What a beautiful and touching message. Your words brought tears to my eyes.

You so obviously have the heart of a hero. You have inspired me to believe that

there is nothing we cannot overcome if we have faith and the heart to pull out

all the stops to recover when we have challenges.

I am grateful to you for your words. You will forever be special in my heart for

taking the time to share your experience with us.

I care deeply what happens to all of you and when I read your message I felt so

uplifted. There is nothing as wonderful as feeling that something you have

I am new to this group, but have been doing Life Lift for awhile now.

In December of 2004, I had 10.5 hours of emergency brain surgery and I

can not tell you how grateful I am for le and the Life Lift

program. If you don't know anything about brain surgery, let me give

you a brief synopsis. The very first that happens when you have *any*

kind of brain swelling is that you are given very large doses of

synthetic steroids. While I am thankful for the fact the steroids

works very quickly, it is doubly hard on my metabolism because I am

hypothyroid. About a week after I got home from the hospital, I

started back to do my Life Lift tapes and I truly believe the

exercises kept me from gaining a lot of that dreaded steroid weight.

My neurosurgeon was amazed by my complication free recovery and the

rate of my recovery. This program...this way of life has been a God

send for me.

Faith has an enourmous amount to do with facing any challenge...at

least for me. I will preface this by saying that I have recovered

fabulously and my long term prognosis is excellent, actually more than

excellent because I really am a walking miracle. And you might want to

sit down...

A synopsis: December 4th and culminating Dec 5th, I had the worst

headache of my life. For four years previous to the diagnosis, I had

migraines just about every day; if I did not have a severe headache

when I woke up, I would have one by the time I went to bed every

night. I went to four different neurologists and the last one told me

that people have migraines everyday and I needed to learn to deal with

the pain. But the headache I had that weekend was different; nothing I

did or took was able to lessen the intensity of the pain. Late in the

evening on December 5th, my best friend took me to the ER where I had

a CT Scan. December 5th, late in the evening, the ER Dr walks into my

room and say " We have a problem; you have a brain tumor " , just like

that, with the most flat monotone voice you can imagine. She also told

me that I was not going anywhere because I was probably getting ready

to have a seizure which would most likely kill me because my brain was

so swollen. Which definitely explained the horrible, severe headaches

I had been having for the last few years; hydrocephalus and early

brain herniation were two results of my brain tumor blocking an

outgoing CSF ventricle in my brain and both conditions can and did

cause severe headaches in my case. On Monday evening, after a day of

steroids and anti seizure meds, the second CT scan and an MRI revealed

that the tumor was the size of a tennis ball, directly behind my right

eye. Due to the large doses of steroids, the swelling in my brain had

dissipated enough for the tests to show exactly how big the thing was.

Two more days of steroids takes us to December 8th, when the brain

tumor was removed during 10.5 hours of brain surgery. The tumor was

very vascular but the Dr was able to get *ALL* of it. I did so well

after the surgery that he sent me home on Dec 12 2004; it was great

to come home from the hospital and sleep in own bed. Thanks to the

most amazing group of chosen family and friends, I have recovered in

record time. They have continually prayed for me and helped to heal me

and I do believe in that power of prayer and energy to change and

shift things and I know all the prayers and healing energy sent to me

has made all the difference in my speedy recovery. I feel incredibly

fortunate to be alive. My neurosurgeon and anyone else who sees these

tumors and surgeries everyday will tell you that I am a walking

miracle and that brain tumor should have killed me or made me a

vegetable or incapable of rational thought let alone performing well

at a very demanding, detail oriented job.

Dr Muradi is not sure why I was so " highly functioning " but I was and

no one ever suspected I had a brain tumor , let alone one that size.

