I found this information on a blog:

Everyone,

I'm a nurse practitioner who has been researching whether or not I want to

prescribe HCG. I've been looking and benefits and risks, both objectively from

the literature and subjectively from speaking with patients and reading sites

such as this.

I thought I'd offer some reassurance for those of you who are experiencing hair

loss. I believe that the timing of the hair loss in relation to the " second

round " of HCG is coincidence. It seems much more likely that the hair loss is

secondary to any rapid weight loss program, not just the HCG diet. You see, when

the body senses " starvation " , it automatically starts shutting down any body

function that it thinks is not absolutely necessary. Hair growth is, yes you

guessed it, not considered to be vital to survival and is the first to go. The

body " shunts " nutrients away from the hair follicles and towards all vital

organs.

Normally, hair is in a constant cycle of growth and death. Hair starts to grow

from the hair follcle and will actively grow for somewhere between 6 months to 2

years, but then will spontaneously " die. " This is perfectly normal and our hair

does it every single day. After death of the hair strand, it will stay in tact

for another several weeks, before shedding. The shedding is painless. If you

take a look at the " root " of the hair follicle which has been shed, there is not

a healthy and bulbous root, instead it is just looks like the hair stand was cut

at the end.

This process is ongoing and a certain percentage of anyone's hair is always in

the shedding stage. What happens with rapid weight loss is that all the hair's

follicles are shifted into the shedding stage simultaneously. This is why

handfuls of hair are on your pillow in the morning, in your hairbrush, in your

hands after washing your hair, and all over your floor when blowdrying your

hair. This loss goes on for several weeks and there is nothing you can do to

stop it because the hair follicle has already entered into it's " dormant " stage

and has started shedding.

If I may, I'd like to spend a moment addressing the psychological effect of hair

loss, from both a professional and personal view. Six years ago, I experienced

this myself, after being on the South Beach Diet. The diet itself was great, but

because I lost over 20 lbs in about 5 weeks (which is considered rapid weight

loss), but I started losing my hair about 6-8 weeks later. The loss was

devastating and, yes, the loss was severe. I wore a wig for 4 months and

extensions for the next 2 years. I would avoid brushing or washing my hair

because the amount of hair loss was increased during this time and was

psychologically traumatic. I saw every healthcare provider friend of mine I

could, each from various specialties. I had thousands of dollars of labwork

drawn, but everything was normal. I tried Rogaine also, but quit using it after

about a week because I noticed on the box that it said the use of Rogaine could

make hair loss worse in the initial treatment phase. I simply did not have any

reserve of hair left to withstand the initial treatment phase.

So, what does this mean for you? The BAD news is that your hair will thin

because many of the hair follicles have been shifted into the shedding stage at

the same time. The GOOD news is that it comes back. After about 2-3 months, you

will start to notice that the hair will start to regrow. It takes a few years

for the hair to completely renormalize where you're back to normal shedding, BUT

IT DOES COME BACK.

I hope this is helpful.

Excellent!!!Thank you so much. I hope it stops soon. It is really depressing to see my pretty hair falling out day after day in clumps. And it takes so long to grow back. : ( Appreciate the detailed info. I only did one round but figured it was from my body having to deal with other more important things. My body obviously doesn't get vanity! HA HA

Hi ,I'm no expert on this but did suffer major hair loss - lost nearly all my hair in a three week period.Have you had your serum level and saturation checked re iron?     Apparently this is a big factor in hair loss and is more important than ferritin levels.

Have you had your antibodies checked for Hashimoto's?     Another possibility. Also, I think giving up gluten helped with my hair.    It took three years before my hair really started growing back again and at that stage I didn't realise I had thyroid issues (because drs told me my thyroid was fine) and giving up the gluten was the only thing I'd done at that stage.     However, my hair has improved further since starting iodine and companion nutrients, and T3 only.

My TSH, T4 and T3 were always within range but I did have hashimoto's, a very high Reverse T3 and adrenal fatigue, all factors in hair loss.     I also had very low iodine levels.     I don't know about the accuracy of the iodine patch test - I had a urine test.    My iron was within range, but according to the NTH Thyroid group, still way too low.

