Guest guest
Yep I use it at room temp. I like to have some premixed and ready to roll. My oils are heated ohhh 120-130ish. This has always worked good for me. When you mix the two they become the same temps anyway. Shaye Lye Shaye, you mentioned mixing three containers of lye the other day. Do you use your lye at room temp.? That would certainly be a help. It takes so long for the solution to cool down and having it ready ahead of time sounds good to me. Guest guest
When you pre-mix your lye, what do you store it in? Is it pre-measured too? Just curious. Colleen Country Meadow Creations http://www.countrymeadowcreations.com
Guest guest
I store them in rubbermaid containers that have lids. I leave the spout open till its cool or else it builds pressure in the contaienr. then shut it down tight. I dont premeasure lye, no. See, im lazy cuz I dont like dragging EVERYthing out ever single time I want to make soap so I premeasure. And I dont always plan ahead enough to cool lye down all the time. When the notion strikes me, im usuealy good to go. If I stray from my same ole same ole, then I have to plan ahead. Shaye Re: Lye When you pre-mix your lye, what do you store it in? Guest guest
Ok.. so what water to lye ration do you use?... how far in advance is it ok to make it up? and any other little tidbits should we know.. this sounds most convenient... -- Re: Lye When you pre-mix your lye, what do you store it in? Guest guest
Well it works for whatever ratio you use. I typically double the weight of lye for my water but if I know I have a seizer then I use more water. I've used lyewater that was a couple months old, not being sure if it had lost its oomf but the soap still came out fine. If you do this in winter and store it in a cool place you can just place it in a bowl of warm water just to take the chill off before you use it. Yes this is very freeing . No longer a slave to matching temps. Re: Lye When you pre-mix your lye, what do you store it in? Is it pre-measured too? Just curious. Guest guest
Good tip, Shaye! I have premixed lye for many years. In addition to your tips, I have also discovered a few things that might help if you are going to try this. 1. The pre mix does not lose its strength if kept in a tightly closed container. I have never kept any past 6 months so I don't know how long it lasts past that. 2. You can pre mix large quantities in a spouted container and then weigh out just what you need, providing the lye/water ratio is the same for all batches. Because I have a basic recipe that I use and then tweak later, I could mix a huge l/w batch and weigh out as needed with no problems. I premixed basic oils as well, but that is another story. <<<<<<<<PLEASE NOTE>>>>>>>> Do not assume that since you use X oz. of water that you should take out X oz. of l/w mixture. That is false and will ruin the batch. Be sure that you take out X oz. of water PLUS the weight of your lye. For example, a small soap batch for me used 900 gr of water and 424 gr. of lye. I would draw off 1324 gr. of the mixture for my batch. Make sense? 3. I used a stoneware/pottery water jug (5 gallon) with a plastic spigot. This was labeled POISON on pieces of flourscent tape all over. Remember, our kids are adults and have been gone for quite a few years. I didn't have to worry about anyone mistaking this for a drink. 4. My mixture froze once and did not seeen to lose strength. I don't recommend it, but if it happens I wouldn't panic. I LOVED having lye mixed and ready to go when ever I was. My basic oils were also mixed ahead so I could literally whip up a batch in 1/2 and hour! That's not counting the prep time, but well worth it! HTH but sorry it's so long, Lizz
Guest guest
Ok... so the recipe i often use (the one that always works) is roughly 2 parts water to 1 part lye... so this is how i would mix it... and i could double, triple or whatever this if i wanted to make a bunch up ahead of time ... Am i right on this... then to use i would use 3 parts mixture (2 parts water, 1 part lye)... and lastly... does it separate or anything of that sort??... like do i need to stir it before pouring?.. Sorry for all the questions, but the reason i don't make much soap any more is due to lack of time for all the prep... Any help is good... Thanks Sam -- Re: Lye Good tip, Shaye! Guest guest
Sam thats right. I use the same ratio of water to lye too. It does not separate ( I even toss in some silk fibers). No need to stir but I do tend to swish the container around a bit (but you probably dont have to). I also premeasure the oils. Usualy I do 6 bathces at a time But you can do more if you have the containers. Spend a few hours measuring out several batches and then like Lizz said, you can literally make a batch of soap in half hour or less. Shaye Re: Lye Good tip, Shaye! Guest guest
What kind of lye? Do you mean the brand name? I honestly don't know! LOL I buy it in 50# bags from a chemical supplier. I repackage it when I buy and throw the bag away. May not even be the same brand every time. It's not Red Devil I know that much! LOL Here's the pricing: All of my lye comes in a plastic tub except for the 50# bag. That doesn't get opened. It is in bead-form. If I could find flakes, I sure would get them! Here's the pricing: 2# $3.00 10# $15.00 50# $65.00 You cannot order it from the webstore. You have to email me for it. I don't ship it. That's a whole bunch of paperwork and honestly, it's too much work! LOL Group members who place their order by July 8th will receive a 5% discount. No shipping fees! No delivery fees! I will need tax info. I will contact you privately for that. The catch? You have to mention that you are a CNY group member in the comments section. All orders have to be paid for before the gathering. I will bring everything with me to the gathering and just hand out bags/boxes when the time is right. ~Shyra A. Guest guest
Oh, Jeanine, that's really nice of you but I wouldn't ask you to do that. I usually get the big drums (100 lbs?) but figured I'd wait and see if anyone was doing a bulk thing at the gathering this year. I work as far out as Genesee County some days so I will probably just pick one of those afternoons to run out there. Thanks for the offer though! Have you bought lye from them recently? Has the price gone up at all? It's been a year since I've been out there. See you in a couple weeks! Katy Jeanine Van Voorhees wrote: > Katy how much lye do you need?