And according to Muradi, I shoud not have been able to knit, sew,

visually recreate or use my brain in all the crafy ways I used it. So,

there you have it. As far as recurrance, there is a 1 to 3% chance of

recurrance at the original tumor site. I have had several post op

MRI's and there is no more brain tumor nor are there any other tumors

in there. I am tempted to say " they found nothing " :) but there is a

brain in there, and no more tumors. And I will never, ever have

another brain tumor that size because I will have follow up MRI's

every 18 months and then every three years and any other small tumors

would be treated with RFLP, radio waves and radiation zaps that take

20 minutes, are closed brain, and you go home the same afternoon. But

I am not going to have any more of those because it is just no

something I am interested in dealing with :)

So, my hair is growing on that side and if you don't know what you are

looking for, you really don't see the slight dent in the side of my

head. And my weight gain from the steroids was minimized due to twice

a day sessions of LL breaths. I read some of the messages for this

group today: what a wonderfully supportive, friendly place. I wish I

had found it sooner; I was looking at the website today, trying to

decide which tape to order next, I have I and II, I think. I have two

tapes. But anyway, I saw the link for this group and thought it would

be fun to be with like minded people. Happy to be here. A good night

Yes you are a walking miracle. Praise the lord for placing the right people

before you starting with your friend and the ED staff and the surgeons and

technologist who performed all your test.

Medical staff being properly trained and educated to get the correct diagnosis

and act on it

I truly am a walking miracle: my tumor was a tennis ball sized

meningioma, right PFC.

Not many people who do not experience the situation understand just

how hard medical personel work. You are all amazing. I was so scared

when I went to get my most recent MRI; I just don't any more tumor

left in there; and the woman who gave me my contrast said " I remember

you from the night you came in from emergency. When people come thru

with a less than optimal prognosis, I say a generic prayer. But with

you, with you I remember saying " Lord this woman has a long road ahead

of her, please be with her " and here you are. Mercy, what a miracle

that is. I see people come thru here everyday and I have seen some

stuff in those images, but I could not believe you were still upright

and walking " . I am truly blessed. The nurses in NICU are angels in so

many ways, the techs were amazing and my Dr is a talented and

compassionate man. My life is amazing. And that is not a " HAHA my life

is cooler than your " statement. It is an expression of the fact that I

am so truly blessed in this life of mine and so grateful to just be

here, let alone being able to do anything else :)

Hello Martha,

Once again I am just so happy for you.

Your gratitude is beautiful and I love seeing how much you appreciate all the

blessings you have been given. That is what makes you so special and wonderful.

When I was a child and my parents were told that I would be ill all my life and

never be able to live a normal life, I remember my Mom and Dad saying that they

were sure that we would be given a miracle. At one time the doctors told my

parents that I would probably not live to be an adult. They did not believe so

they nurtured me and taught me not to believe it either. I knew in my heart that

I could overcome all of it.

At 61 I am one of the healthiest women I know, so like you, I believe in

miracles and I believe that we can overcome huge obstacles. For those of us who

are blessed by such miracles I feel it is important that we never take it for

granted. I feel extremely grateful for each day that I wake up with energy and

good health. I feel grateful for each breath I am able to take. I can see that

you feel this way too. It is heartwarming.

I am so glad you are here with us and I am thrilled that you have become one of

my beloved LifeLifter's. Over the years I have been impressed with the quality

of people who come to LifeLift. You will find that this group is composed of

some of the most spectacular people on the planet. All of you seem to have such

generous hearts. You, Martha are a perfect addition to our group.

New guides came out long, long ago.

Fasting goal: 70-110

1 Hour after eating: Under 140

2 Hours after eating: Under 120.

If you feel OK when it's int he 80s, don't worry. You don't really need to worry

about treating a

'low' until you're in the 70-75 range. And really, everyone is different. If you

function well with

lower numbers - GOOD FOR YOU! Don't work to keep them higher. The lower your

numbers

consistently stay, the less chance for developing diabetic complications.

Great job getting in your exercise, --2.1 miles is fantastic!

And 1.7 pounds in a week is great :) Good for you!

As far as the blood sugar goes, can you call the clinic that went over

the diet with you and ask them what to do? Maybe it's as simple as

eating a small piece of fruit before exercising, but I don't know.

Let us know what happens.

I'm way behind so I don't know if mentioned this again or not.

The diabetes clinic nutritionists gave her a food plan to follow that she

was doing quite well on, and it was keeping her sugars stable and her weight

was slowly going down, especially with her exercising.

Then she went to her doctor, who she *thinks* told her to eat 400 calories a

day to speed up her weight loss. We all told her to call the doctor back and

verify what he said, or at least call the clinic dietician, but instead she

decided to drink Slim Fast for 2 meals a day. Many of us advised against it

with her diabetes, and kept telling her to call the doctor or return to the

clinic and get some kind of official word. She posted a few days ago that

she's going to do what she wants no matter what anyone says, and drink the

Slim Fast, and I assume she never called back the doctor nor made a new

clinic appointment to discuss her diet. She's only been drinking that stuff

for a few days, and now her sugars are unstable again.

