One addition,

I read that mg taurate is also well absorbed and has some anxiety

relieving effect.

I read that mg chelated and liquid magnesium are also well

absorbed. What do you think on that?

I am also thinking to try mg chloride as it might help me with low

stomach acidity.

Thanks.

Wow, Bob, thank you for all this info. I wasn't the person who requested

it, but I do have low magnesium (especially since the treatment from

another--unnamed--website), so I find this information very useful.

Hi Nil,

Mg-taurate is great , but expensive.

Looks like you would want sedation so - Mg-glycinate and taurine. Taurine

is very cheap.

Sorry, I'm going back a bit here. Does anyone use magnesium and taurine

before bed to induce sleep and if so does it work - and at what amounts?

Does anyone know of any evidence that the combination might induce or

help to promote level 4 non-rem?

Any info gratefully received. Rosie

Hi Rosie -

The only study on magnesium and slow wave sleep is here:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve & db=pubmed & dopt=Abstra\

ct & list_uids=12163983

It showed that it helped elderly people with slow wave sleep, but that

includes both stage 3 and 4 of sleep. If you really want stage 4

sleep, have you tried xyrem? Few drugs or supplements can really

affect stage 4 sleep (at least consistently).

Note: A disruption of stage 4 sleep doesn't occur with everyone with

fibromyalgia, nor is this problem specific to fibromyalgia.

Hi Mark,

Many thanks for this info, the report, though brief is very interesting.

I 'only' have ME, not FM, but do suspect that my level 4 sleep is

affected ( but don't have any positive proof of that). I haven't heard

of Xyrem but will look it up.

The annoying thing re the Magnesium is getting hold of a good source in

the UK. Presumably the effervescent variety mentioned in the study is

US product - I haven't noticed anything like that here, but being

effervescent it would presumably get into the blood stream quicker at

night than ordinary tablets.

Rosie.

A lot of people with that problem who have fibromyalgia, end up waking

up consistently waking up in the middle of the night at least once.

Without medication, I'll wake up at around 3:30 AM, guaranteed.

> I haven't heard of Xyrem but will look it up.

You probably won't with Xyrem, then. This is for people who

definitely have been established via sleep tests with certain

disturbed sleep patterns.

The magnesium they used was simply magnesium oxide, which is not the

best form, but is the cheapest. I don't know if the effervescent

pills really make it any more easily absorbed. Personally, I take

capsules rather than tables. Some people say that liquid forms work a

lot better for them.

IMHO, I don't think magnesium by itself is going to make a huge

difference. Everyone that I know of with fibromyalgia, uses a

combination of several supplements and/or meds to help their sleep.

Thanks for that. I did look up xyrem and didn't realize it was the

date-rape drug. Judging by my response to everything I've taken so far

which affects the brain, I think I'd better avoid it!

Hi Bonnie,

I started taking magnesium for my " Raynaud's Disease " and for constipation. I

take 600 mg. of Magnesium before breakfast and 600 before bed. It's best to take

it without food. I use the citrate and oxide forms with no problems. It has

helped both of these problems and it also has helped another problem that I

didn't even know that it would help:

For the last 20 yrs. or so when I went outside in the sun I would get an

intense itchy rash a couple hrs. later so bad that I felt like taking a brush

and scratchy it too death, I didn't do that but honey I sure felt like it. Over

the yrs. it has gotten so bad that I couldn't even go out to my driveway just to

say goodbye to someone without breaking out with this rash. I had to keep

sunscreen right by my door reminding to apply it even if I was just going out

for a couple of minutes. Talk about a pain in the neck. :-o But now since I

started using the magnesium I have very little problems with that rash. I'm

actually getting a little tan for the 1st time in my life this year because of

the itchy problem being so much better. There may be other things that magnesium

has helped me with, but these 3 are the ones that I can think of right now.

Try finding the magnesium book at the library. It mentions that most people are

deficient in magnesium and many problems are helped when the right amount is

added. It also talks about the importance of taking enough other vitamins and

minerals together so that you get the right balance.

Love, Liz

---

Hi Liz,

I take extra magnesium, but I have absolutely no idea what the recommended

dosages are. I take it (typically) in the citrate form -- somewhere I read that

that's the best way to get it into your body -- true????

I would love to know how magnesium has helped you, how much you take, and what

form you take. I'm afraid that it's one of those supplements that I read

something about, was extremely impressed, but then never did a lot more research

on.....

Thanks for any and all information!

Bonnie,

I take magnesium as a sup to go along with calcium and zinc... It's a good

combo and recommended... I take 750 mgs at night with the cal and zinc. { I

could and should probably up my dose} I've always been told to take it at

night, but for the life of me, right now I can't remember the reason... I've

also found out recently that mag with an 'ate' is the best way to take it...

So the citrate is good... And again, I can't remember why...LOL I had a

VERY long, hot and stressful day at the soup kitchen, so my brain is more fired

than usual}... I don't think I added anything to what Liz said, but I

thought I'd jump right in anyway :)

Love ya...