Hi,

this is my first post. I am having a major problem with hair loss. Regular doctors and testing show nothing. I've consulted a naturopath doctor now and have to run FREE T3, thyroid antibodies, ferritin, B12, folate, and a lyme panel, gluten test(stool). Saliva hormone testing also.

My hair has become really thin now and it is really bothering me. I did an iodine patch test today, is this an accurate way to tell if iodine deficient?

Thanks,

I was having hair loss due to a physical trauma, lost almost all my hair over a

short period of time. Within 3 days of starting iodoral just 12.5mg a day, hair

loss stopped and my hair started growing back (which itched like crazy but I

knew why it was itching -- I loved it!!!)

That was in August and I only took 12.5mg a day for a couple of months till I

found this group. I am now up to 60mgs a day of Lugol's (from the ebay seller)

and I feel great. My hair is all back -- that happened relatively quickly) and I

credit discovery of iodine and this group with my path to good health.

I have never done any tests. I don't have insurance and am quite broke. I am my

own test tube, lol! All the tests are completely confusing to me and I can't

keep them all straight, anyway.

Thank you, everyone.

Thank you both for the reply, I really appreciate it. Just wondering how much

iodine is considered safe to start. I did buy a low dose last year and took one

per day, 225 mcgs, I believe.

225 mcg is hardly worth it. You should consider 12.5 mgs minimum. Many of us started at 50 mgs. Some take up to 300 mgs / day for serious health issues like cancer. I have taken up to 125 mgs.

You need to take both the iodine saturation test and the bromide toxicity test from Hakalaresearch.com .Once you get the results, call them and ask them to explain them to you because they are notself explanatory. Both cost about $130.AliOn Feb 14, 2011, at 4:24 AM, sally_ooh wrote:I was having hair loss due to a physical trauma, lost almost all my hair over a short period of time. I will try to find 12.5 mgs so I can start that up. I did take selenium for a

long time and have a son on the spectrum who is hypothryoid and probably needs

iodine as well. I hope this helps just stop the hair loss.

NOTHING stops it, it's a thing we cannot prevent or control.  People will tell you to increase protein, take biotin, use special shampoo.  It does not work.  You just wait it out.Biotin does not stop hair loss but it does encourage regrowth.

In last month's issue of OH magazine, the doctor said it would come back after your weight has stabilized. The OH doctor also suggested a supplement and when I mentioned that to a support group member, they said it would make hair grow all over your body in places where you did not want it. I will try and find the mag and let you know what that supplement was.

I am a bit distressed at my hair loss which started at 7 months. Thank goodness I started with thick hair. Now its wispy and real thin. It bothers me a lot. My doctor also said it would come back after my body got used to the surgery as hair loss often happens with any surgery including WLS.

I will look for the magazine.

Hi ,

I know you didn't ask for all this information, but the first part has to do

with Hair Loss and I thought I would just send everything to you. I hope it

helps.

Sometimes there are things that you may think you are the only one that this is

happening to. So I thought I would write about a few things that happened to me

along my journey of losing 105 pounds. My first shock was that about 2 months

after having sleeve surgery I notice that when I got out of the shower I would

find quite a bit of my hair in the drain screen. I thought to myself I already

have thin hair what am I going to do if I keep losing more hair? Well, I did

and it was difficult to try to spread my already thin hair all over my head. So

I started asked question to people on this board. And guess what there were a

lot of people who had lost some of their hair after surgery—not that it made me

feel a whole lot better, but I wasn't alone. I learned that this is pretty

normal to loose hair with rapid weight loss or some type of surgery. Then my

next question was will it grow back?????—they all assured me it would, but when

you have thin hair you don't really don't like the bald spots on your head. So,

my answer was to get 2 really cute wigs close to my own hair color. Hardly

anyone knew I had a wig, because it was close to my own hair style. Lots of

people on this site had all kinds of theories about how to stop the hair loss

and what to do. For me I found that Nioxin Shampoo and Cream rinse worked well.