Hey ,

Question: you said you like the taste of Slim Fast and that's great. I don't mind the taste of some of their bars (love the chocolate chip cookie dough ones), but the drinks I find chalky - just my opinion. Anyway, so you find that they satisfy you to have *just* the shake for breakfast and then lunch.... what about "snacks" are you having a fruit or veggies or something in between breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime? I know you are trying hard with your "sensible meal" for dinner then.... how many calories is this putting you at a day - generally speaking? Sapphyre's message about calories got me to thinking when I saw your message about the diabetes being under control.

Sue, My sugars aren't unstable. They are doing fine. I thought that one time it had gone too low, but several people on here told me that wasn't too low and that it was a good number. So I am doing fine. I also found a store brand of Slim Fast called Slim Rite. It has 46 Carbs in it. The diabetic clinic had told me to eat 45 to 60 per meal. I bought this Slim Rite yesterday and plan to start trying it out tomorrow. Don't know if it will taste as good as Slim Fast but we will see. It is also four dollars cheaper which helps me out financial a lot. If I have one of those at breakfast and lunch it will give me just the right amount of carbs that the clinic had suggested. Then for dinner I would have a normal dinner except of course watching how many carbs I eat. I would measure everything. I have had Slim Fast all this week and it has worked well for me. I love the drink and I am not hungry like I thought I would be. It takes the guess work out of things and that helps me out a lot. I hate having to plan meals and count stuff when I can drink something I know I like and it is already for me. No brainer there. Just thought I would share that with you. Like I said I am doing fine diabetes wise. I was just scared that one day when I thought the blood sugar was a bit too low, but people on here assured me that it was fine. from MO.

Where did you get these guidelines? Just curious. Wonder why the nurse at the clinic wouldn't know the new guidelines? Hi Bonnie, My blood sugars are fine now. I bet you are right though, if I would have had a piece of fruit that would have before exercising that day it would have done me good. I don't remember now what day that was. If I exercised or not. I know that Thursday I went walking with my mom and husband at the mall. It was great. Usually I have a hard time keeping up with my mom. Well, after awhile she was lagging behind me just trying to keep up with me, because I just kept going and going. She told me that she was really impressed. It wasn't too long ago that I couldn't walk but a few stores and then I would have to sit down I was in so much pain. Now I can out-walk my mom. That feels so good. from MO.

The link I provided in the posting " What they don't tell you about Diabetes "

will explain a

lot.

Many diabetics who push for what is termed " tight control " find that the

American

Diabetes Association's guidelines - which is what many doctors and diabetes

clinics still

use - to be outdated, outmoded, and simply not to work for them.

I, myself, took over 250 blood glucose readings in one month. By doing so, I

figured out

how carbs affected me at the time. Now that I was non-compliant for awhile and

have

likely burned out some beta-cells, I'm going to have to do it all over again :(

I found that my insulin resistance was the highest in the morning. One gram of

carbs

would raise my blood sugar 10 points! Can you IMAGINE if I followed the

guidelines they

gave me at the Clinic, pretty much the same as they gave you, to eat 45g of

carbs each

morning? I found myself having to take more and more medication and STILL not

getting

my numbers where I wanted - and no wonder!

Luckily I found that carbs during lunchtime have very little effect - raising me

1 for 1 - so,

so long as it's a good complex carb, I can eat pretty much whatever suits my

fancy. Dinner

it used to be a 1 to 2 ratio.

I found this out by testing 3 times for each meal (1 before, 1 at 1 hour after

and 1 at 2

hours after). I measured all my foods carefully and calculated how many carbs

were in

each meal. Then, I subtracted my begining reading from my 1 hour reading and

divided it

by the number of carbs in my meal.

I was also able, through some more testing and math, to figure out how many

units of

insulin it would take to cover each gram of carbs - a number which also varied

depending

on time of day.

Confusing, yes. But worth it if I get to keep my eyesight, all my toes, kidneys,

etc!

That's AWESOME!

I'm getting back on my feet, too. About a year ago I got hit by a car while out

on my bike.

