Coconut oil

Hi, .

Lauric acid, a saturated fatty acid with a chain length of 12 carbon

atoms, is the chief fatty acid in coconut oil, amounting to nearly 50

% of the total fatty acids.

As you noted, lauric acid is mostly removed in the production of

medium chain triglycerides from coconut oil.

A chain length of 12 puts lauric acid right at the boundary between

medium-chain and long-chain fatty acids. These are treated quite

differently by the digestive system. Long-chain fatty acids are

reassembled into triglycerides after absorption into the

enterocytes, and then they are assembled into chylomicrons and

exported to the lymph system, which transportes them via the

thoracic duct into the general blood circulation. From there, they

are picked up by high-density lipoproteins and transported to the

liver, which uses them and distributes them to other cells of the

body via the low-density lipoproteins.

The medium-chain triglycerides, on the other hand, are exported from

the enterocytes directly into the blood and are carried directly to

the liver via the portal vein.

Medium-chain triglycerides are more easily absorbed by the digestive

tract than are long-chain triglycerides.

I suspect that when you switched from MCTs to coconut oil, your

digestive system had more difficulty absorbing it, because of the

longer-chain lauric acid. Probably some of this was not absorbed,

and stayed in the lumen of your intestine. That's probably what led

to the loose stools.

I'm not aware of any significant antipathogenic substance in coconut

oil.

What happens if you ingest other oils or fats containing longer

chain saturated fatty acids, such as the fat from beef? Do you get

loose stools from these, also? If so, that would support this

explanation.

If this explanation turns out to fit the observations, then I think

the question this raises is why does your digestive system have

difficulty absorbing the longer-chain fatty acids? It could be a

result of bile insufficiency. It would be interesting to know what

happens if you take oxbile extract when you ingest the coconut oil.

If this corrects the loose stool problem, this would suggest bile

insuffiency. If not, perhaps the issue is congestion of the

lymphatic system. This can occur in CFS, I think because of the

lower production of water as a metabolic byproduct by the cells, as

a result of partial blockades in their oxidative metabolism,

secondary to peroxynitrite rise resulting from glutathione

depletion. In addition, I think the lymph system can become clogged

with immune complexes as a result of leaky gut syndrome and an

overactive Th2 response in some PWCs.

Nil, and ,

O.K., I really missed the boat on the anti-pathogenic properties of

lauric acid and coconut oil! Thanks for setting me straight.

Hi the only effect i notive from coconut oil or shredded coconut on my food

is that too much causes more joint pain for me so i really have to be

careful and take very minute doses and divide it up over the day.... never

had that kind of reaction fromolive leaf extract and have taken 500 mg 3x

day at times which is the normal dose for that but probably taking 1 /4

shredded coconut and less than 1/16 th tsp coconut oil daily.

h, Spectrum coconut oil is OK and will do, but you will like the Garden

of Life brand better, get it at Whole Foods (et al) where it is often on sale

plus

you get a free copy of Jordan Rubin's book with each purchase. Even better

is the Radiant Life brand which we pick up at Ecopolitan (22nd and

Lyndale-hit the organic juice bar while you are there!!) or you can get it

on-line. NT lists 3 main sources in the index.

Dr Mercola says the 3 TBS a day, but I only do 1 tsp a day, as far as straight

off the spoon, I WILL tell you there are SEVERAL brands out there, some good and

some bad of course - but also in taste. So keeping trying brands if you didn't

like one~

I do fell better when I take it - but I cannot say any *drastic* results - same

thing - maybe if I took more - but I am happy with that I take -

Also cooking with it is GREAT - it does not break down all the nutrients in it

when you cook it like olive oil and vegetable oil do - so that is another reason

to cook with it instead.

If you like herb tea - it is GREAT to put a tsp in that - it helps to sweeten

the tea a little, and dissolves well - and helps you to get more into you :o)

A glass of herb tea with the coconut oil in the am and pm - will help ALOT with

weight (and cleaning out if you need it! LOL)

Thanks Bonnie,

It's funny you should bring up the coconut oil. I am a big believer in it,

and have actually been using it for several months for general health and on

my heels, elbows and face for moisture and it really works. I haven't been

too consistant with cooking with it or eating it but think I will start

because I have heard wonderful news on how it helps the thyroid.

,

I have been using it for about a year now -- never did notice any associated

weight loss (but then, I only use 10-14 grams each morning, then use it for

cooking -- so nowhere near the recommended amount) -- I do use it for a

moisturizer, my seborrhea has pretty much cleared up (I also use the

comfrey/aloe gel), and I sometimes put it in my hair.