I take half in the morning, and half before bed (along with whatever is in my

morning multi-vitamin/mineral tablet) -- wonder why the evening

recommendation??? I am afraid to simply switch, since Mg has a laxative effect

-- think that if there is a good reason, then I better do it slowly.....

I've also been reading that zinc can help with memory, and my memory is pretty

bad...so maybe I ought to add it. How much Zn do you take? Does it help you with

memory (or did you never have a problem????).

I absolutely hate to take " too many " pills, so I try to customize what I do

take, so that there's only 5-8 tabs at any given time (I was once married to a

man who took so many vitamins that he actually bought the powdered stuff and

mixed it into water, and he would chug down handfuls [30-40] of them frequently

throughout the day -- and he's in really bad physical shape now, the extra

vitamins didn't help him (he's had a heart attack, several strokes, has impaired

speech, walks with a cane or a walker, memory loss, and a huge " belly " region --

and his color is really dark, imagine it's connected to blood problems -- and

he's my age, 61, with a strong genetic background -- I think he over-dosed

himself into trouble). I'm afraid that his excessive vitamin indulgence (at the

expense of feeding and clothing the kids!) got to be a really sore point with

me, and I find I still don't want to " overdo " it - lol!

you are right to not want to overdue the vitamins and supplements.

In the case of fat soluble vitamins you can actually poison yourself

with scary results. In the case of water soluble vitamins taking to

many is a waste of money your body can't hang on to it so it absorbs

what it needs and flushes the rest. Just another reason to do your

homework. Any vitamin you take find out wether it is fat or water

soluble and then speak with a professional wither it be your

physician, or herbalist. Or consult books, and find out what is

recommended for your age, weight, and physical needs. This is just

what I remember from a health class years ago. Hope it helps Mel

Just the opposite, milk of magnesia is used to make you go, a kind of flush out.

We are using magnesium oxide, from what I'm told this is the least likely to cause frequent BM's which is what we wanted.

Bio-magnesium (magnesium chloride fumarate. (I am using up some I had in). I have just bought magnesium malate, also from Biocare. Is there a better one.

He doesn't usually suffer these days with constipation - because he eats pound of carrots every day:)

Isn't it milk of magnesium that stops you going ?

About it helping immune system, I am sure it helps with gut bugs in my experience - not sure if that is just the liquid though??

Magnesium is meant to cause loose stools I thought. I find a few days of powdered citric acid in a glass of water can work wonders for constipation.

Dear Jane and Mnadi

Glad to see these posts becuase we are having a bit of constipation. Still going to the loo but not great amount and also poops a bit pale.. What could this be a sign of. We are low oxalate now too but nothing else has altered and even going LOD not a great change for . Is is a sign of yeast, pale stools?? If I increase Magnesium should I buy MgCl. Also what foods do people find help most with constipation. I thot of trying linseeds and prune juice any thots??

TIA Caroline

>>>Die off can according to Dana, we only had consitpation once and that was using Culturelle - spooky experience after years of squirts :)

So Mandi wanted to ask you with regards to the above did you think therefore that using the Culturelle was a good effect then or did you stop using it for this reason??

Interesting this cos I reintroduced s probiotics 2 weeks ago. Have started with Probio Gold because with all the problems with the excessive urination Dr Us office thot I should eliminate the likely causes (eg supplements) then go back to were we were when we saw her in March. So although ProBio Gold many think is crap (and I would have to agree since her first CDSA and OAT from March ) showed no good bacteria....!!!! We wanted to start again with this. Maybe it is having an effect this time ?!?!

The other two things for us we have done are 1) ditched the daily movicol - scary move but the excessive urination now GONE yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And much happier, now a little less so because something is going on but what is it????/

2) Since going LOD have let her have a little more fruit. She has only had bananas and pears for yonks. Had to ditch pearsas not low oxalate so have used last week watermelon. I do things for several days and this seemed fine. Also tried avocado again seemed ok. This week we have used some apple puree and also some mango puree we do our enzymes in these you see. Now LOD is scary because it has fruit which was a big no-no for yeast, phenols, salicylates and sugars .... However I thot, gotta embrace this fully if I'm going to try it.

Am I going too fast do you reckon or too much fruit?? All comments much welcomed.

Butt scratching might be yeast.

Hi Caroline :)

So Mandi wanted to ask you with regards to the above did you think therefore that using the Culturelle was a good effect then or did you stop using it for this reason??

>>>We stopped using it - poor Sam was so distressed. I have used it since coz it cost heaps, but only 1/2 cap every other day if I think somethings brewing. When I ran out I didn't replace.

Interesting this cos I reintroduced s probiotics 2 weeks ago. Maybe it is having an effect this time ?!?!

>>>Custom Probiotics CP1 and Kirkman Sacc B are my current fav's

The other two things for us we have done are 1) ditched the daily movicol - scary move but the excessive urination now GONE yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And much happier, now a little less so because something is going on but what is it????/

>>>I don't know :(

>>>Pull back a bit for a few days and see if it makes any difference, fingers crossed ot deosn;t coz its so nice to have your kid eat fruit............
