Guest guest
Katy...I think you are exactly right. Sometimes the written word can be seem harsh when it was not intended that way. I do feel bad as I have really been sitting on my hands here because I have felt that someone who is trying to do everyone a favor is getting raked over the coals. Not cool. >From: Katy <katyr64@...> >Reply- > >Subject: RE: LYE >Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2007 16:55:28 +0000 > >Wow, you guys, I'm feeling really bad about this. Guest guest
Tabatha, I am sorry you felt so put out by me. I will still buy the lye for the originally agreed upon price of $35 OR you are free to try to sell it at the gathering for the $44. It is still a good price and Im sure someone will take it off your hands. If that is not fine with you you can just pay be back in cash at the gathering. I appreciate you getting the MSDS sheets for folks. Look forward to meeting you at the gathering.. Im sure that we will all have a great time as usual. Guest guest
Hi Sherri - Where in Western NY are you? I am in Naples but work near Buffalo quite often so I get my lye from Riverside Chemical in North Tonowanda. Here's the website where you can get there phone # http://rivchem.com/ . I don't know if they have a minimum as I usually get 100 lbs. at a time. The bags are 50lbs. and I think it was about $1 a lb. If you live close enough and can go there to pick it up then it's well worth it. You will just need a copy of your NYS Sales Tax ID for their file. They take cash or check. I use both FO and EO and usually go a little lighter on EO but I use ..7oz. per lb. of FO for CP soap. For a 3lb. batch, I would use 2.1 oz. of FO so 1/2 oz. may have been too light. I know everyone is different and some go as light as .3 oz. per lb. (depending on the strength of the FO). Hope this helps. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. We have sunshine here. I was expecting pouring rain so this is a nice surprise! Katy Sherri Reehil-Welser wrote: > > I am located in Western NY and was wondering where most of you get your > lye. Guest guest
Hi Katy, I live by Canandaigua Lake so you aren't that far. Would you be open to possibly selling me 5lbs for now and I could come to where you are or meet you somewhere in Canandaigua or something like that if it is easier for you. If not that is OK, I just don't need 50 lbs at this point. Thanks for the info too on the FO as now I have a better idea of a starting point that may work better for what I am looking for. I love when the room is perfumed by beautiful fragrances and essential oils from the soaps! Have a wonderful day and the sunshine is a great bonus today as I thought it was going to rain today too! Guest guest
i have been getting mine from paw-made soap supplies and i think i just got a bunch from the soap dish. I think that is where i got mine. I liked that i didn't have to sign and send in wavers or anything nore did i have to order a lot. They do only allow you to purchase a small amount at a time like 2 or 3 lbs the most but for me that is ok as i do not like having a lot of that around he house. you are also asked to purchase some other items as well but with these companies there is always something else you need anyways. I have always had a hard time getting the right amount of scent in my soap as well. I never seem to add enough. it does kind of depend on the scent and the particular manufacturer as well. Some scents aren't as strong as others and some don't hold up in soap too well. i have been using like a tbs per pound of oils lately or something like that and it smells nice. but some are still a little weak. It also depends as if you do CP or HP. Cp requires more it seems where as with HP you add it after the cook and it holds the FO inbetter and you don't need as much. I too have been adding a bit of benzoin lately to try and hold the scent in a bit beter. > > I am located in Western NY and was wondering where most of you get your > lye. Guest guest
I use small quantities of lye and so don't order the big bags. The last few times I've gotten it from Salt City Soapworks (in Syracuse). She is (or was) a member of this group. Her pricing was fair and shipping was speedy. Looks like she is redoing her web site right now and the only supplies listed are Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxides - she did have lots of other supplies. www.BlueMountainBotanicals.com

Guest guest
Marquits, a grocery market, in New Berlin sells lye in one pound containers. Very convenient, as my recipe calls for three pounds of lye. I couldn't buy it in the grocery store in NJ. Used to buy Red Devil but they took it off the shelf. I pick up a pound or two every time I shop there. It's 100% lye and works great.
" , as I am in hopes it isn't bagged and then I have to mess with getting it into other containers. The soap dish sells 32 oz packages. Thanks! Guest guest
Also does anyone use sea salt in their CP soaps for a " spa type " bar as I was just wondering how much I would add and at what point in the process. I am thinking at the end when I superfatted it and added FO. Any suggestions or such would be great! Thanks! Guest guest
the lye from the soap dish comes the same as is does/did from red devil. ya know them little beads. I am unless what pelleted is soo.... but it is the same as it was in them red devil cans. It comes in plastic containers with a screw cap lid and each one also came sealed in a plastic bag. I have left my containers in the bag hoping any stray beads will be caught and stay in the bag. I know when i got mine I got 3 of those containers. im not sure if that was the limit or just what i bought. i think that was the limit at the time. 32 oz container. that sounds right. nice heavy duty plastic, screw on caps. nope not a mess at all. pawmade come in a bag which was then in a plastic tub which was then in another bag. again i kept it just as it came. I don't like dealing with messes either. > > > > I am located in Western NY and was wondering where most of you get > your > > lye.
