Quick note for you...a runny nose is not always a sign of a cold or illness.

Runny noses are prevalent in babies who are teething. If she has no other

symptoms, she more than likely is just teething.

Hi,

a bit on aP http://home.sprynet.com/~noshots/prtusis.htm

http://pages.prodigy.com/gval/viera.htm

I didn't vaccinate my last two kids as I reckoned the vaccines were more

dangerous than the diseases, and I wasn't sure some of them like measles &

chickenpox weren't a necessary process for the immune.

(3yrs), Naomi Ruth (18mo), and Rebekah (due in Aug.). is high

does his doctor. Since we learned about the connection, neither child has

Hi Vicki, welcome to our list!

Many of us have sleeping issues with our kids. My now 11 yo daughter, ziv,

has been on 200mg zoloft for 1.5 years. She is doing very well ocd and

anxiety wise. She used to be wide awake hours after she needed to sleep so

we give her trasadone 1 hour before bed. This helps her with a good night

sleep.

My son, 17, tom, with severe ocd, etc. has been prescribed 300mg anafranil

and 100mg serzone. To help calm down at the end of his day he puts a few

drops of lavender oil on his pillow. He controls his breathing, thinks about

hte lavender and it relaxes his mind - which is very active.

He was on Risperadol for a year. It made him a zombie and he only took

..5mg! He was far too aggressive at school and his O's and C's were too

difficult for the teachers. The doc prescribed the risperadol to help Tom

calm down, which he did. He slept as often as he could.

I'm going to give you my 'warning'! It is extremely important that you

take care of yourself. As the main care giver, you need to be able to think

and act when demanded to do so. Please, find time for yourself. Try to find

time away from everyone, meeting friends, going for walk or reading a

novel... find something to distract you from your regular thoughts and give

you some time out!

take care, wendy in canada wb4@...

Hi Vicki,

Welcome to the list.

Our older son (17), Louis, was diagnosed at age 12. Zoloft is one of the medications that he takes. It helps with his OCD symptoms. He also takes Buspar, Depakote, and Wellbutrin.

If Louis has a problem with sleep we have permission from his psychiatrist to use an antihistamine, (diphenhydramine HCI), to help him go to sleep; however, we rarely have to do so.

's doctor might be willing to let you give most of his Zoloft early in the day and that might also have a positive effect on his ability to sleep.

Again, welcome and take care.

Louis

Hi! My name is Vicki and I am the mom of 2 boys, ages 8 and 2. My oldestson, , is the reason I am joining this list. As most people who workwith him say, is a very complex child. He was born extremelypremature, 25 wks gestation, with resulting developmental delays and hasbeen labeled either PDD-NOS (pervasive developmental delay, not otherwisespecified) or high-functioning autism, depends on which professional you aretalking too. His current neurologist seems to feel that a lot of hisbehaviors are OCD. The neuro seems to feel that his going off into his ownlittle world, blank stares, limited range of conversation, inattention, allhave to do with compulsive thought processes. He said that when goesinto these thought processes (video games, Pokemon) he can't reconnect withwhat is going on around him until his thought process has come to an end.Since he has a wonderful imagination he can be "gone" for awhile : ). He mayalso have Tourette's, not sure about that one yet. is currently onZoloft and we just recently upped him to 100 mg.. The neuro thinks once heis at this level for a few weeks he should stabilize. I certainly hope so.The Zoloft has already done wonders for his anxiety levels, which were skyhigh, and there are a few subjects that I don't have to talk about all ofthe time anymore, yeah! The only problem is that we maybe dealing withinsomnia. Except for a 1 1/2 years when we he was on tegretol for suspectedseizures, he has never slept well. So it is kind of hard to tell if it justa return of his old sleep patterns(weaned him off of tegretol in March) orif this is actually from the Zoloft. Has anyone else experienced insomniafrom meds? The neuro said we could either change meds or add clonipin (sp?).After reading some of the post today I feel that I am in the right place toget info and support for some of the issues we are experiencing. Welcome to the list, Vicki. I, too, am the parent of a child with PDD-NOS.