Everything seemed fine at first but about a month later that bump proved to be

the final

straw where my back was concerned. On three occassions now I've ended up in so

much

pain I've wound up on a walker :(

I just came off one of those periods but today the BF and I got up and went to

the farmer's

markets and the big gourmet grocery store and we walked and walked. Today's the

first

day in a very long time that I've seen a blood sugar of 117!

I agree. I *only* like the chocolate for the drinks. Vanilla.... Strawberry....ewwww!! OK, that's only my opinion LOL!!

I think you are right, better go for the fruits n veggies for the snacks when you do have them so you are getting those in ;-)

I don't usually have a snack between breakfast and lunch, but a lot of times between lunch and dinner I have a snack and also around 8 pm I might have a snack then too, but not always.

For me, it depends on what and when I am eating. Sometimes, it feels like I am eating 6 times a day and others, lucky to hit 3 times....

I really don't know how many calories this puts me at in a day. I might start putting it in sparkpeople and see what that says. I just haven't counted the calories, but it might be something to look into.

I was just curious. I decided I am going to do the Curves 6-week *thing* again for my eating, which is basically similar to WW or 's eating so many calories/carbs/proteins, etc a day.... Week 1 is a jump start and eating 1200-1400 calories. Last time I did this, I felt like I was going to starve LOL, but today, doing good.... haven't been rooting around for the grub as much. Hmmmmm..... of course, I have been fairly inactive for the day (hey, it's a holiday!).... could change that tomorrow when I am back at work and Curves, etc

Good Morning

I'm too the end of my rope and hope someone in here may help. I know I

have CFIDS and Fibro. I have walked away from the medical community

alltogether. I'm severly allergic to all prescription drugs now. I

live in chronic pain not only from the Fibro and CF but I survived a

car accident 3 years ago.

It has all been a guessing game to keep me from being so suicidal and

why. All the doctors wanted to was prescribe more. What I did figure

out was not only use my Cpap but use magnesium 2xs a day. Without it I

get nuts, really nuts. I went off all meds 2 months ago after weaning

for weeks. I have been on the prescription wheel for a long time. I

live in Delaware and can't seem to find a doctor here that has a clue.

I seen one and after telling him NO DRUGS, he wrote more scripts. I

threw them out.

I take 400 mgs of Mag in the morning and 400 about 1pm but the

exhaustion hits me so hard by 2 I'm done. I got to lay down. Can

anyone help ??

Magnesium's co-factor is Vitamin B6. If you take each of your mag

doses with 100 mg of B6, you might get even better effect from it. B6

will help your muscle and nerve tissue begin to repair. Methyl B12 is

another important nutrient for this. Fortunately, neither is expensive.

I also had good results with CPAP and mag. But my fibro also

responded to two other things: getting my silent thyroid disorder

treated (this will involve another prescription drug -- possibly

Armour thyroid or cytomel), and discovering that I had a food allergy

to soy. A LOT of fibro patients have food sensitivities: there are

elimination diets all over the web that will guide you in identifying

possible culprits in your own diet. Wheat, eggs, nightshades

(tomatoes, potatoes, peppers) and soy are all common allergens that

can cause joint inflammation. I eat soy and just seize up for about

24-48 hours.

The odds that you have a messed-up thyroid are high -- and higher

since the car accident, especially if you had whiplash. Car accidents

are notorious fibro triggers, and whiplash damage to the thyroid is

one of the major reasons. If you can't find a doctor who will treat

silent thyroid (they're hard to find), a possible interim home

solution might be virgin coconut oil, which contains various EFAs

that support thyroid performance. The best stuff is at

www.tropicaltraditions.com.

We talk a lot about glutathione on this list, too. You might get a

small bottle of oral glutathione and start taking a bit each day. It

will help with inflammation, detox, and tissue healing; and many of

us have had much-improved energy from it. Another form of glutathione

is a whey powder called RenewPro. I put this and a fat spoonful of

coconut oil in my breakfast smoothie every morning.

There's a lot of stuff to try. Not all of it will work, of course,

but the key is to keep on keeping on. I'm in my third decade with

this monster, and have been just as miserable as you describe. And I

got better -- mostly by just trying everything that made sense, and

quite a few things that didn't.

Are you also taking vitamin B6, Magnesium's necessary cofactor?

When you read this website you will find that suicial thoughts can be an

indication of Mg deficiency. I take more than you do, by the way.
