Hi All,

Please bear with me, its my first time doing this. I'd just like to know

is Lye easy to find in regular local stores? I'm interesed in making

homemade

Castile soap.

any help would be great!

:

Yes! Go to the household cleaning section and look at the drain cleaner

section and find Red Devil Lye. Before you buy, shake the can to be sure

its not all clumped up. If it is, your soap will not turnout right because

the absorption of water makes the lye weigh more than it should. It should

shake nice and loose as it is tiny beads of lye.

Hi,

Try grocery stores if you are looking for small amounts (red devil), or pool

supply stores if you want a good deal but usually have to buy 50 lb bags.

Good luck,

Rainbow Meadows will ship lye to you in small containers (to avoid the

hazmat hassle). One slight problem: their web site does not respond to some

browsers so, if you can't get into the product listing, call the 800 number

and they will fax you a list with pricing. They seemed like very nice

people. I have never bought from them so I can't speak personally.

I have never been able to find lye in a grocery store either. (I live in

Texas.) But.....I can find it in a HARDWARE store. Even a chain hardware

(ACE) carried it back in their " plumbing problems " section. They order it

for me by the case and call when it comes in. A mom & pop type of hardware

store would work with you and order the item----ask them to check their

availability list to see if it is something they CAN order.

Hope this helps someone!

There are chemical reactions that takes place when making soap, and after

it is cured, the lye is not harmful to the skin. On it's own, lye can burn

the skin and inhaling it could be harmful. Right, soapers? I don't

make soap, but that's my understanding, although maybe I have the terminology

incorrect.

Christy, you are entirely right on both burning and breathing. I have been

soaping for about 2 years and early last fall I was diagnosed with copd, put

on oxygen and all my friends told me I couldn't make soap because of the

fumes being harmful to my lungs. I waited (it seemed forever) for my

appointment with my lung specialist and he told me he had never heard of a

problem with the lye if caution was taken. If you stick your head into the

lye batch and breath deeply you will be in big trouble. He said with proper

ventilation and using a painters mask I should have no problem at all. My son

mixes my lye outside now. I have only made 2 batches and have had no problem.

I would probably have made more but I am terribly weak now. But, when I was

told by friends not to soap I thought my great love was taken away. I did the

REALLY HAPPY soapers dance after my first batch. Then low and behold, never

having a lye burn before I received a good one on my second batch. It was

from the liquid soap, right after I mixed the oils and the lye. Just wanted

to relate my experiences. Jacque

I was soooo glad to read your post (but not glad that you got a lye

burn...OUCH!). I was wondering how the soaping was going for you, glad that

you have found a way to keep doing the craft you love...take it easy and

don't overdue yourself! Here's a {{{BIG SOAPY HUG}}}!!! Love ya!

Hi Barb J.,

If you don't mind telling me what state you are in maybe I can help. I got some

from Amresco and they sent it U.P.S. but there were stipulations like how much,

how far and why I was using it. Depending on where you are there may be a

company near you where you can go pick it up. It just takes a little

investigating. I'd be happy to help.

Don't know what I'd do if I couldn't feed my soapmaking addiction!

Hi Barb.

Someone either on this list or another one was kind enough to send me the

URL of a mail order chemical company where I could get some ethyl alcohol. I

went to the web site and into the catalog. They have anything and everything

that a person could want for making soap or toiletries.

I got my alcohol as well as some polysorbate 20 plus a large bottle of

apricot oil. They are out of Burbank CA.

The URL for their site and catalog is: www.tri-esssciences.com

I ordered on line and paid with paypal. Got my order within 5 days.

Hope this helps you;

Blessings:

Raven

Lavender Lane in northern California has it for sale on their website. I

would think the shipping from there to Idaho may not be that bank-breaking.

How many lbs of lye are you looking for? I'm pretty sure I'll have the

amount you need. I get it locally for .60 a lb. If you want some contact

me off list.

Hi Guys,

If you want to me to bring you lye please email me ASAP with the amount

you want. I just bribed Bob into picking some more up for me since I'm

without a car right now.

Thanks,

a,

I get my 50 lb.. bags for .60 a lb. from a local chemical company near

Albany. I'm afraid to ship any because there's a hazmat fee involved for (I

think it's) anything above 10 lbs and I haven't a clue what kind of

packaging is required to ship. Try calling the chemical companies in your

area because if you can pick it up locally you'll save a bundle on shipping

and the hazmat fee.

Ok, I'm stumped. Where can I find lye - in quantity? I live in Watertown,

NY., and can only find it as Red Devil at Hannafords, and it is too

expensive! Does anyone have some for sale? Please help. Thank you!!!!

Glad to hear you found a local lye supplier! When I found a local

chemical company that had lye that I was so excited! Not having to buy

those costly little bottles of it anymore made me want to do a little dance

.... but I didn't! lol
