HI Gail :)

Heehee I look at it this way, if it's NOT in the IEP then don't go near it

with a 10 foot pole lolol even potty training in the schools gets to be an

obsessive compulsive behavior with some teachers. I know of a kid who was

taken to the potty every 30 mins for 15 mins a time, now guess how much

academics he got in a days time????? (did this make sense lol)

Some things need to be left with the parents, and plans for anything should

be drawn up with the parents .......involved with planning decisions

Granny may be right about this one! I didn't have to buy crayons, etc. this

year

because Evan's teacher said she had them left over from last year because she

had purchased so much last year. She was given an anonymous monetary gift

last year (to be used just for her class) that allowed her to purchase all

kinds of stuff for her " D. D. " students. All we had to buy this year were

diaper wipes, paper towels, construction paper, and pull-ups if needed. Oh

and send something for them to lay on during nap time. The teacher also said

she probably won't have to have the parents buy hardly anything for her

supply lists for the next 5 years do the the large gift.

school vent already!

Hi group,

I guess I have no friends to vent this to. I just can't

think of any one that has a similar situation. I still

have no meeting scheduled nor is there a director of

services even hired yet! I get a big manilla envelope

in the mail today with the return address of the school

that they (the school district) moved the unit to. I do

not want Ted to go to this school until NEXT year

when he is actually in that grade that the school starts

at. It is from the special education teacher and in it is

a Kleenex, Band-Aid and a smushed and melted candy

kiss. There is a little note that says what everything

is for. puleeeze! It is called SURVIVING CHANGE!

It says the Kleenex (which really should be called tissue

as Kleenex is actually a brand name)okokok...is for

frustrating days to wipe dry our tears. the band aid

(again..sorry but it should be a bandage but anyway

if for Remember this is a period of change we're all going

through, and there are bound to be " ouches " along the

way. Yea..sorry not on my kids time!!!The chocolate

is for days when NOTHING BUT CHOCOLATE

will help! Are they kidding me? Is it me or does any

one else find this ridiculous? Then there are the forms...

oh, fill one out for a blanket okay for any and all field

trips and walks around the block. no way! Then there

is the school supply list...1 can of powdered drink mix.

I don't think so! Ted doesn't need that! 4 boxes of tissues,

toothbrush and toothpaste, hair brush or comb, washcloth

and hand towel. No paper or crayons or pencils or any thing

that is for school. I am just going nuts. sorry,

Gail

<< Yes, Granny education has changed that >>

And thank goodness it HAS. For many of the sp needs population, there WAS no

education, just " babysitting services " . Some of the more fortunate ones got

some " life skills. " VERY FEW got academics from school.

My expectations for the school is for them to meet the academic needs of my

children. ALL my children. I will teach them what I need to teach them as a

mother. I will make PBJ sandwiches, beds, and brush teeth with them. NOT

the school.

Gail, send the stuff back with a packet of happy face stickers. Tell them

THAT is YOUR survival kit for them, happy faces for a successful year. This

teacher IS insensitive and needs to be informed of that. Just like that

school that had been giving out those horrid awards all those years and it

was acceptable.

Ask for a list of academic supplies that are grade/Ted appropriate to be sent

to you. We are in a low income area, and parents ARE asked to provide a box

of tissues a piece. I send on every month for Maverick and whenever my kids

have colds I send one. We had to provide 2 dry erase markers and a sock for

an eraser. None of the kids are expected to bring in juice drinks or tooth

brushes.

granny>>

Hi Granny,

I usually love your practical and down to earth advice. My guess is

that all the other kids get a supply list with typical school materials

on it. I have parented 2 other children that went to school and this is

how it was.

Brushing after lunch just isn't anything that thrills me. Ted doesn't

have a cavity in his head and when I take him to the dentist, he has

little or no plaque. I'd be WAAAY more thrilled it they wouldn't call

me 3 times a day with ridiculous things to say! I am rather fussy about

our toothbrushes and just knowing them and their inadequacies I'd just

rather not have Ted working on hygiene DAILY as part of the curriculum

That is just so lame. They are just so lame and it make me furious that

just because Ted has Down syndrome that he is subjected to what THEY

want to do with him. I am his mother and I am only sending him to school

for some social situations that I cannot provide and academics. If the

majority

of other kids at school are not doing this, why does Ted have to do it???

I don't

want that for him. It may be fine for someone that wants that or needs

that but

I just don't!

<<Hi :)

For the 18 years my kids have been in schools, we have always had to

provide

their school supplies, even math and spelling workbooks (12 bucks a

piece).

The text books are provided by the schools.

Also if this was a wonderful world all would be brushing their teeth at

school, but it doesn't happen and I would not do anything that would make

Sara stand out as different. JMHO she rinses her mouth out after lunch

like

the other kids :)

Kathy mom to Sara 9...........Im betting the brushing of teeth is not for
