if you can't call a doctor to find out, I'd call Schering Plough's Commitment to

Care and ask them.

Meds

Do you all think I should do shot and meds? Just

carry on like there is no problem?

I am also on daily meds and I got creative during the recovery

period after surgery. I crushed them in apple sauce, I opened the

capsules and poured them into my protein, I broke them in 2 or 4

pieces and swallowed them. I knock on wood when I say I had no

problems with my pills.

,

It amazes me how little some in the medical field know and understand. I have a torn cartillage in my right wrist and am having surgery on Nov 21st to have it repaired. I called the surgeon's nurse to let her know that I cannot take pain med with tylenol on a regular basis and that any pain med I take has to have the approval of my pain mgmt doc. The nurse called back and said the surgeon had put a call in to my pain doc. She said he will either prescribe darvocet or mepergan (demerol). I told her the mepergan was fine, but that I could not take darvocet on a regular basis because it has tylenol (the 'cet' on the end of any pain med stands for acetamenaphin/tylenol, as far as I know). She insisted that darvocet does not have tylenol, it has ibuprofen. I told her that my doctors don't want me taking ibuprofen either because I am on coumadin. She said, "but you'll be coming off the coumadin for the surgery." I told her that was true but that I would resume coumadin in the evening after the surgery. She simply responded with, "Oh. Well, Dr. will work it out with your pain doctor." I told her that was fine, I just wanted it worked out before my surgery.

Of course, I had to look up darvocet to see if I was right. Yes, darvocet has tylenol in it! You can get plain darvon with nothing added to it. You can get darvon with aspirin (which is also out for me because of the coumadin). There is no darvon with ibuprofen added to it. Geez, it's not that hard and there are not that many pain meds out there. As the nurse for an ortho surgeon, the main meds you would deal with are pain meds. I would think you should know them backward and forward, but that is not the case. It's not just this nurse, I've had other nurses and even doctors try to give me meds that I am allergic to or that are definitely not a good idea because of my other meds or because of the liver disease.

Gotta stay on your toes to keep the people in the medical field straight! Sorry, didn't mean to step on toes. It's just that doctors and nurses are human and they don't know nearly as much as we think they do. We have to be our own advocate.

I haven't been able to read most of the posts lately because I just haven't

had the time. However, I wanted to share just a little info regarding

stopping meds for AIH. I have the latest version of Dr. Palmer's book

on hepatitis and liver disease. In the book it states that 50% of people with

AIH relapse within 6 months of stopping meds. I've misplaced my book but I

believe it says either 80 or 90% relapse within a year. My GI/hep had said he

would keep me on imuran forever because the risk of relapse was too great.

However, my rheumatologist wanted me to go to Mayo clinic for a second opinion

mostly on my chronic pancreatitis. In their infinite wisdom, the doctors at

Mayo said we should stop my meds for AIH. I was on 100 mg imuran and only 2.5

mg prednisone. My liver enzymes were staying normal or near normal on those

meds. They stopped the meds in July. In Oct, I had an episode of my liver

enzymes being almost 200. In Dec, I ended up in the hospital with my liver

enzymes 1215 and the other around 580 - forgot which was which. Also my

liver was enlarged. Started back on prednisone immediately and then imuran a

couple of weeks later. I'm now on imuran 100 mg and pred 10 mg. Labs on

thursday revealed AST 55 and ALT 87! Needless to say I'm thrilled. My liver

is also no longer enlarged. My doctors hope to taper the prednisone further

soon because I have diabetes and they've had to put me on oral med for

diabetes because of the prednisone. They intend to keep me on imuran

forever. ly, based on my experience, if they even suggest stopping the

imuran, I'd pitch a screaming fit! I tolerate the imuran quite well, but HATE

the prednisone. However, we're moving in the right direction so I can stand a

few months of prednisone and hopefully will be able to be below 5 mg a day

within 3-6 months.

From my experience, I think that stopping prednisone completely and watching

closely might be fine and that is my hope. However, I would tread VERY

cautiously before allowing the doctors to stop all meds for AIH.

Without going into detail, check again with your doctor ir pain

specialist. I'm on about 5 different meds and they all attack from a

different angle. Some are for nerve pain, some just classic pain, and

others are muscle relaxers. Thought I have had times where I threw

everything I got at them and go no relief, unfortunately there are days

like that. Then I try all the non med things, massage, Tens

unit, Ice, Heat. Sorry about your current position. Dave

thanks dave,

i actually figured it out later when i got a fever and started tossing cookies everywhere. apperently im sick; got a bug. i didnt realize i was sick, because of the medicine. kept me from feeling bad, but it never helped with the back pain. so when i stopped my doses my illness or whatever showed up. interesting...

No greater burden can be borne by an individual than to know no one cares or understands.

Risa,

The standard first line treatment after NSAIDS is Methotrexate. It may be a

chemo drug but the doses are 10-100 times lower then the child with cancer

It is extremely safe and has been widely used since the 80's.Although it's

not FDA aproved for kids it is still the mainstay of drug therapy for kids with

JRA.

You do have to give atleast 400micrograms of folic acid with the norm being a

script for 1mg folic acid every day.

When you first start looking up MTX it can be quite scarey, just remember most

of what you read is due to actual chemo doses.

With rhoutine labs any problems can be found way before obvious, severe side

effect that are highly unlikely.

Hi, It sounds like you are in a scarey state of mind and health right

now....remember, if you are not well, you will not be any help to

your kids! Take care of YOURSELF first....then you will be able to

take care of these court and custody issues in a much more calm and

rational manner! Putting something on hold to get help doesn't mean

totally giving up....it will make you stronger in the end! Just my

thoughts! Good luck,

what you may not understand is I wont be allowed any contact unless

my etg tests are all negative and being on estrogen and whats in it

may affect the tests I am not taking the tylenol...I havent had

contact in over a year because of this test being used

incorrectly..thats why I need info to provide to maybe have a

Oh, dear. I had to laugh, Pam -- not at you, but with you. I remember when taking a pill was a big deal. Now I can be holding the container and forget if I took the pill or not. So I open each bottle, lay them out...2 allergy, 1 blood pressure, 2 tramadol, etc. Then I take them. I know I should be using the the plastic daily pill organizer that I bought, but I only get around to refilling it half the time. I think I have a bit of ADD myself....seriously. I don't know the answer to your question. But if alcohol or a tranquilizer can increase the efficacy of pain medication, perhaps the Focalin can also. I'm not sure there has been a study done on taking amphetamines and

pain control. One of my children tried ADD medication and had a poor

reaction to it. I tried one myself to see what it was all about and

sure enough it was pure speed. My house was clean, the dinner was on

the table, everything was just lovely. The next day I threw them

away. I could see myself getting addicted to all that energy.

As soon as I got home from the hospital following my RTKR, my 18 year old son fixed up the alarms and reminders on my cell phone; it went off at the times I was scheduled for my CR Oxycontin, my coumadin, multivitamins, percocet, all my meds. Not only did the alarm sound, but a little message flashed telling me which pill to take at the prescribed time. This was a lifesaver for me.

LOL...Oh, Pam. This gets better and better. I bet you really get some ribbing from your family. I still hear from my kids about the time about 25 years ago when I grabbed the Lysol instead of the mouth wash while trying to get out the door to church. The kids called the Poison Hotline. They said as long as I didn't swallow (no, I immediately spit it out) and rinsed well, I was okay.