Most good hair salons sell this shampoo or you can order in on line too. I felt

I had a much healthier scalp after using it. I am not saying it stopped my hair

loss. I am just saying I felt it gave me a healthy scalp for my hair to return.

I also take the supplement Biotin. You can find it with the Vitamins and I

still take it. It helps with hair and nails. Both of which I need. I don't

think there is any cure for hair loss, but just time. My hair stopped falling

about 6 months after the surgery and then I noticed it started coming back in.

For me; my hair had fully returned about a year from the surgery. So I wore my

wigs for quite awhile—about 6 months. The most unusual part of my hair coming

back in was that it was now very curly—and I had pencil straight hair before. I

HATED this curly hair, and I had to learn to deal with it. I am about 19 months

from surgery and finally my hair isn't so curly and it has a lot of nice body to

it and I enjoy what I have because it is much easier to manage. It feels thicker

now too. So don't panic or get scared if your hair falls out, this is normal.

Not everyone will lose hair, but some of us have.

My next challenge was constipation. When you eat protein you tend to have

constipation. I tried different products for this and the one I have found that

works best for me is Miralax. I buy the store band at Costco because it cost

less. It works really well for me, and I just mix it in with my Protein drink

every morning and I have NO problems with constipation anymore. Walking also

helps with constipation. I was embarrassed to ask people on the board about

constipation. I thought I was the only one who was having this issue then I

found out a lot of people were having these issues. I also eat Almonds and that

seems to help me too.

We have talked a little or a lot about " slimming or flemming " In case you missed

it, when you first start eating regular food you have to re-learn how to eat

again and chew. With you new stomach you will need to take small tiny bites and

chew until the food in your mouth is almost liquid like. This is nothing like

what you had been doing your entire life. In the past you eat and talk and put

big bite in your mouth along with a few chews and then swallowing—this will NO

LONGER WORK FOR YOU. This is a very difficult thing to change. So with you new

stomach and just having surgery you may experience slimming or flemming. First

you will feel like the food is stuck, then it comes back up in a clear liquid

–your saliva. It isn't vomit, so that is why it is called slimming or flemming.

It's a wake up call to slow down you eating and chew, and chew and chew some

more. Just go to the bathroom or have a napkin ready for the slimming or

flemming. If you try to overeat—which is bad you may experience this too

sometimes. For me it was always about not chewing enough. When I am full I

know I am, at first I wasn't sure, but sometimes I just got tired of all the

chewing, so I stopped eating. I now get the hiccups or my noise will start to

run when I am full. I know that other people have said they experienced this

too.

For the new people or people who are thinking of having Weight Loss Surgery, I

want you to know that I wouldn't trade one of these things that happened to me

for the wonderful new healthy body I now have and how happy I am. It is ALL

worth it. It has made me a much better person. I have been where you are

starting and I want you to know that this is the last and final thing that you

will ever have to go through. If diet and exercise worked for everyone we

wouldn't consider weight loss surgery. If you want to lose the weight it will

happen with good eating habits and some exercise. I will not just melt off of

you. This is your new tool to allow you to get where you want to do. You have

to put some effort yourself. This site is great for support and questions. So

jump in and join us. We are all regular people in different stages of weight

loss.

Hi

Thanks for that. Have googled taurine and found this

http://www.ehow.com/facts_5883622_taurine-hair-growth.html

so will get some capsules. Perhaps try L-Lysne too. I must admit that perhaps

my diet is lacking in some things due to lack of appetite.

Taurine is a really good thing.....this product has a bit of taurine in it and

it's a good thing for your heart, for relaxing stress and for your eyes.

http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-True-Calm-90-Capsules/841?at=0http://www.iherb.co\

m/Now-Foods-True-Calm-90-Capsules/841?at=0

Animals, especially cats need taurine on a daily basis. Kittens which are raised

on dog food instead of cat food often go blind, because this nutrient was

missing in their food. Taurine coincides with the Pleiadian Star system in the

sign of Taurus. People born with this rising in their chart are often blind.

(just a little history for you)
