the right decision. Getting healthy is a lifetime, lifestyle

decision. It's not something you do for 3 months, lose weight and then you go

back to eating french fries and burgers.

Doesn't work that way. We have to clean out our bodies and keep it going.

Good bowel habits equal good gut, equals good immune system (it's in your gut by

the way)

Have you googled 'BENEFITS OF SPROUTING " .

I'll tell you something. Way back a long time ago when you dabbled in

sprouting, well they now know how HEALTHY it is to eat sprouts.

I find it the most interesting hobby I have ever gotten into.

Now you are away from your home alot of the time, right?

You can make your sprout, and bring them with you. Just ziplock them, tie them

to a small " cold keeper thing " , and transport them.

And if you are in one place for more than 5 days, bring a little tray and grow

them where you will be staying.

I would do this in a heartbeat because I don't know any other way to eat.

It would not be a challenge to me because my brain has been re-wired to put good

stuff in my body.

For example, if I were to go out with my friends and they all ordered scotch on

the rocks, I would get Spring Water and if anyone said to me " go ahead and have

a drink " , my answer would be " I don't drink and I'm not about to start " .

If everyone is having a glass of wine, I'd probably have one (but only because

it's heart healthy, not because I have to have that glass of wine.

Our brain makes us do the things we do , and eat the way we eat. I used to sit

in front of the tv at night with bags of chips, dips, diet soda, and then

twinkies and yodels

AND I'M A DIABETIC?? Can you imagine the damage I was doing to my body.

I've lost over 100 lbs. Didn't do this over night. The majority of my weight I

lost over 10 years ago, but the last 40 or 50, well, it took me a long long

time. But thankfully I had the patience, and when I discovered sprouting, well

I would putter around in my kitchen and build sprouting trays and find ways to

put sprouts into my everyday diet.

It was not as hard as one might think. And when you make a sprout salad, and

add your tomatoes, olives, celery, and whatever you put in a salad, add a splash

of lemon juice, and some extra virgin olive oil, well, it's a slice of heaven.

Well, at least to me.

Yeah, it's not pizza or ding dongs or red velvet cake!!

But!! it is not clogging my arteries, making me fat, giving me a heart attack,

giving me cancer.... if you get my drift.

So anything you want to learn about sprouting, just come to this message board.

All of us love to sprout and want to clean up our act.

For me, the fact that after 22 years on one type of diabetes medication or

another, well the fact that I can do it at my age (63 in two months), well

ANYBODY CAN.

It's all in the brain.

Thanks for posting the link Melody.I was having a heck of a time with youtube

and this morning.Your videos inspired me to get the sprout garden and

venture into more variety.I am greening my first tray of broccoli sprouts to

day!!!!!!Will get home tonight after a long day of office hours and enjoy my

sprouts with out guilt or worry and pure enjoyment. I don't think I could ever

crave junk food the way I do healthy stuff.I also lost about 100 lbs. I feel

better at age 48 than I did at age 20. Weighed over 200 lbs then. It takes time

and like Melody said--it is a lifestyle change. I don't drink either--but enjoy

Hello Joyce, welcome to our little corner of the world. The sprouter you have

goes by the name of Bioset. I personally don't like them. They often don't drain

well and then you will get a batch of smelly bad sprouts. However, you can use

it, but just make sure that it drains well. Also, those trays are only about an

inch and a half deep. I like my sprouts to grow a little taller than that. So,

after a while, you won't be able to stack the trays. Be advised that the roots

of your seedlings will grow into the drains blocking the water from going down

to the next level.

I used to do talks at garden clubs and such of sprouts and sprouting. I have

used or tried most of them that's out there. Four a small family I recommend the

EasySprout. A lot of places sell them. Sproutpeople.com has a good price on kits

with EasySprout in them.

If your seed is more than two years old, you should do a test to see if they are

still viable. Wet a paper towel. Place ten seeds on the towel and fold it over.

Put the towel in a plastic zip up bag and put it in a warm place. I use the top

rear of my refrigerator. In three or four days check for sprout activity. You

need to see at least 6 of the ten beginning to sprout. Less than that, your

seeds will go bad, smell bad and ruin the ones that do sprout.

Your sprouts need to be rinsed twice daily. If you are going to be gone, you'll

have to train your husband. Hopefully he will love eating them as much as you

will. It took me about five years to get my wife to decide that she liked them.

The turning point with her was a seed mix from Sprout People called French

Garden.

I am really overwhelmed as to where to start with sprouting.

I have a sprouter that I bought 15+ years ago that looks something like this

just forgot about it.

I have read a couple of books about the benefits of sprouting and eating raw

foods and I want to get started, but don't know where to start.

I actually joined the group quite a while back, but a scare has made me face the

facts that I really need to get serious about my health.

A little about me:

I'm 46, am married, and have a daughter who is 24. I'm a flight attendant so

I'm gone from home around 3 days at a time (I usually get 16 days off a month,

yay). Money is very tight, so have to be careful what I buy. I live in

Indianapolis. I'm overweight, on blood pressure medicine, and have so many

allergies my dr wants me to start getting shots. My 42 year old sister has

cervical cancer and is going through chemo and radiation right now. I'm

positively TERRIFIED of what she is going through and want to prevent cancer in

my own body.

I'm a bad food addict and I'm trying to kick the habit. I don't like most

vegetables. I really try them, but I don't like the taste. Some of my

addictions are cheese, pizza, pasta, and chips. All bad for me, I know.

Where would you tell me to start???

Here is what they look like. Simple as pie, they stack one on the other so if

you have limited space, THESE ARE GREAT.

Dear Aimee,

You already have many of the qualifications required to parent a child like this. I am happy that you got a diagnosis at a young age. I am also sad as I like you have two sons with Asperger's one more affected than the other. It's the realisation that they may improve with age, but that they will never get better.

You better get some fighting spirit ordered, because the education system in this country (uk) is a nightmare for providing for Asperger's, especially high functioning.

I wish you luck, Your little man will bring you equal measures of heartache and joy.

Hello,My six year old son was diagnosed with Asperger's about a week ago. He was diagnosed at age four with ADHD and ODD. We see our doctor again this Friday. It's possible that he may also have a mood disorder or seizures and more testing needs to be done.I am no stranger to autism. I have two nephews with autism and have worked as a teacher with many children on the spectrum. I guess I was in denial for a while that my son could have Asperger's. Although the diagnosis is somewhat of a relief... at least we know what is going on with him... I have felt pretty depressed the last few days. My hopes that he was just immature and that with time everything would be alright... are now gone. Realizing that he will/we will be dealing with this diagnosis forever is so hard. I just can't believe it... my son has autism. Makes my heart hurt.I and literally counting the days until we see the doctor again. I have about a million

questions. I am glad to be part of this group and I am sure that I will be looking to all of you for guidance.Amiee