Often children on the autism spectrum have OCD. It is very, very common. My

son takes Celexa and Risperdal. He was never a good sleeper, although on his

current regimen is sleeping quite well. If you think the medication might be

adding to his insomnia, try giving it in the morning. Other meds can be added

to aid in sleep, but I think I would try adjusting the time of the dose first

and see if that helps.

HI Vicki:

Welcome to the list and thanks for telling us about your son .

As you know insomnia can be caused by a variety of things. My son, Steve,

now 13, has suffered from insomnia from obsessions swarming around in his

head ceaselessly, from behavioral side effects from SSRIs, and from worries

associated with his MDD (major depressive disorder). We treated the BSEs

from his SSRI with Benadryl and this helped him. The OCD was treated best

with exposure and response prevention (E & RP), the best form of CBT for OCD.

His depression is best treated with anti-depressants.

Sorting out what is causing a specific symptom can take a lot of time and

observation. You might need to consider taking the Zoloft up to at least

150 mg for a couple of months or longer to see if will respond with

a lessening of OCD symptoms. There is a helpful article on the OCF web

site (http://www.ocfoundation.org) regarding medication for children with

OCD.

Another thing to consider is changing the time you give his

medication. If it is keeping him awake he might want to take it in the

morning instead of at night.

BSEs including insomnia from meds are often a good sign that the medication

will eventually be effective against OCD. It is a matter of hanging in

there until their body gets accustomed to the medication and these side

effects diminish. Another tactic you might want to try is dropping back to

a lower dosage and then increasing quite slowly. Some of the SSRIS

(Prozac, Celexa and Paxil) are available in liquid form and this makes slow

titration very feasible.

You need to check any med changes with 's doc. I am not a doc just

another OCD mom who has learned through trial and error. Good luck, take

care, aloha, Kathy (H)

Hi Vicki, I meant to tag this onto my last post: Zoloft can be activating

in some children, it is in mine. She takes her dose (125mg) in the morning

after breakfast to minimize its effect on her relaxing and falling asleep.

In addition her p-doc suggested Benedryl to help with sleep, and it did help

although I began to wonder if it was making her tics worse. She also takes

a small dose of Risperdol and this makes her sleepy, so this side-effect is

actually helpful at bedtime :-)

Hi! Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and the advise on insomnia.

is already taking his Zoloft in the morning, so that's not the cause.

Actually, since I posted he has been having an easier time getting to sleep.

We upped his dosage to 100 mgs about 2 1/2 weeks ago and maybe he is

starting to adjust. Also thanks to everyone who mentioned about OCD needing

a higher dose than depression. I had been concerned that the dosage was too

high because my brother, a big guy, was on 150 mgs., and they wanted to put

my skinny little kid on a dose almost as high. Boy, won't the neurologist be

surprised with my change of heart : ).

Hi Karyn,

I have a 10 year old, . He's Down Syndrome, Autistic, ADHD and

Oppositional Defiant disorder. Actually, since we started the gluten free diet,

I would almost venture to say we could drop the last 2 (now he's like a typical

8 year old as far as the defiance goes, still doesn't recognize authority

figures, though). He's improved dramatically over the last year and a half

since the diagnosis of autism. I live in Hawaii, DH is active duty Navy. We

retire in about 7 months, back to the St. Louis area (and I will be so glad -

it's rough with no family around). I just had a friend offer respite for every

other Friday - we get reimbursed for up to $100 a month at a minimum of

$5.15/hour, max of $10/hour. I know what it's like needing respite. I also

have a 13.5 month old, . He's typically developing so far, just a bundle

of energy.

I think you'll find this list great. I get so busy sometimes that I have to hit

the delete key more than I'd like, but they're a great bunch of people. It was

so nice to find other children like . I told my son's psychiatrist when

asked if I had a support group, that this was the only one I really needed.

Welcome aboard.