I haven't tried it on my heels, it seems too thin to stay on -- maybe I should

start putting it on at bedtime (I use a product called Foot Fetish (winter only)

that's a waxy type formula -- it stays on my heels (as long as I'm wearing

stockings/socks) throughout the day.....

But do try it on your shingles -- it just might help.

Bonnie,

My heels were so bad, they were bleeding and I saw a tremendous difference

in just a couple of days. Now they are completely healed and soft. I thought

that was nothing short of amazing. I don't think there is anything it

doesn't help!

Coconut oil be solid? Not sure what you are talking about. Typically 76

degree coconut oil is solid or semi-solid below approx 76 degrees. Just stir

up your container if the oil has liquefied. You will melt your oils to make

the soap anyway. So it won't be solid then.

Is it true that when making CP soap with coconut oil, that the

coconut oil has to be solid when I start makinging the soap? I see

76

degree coconut oil for sale, but in this weather it'll be liquid.

Why would it matter if it's solid and I melt it with the other

oils?

It

will be a liquid when it's mixed with the lye/water solution anyway.

You can get coconut oil locally at Sanarak Paper & Popcorn, 456

Hinman, Bflo, ph. 874-5662. When I first started, they did sell me 10

lbs instead of the whole 50 lb pail. Give them a call and see.

Hi Diane, 76 degree coconut oil woudl be better for soap. Fractionated CO

is different. Yes you melt it with the other oils so I think that what

whoever said you need the solid one, just means 76 degree verses

frationated. Its solid on a " normal " day when its not so hot out LOL.

Please consider Kae at Olive Tree soaps. She has just bout everything you

need and is super fast in shipping and pretty close and good prices.

Palm Kernal and Palm oil are not the same thing so be aware. Palm Kernal is

similar to Coconut oil in properties it adds to the soap.

I was told that the coconut oil should be solid before I start

making soap. I know that in this heat 76 degree coconut oil would

not

be solid. I didn't ask, but did wonder why? I'm just going to melt

it

with the other butters and oils.

You confirmed that it doesn't matter! Thanks!

I use the Expeller Pressed coconut oil which I order from

www.tropicaltraditions.com

They also have the Extra Virgin but I seem to do better with the

expeller pressed.

Someone in the group had posted another site that looks like good

quality

www.wildernessfamilynaturals.com

HFS migth have Garden of Life in the Extra Virgin which would be good

quality.

There is probably only 1 or 2 processers of the good stuff so as long

as whatever brand you find gets it from the good guys. I think the

Tropical Traditions is a pretty direct source. They also keep adding

other top quality products.

That's great that it's helping you. Didn't work for me -- gave me heart

palpitations big

time, also leg cramps. It's just another one of those things that will work for

one person,

depending on their body type, their type of CFIDS or fibro, etc..

Four QUARTS? That should last you until next Christmas! :)

Dr. Mercola says on his site that he had palpitations, too (and I did

as well, the first day or two). His interpretation was that this was

because it stimulates thyroid, which will cause heart arrhythmias as

well as fitful sleep and overheating. Mercola said that this passed

in a week or two as his body got used to it, and I found that to be

the case as well. If the symptoms return, I'll just skip it for a day.

They were having a special sale. It's usually $25/quart, but they

were offering four quarts for $60. So I went for it.

And I'm already almost halfway through the first one. I'm using it

for cooking, too -- it's really nice to cook with, and the family

seems to be liking it.

I took Lauricidin. It had a remarkable effect. Then it was making me

angry and with bad temper. I had to quit. I used it for a few

months. Just four pellets would work.

New to this list. Desperately trying to find some relief for pain and

exhaustion. My first doctor appt. is Jan 3 with Kaplan in CT. He is

the only Dr. who acknowledges FM and CFS exist.

I'd like to try some of the ideas mentioned. Can I buy the coconut oil that

THe kind of coconut oil that helps me is VIRGIN coconut oil. It also

happens to be organic and cold pressed. Spectrum, Garden of Life, Omega and

Tropical Traditions are all sold in helathfood stores as well as online.

I've been getting virgin coconut oil from _www.tropicaltraditions.com_

(http://www.tropicaltraditions.com) by the gallon for several years.

Possibly. It has to be organic virgin coconut oil. I understand

there's a brand called Spectrum that's very good, and may be carried

in stores.

You can google Tropical Traditions and order it directly online from

them. Theirs is super-premium quality.

Lots of good info, articles and links at Dr. Mercola's website.

Hi Mercuria. Do you have a link to Mercola's comments? I've searched, and

can't pull

could also be

due to clogged arteries, you know? Don't wanna havea heart attack...! :)
