Guest guest Report post Posted February 2, 2001 Hi Genny, DO NOT let them remove the spleen. She has a good chance of full recovery. My daughter had ITP in 1987 when she was 6 months old. They tried everything to bring her platelet count up, prednisone, platelet infusions, etc. She was supposedly the youngest ever to be diagnosed with it. When they talked to me about removing her spleen I had had enough. I could not let her live like that. She was too young to be sick forever. I finally refused all further medical treatment except for daily platelet counts. By age 3 she was normal. She is now a beautiful 13 year old with no health problems except cold induced asthma (which we can live with). ITP occurs more often in teenagers. It usually only lasts a few months. It is caused by a virus. Antibodies start going a little nuts and start attacking the platelets. Most people are originally diagnosed as having leukemia because the platelet counts are so low. A bone marrow test will show that with ITP (unlike leukemia) platelets are being produced, but antibodies are killing them off as soon as they are produced. The main danger is internal bleeding. My daughter would get big black bruises on her face by simply falling asleep and resting her face on the carseat side. I padded everything in the house so that she would not get seriously hurt by falling when she was learning how to walk. She always looked liked someone was beating her, but her bruises were black. Her platelet counts had to be hand counted because they were so low. She was being treated by a Hemotologist at St. 's Childrens Hospital in Philadelphia. She did have an excellent doctor who contacted people around the world to learn more about the disease ITP. Autoimmune disease really run in my family. I have Lupus and rheumotoid arthritis, my son has just been diagnosed with IAH. There probably isn't an ITP support group because it usually is not a lifelong battle. If you ever have any questions on testing, etc. or just need someone to talk to.. email me at debbiehenry@.... I've been there. It's hell, but you get through it. Tell your mother her future isn't as bleak as she thought. See if you can get her to see a hematologist. Take care of yourself, Debbie > Hi Joan: Could you please tell me if there is a group for ITP (Immune > Thrombocytopenic Purpura) My mother was diagnosed with this in June and is > being referred to Moffitt Cancer Center by her oncologist. Guest guest Report post Posted September 13, 2001 Hi Joan, Nice to hear from you, how are you doing? Jodi and I are doing great thank you. She has had some headaches but we think it's the Prograf and hopefully they can decrease it soon. She is back to work but just working on the computer right now and not with the doctor. He has been really great about not letting her overdo to soon. I am very thankful about that because she feels like she is ready to go right back where she left off. I know by experience that can be a mistake because I went back to work full time after six weeks and did to much and paid dearly for it. The fact she hasn't had any signs of rejection is just such a blessing. Thank you for your concern and support. I hope you have been having fun and not feeling bad. Talk to you again soon. God bless American Love, Genny

Guest guest Report post Posted February 7, 2002 Glad to hear that you were able to spend some " calming " time with your children today before going to the doctor. I know that you will garner the strength you will need to break this disappointing news to your mom. My son grew up knowing I was ill. He has never known any other way and is very protective of me. He told his grandmother once when staying with her that it was time for her to go rest because that was what his mother did everyday. He thought that was a normal routine for all households. I would love to talk more, but I must leave for a circle meeting soon. Really too tired to go, but am making myself. Sometimes I just have to force myself to go or I would never do anything! Will touch base later or tomorrow. Take care. Carol Joan Claffey wrote: > Hi, > My doc. office called this morning and told me to come > in immediately. Guest guest Report post Posted February 26, 2002 Joan, You are hysterical. Many, many years ago my precious husband decided he wanted a boat. He went and bought one and then informed me. I was not too happy with him. Then 4 years later, I was out of town for a week and when I came home, he had sold the first boat and bought another. I was furious and did not speak to him for days other than to answer " yes " or " no " . He couldn't stand it. We got into a very heated discussion about his buying a 2nd boat and not consulting with me. He made the comment that he worked hard and deserved it. I told him not to forget that in our entire marriage, I had worked at least part time while I was finishing school,. full time after graduation, and part time after our child was born, in addition to running a household and caring for our child. I simply told him that I had come to the conclusion that for our marriage to survive, one of us had to change our philosophy about money. I realized he would never change and so I was changing my philosophy. I looked straight at him and told him I was no longer being practical (which was my nature) and if I wanted something I was going to purchase it just like he did. Over the years, he has told many people that he thought I was kidding but he found out I meant it! In fact, I have been shopping with my MIL and she loves to remind me when I hesitate to buy something, that if her son wanted it, he would buy it. She helps me put things in perspective. Of course, after the first boat incident, she said she knew just how I felt, as my father-in-law had bought his plane without any input from her. She has been a wonderful ally over the years. Would love to hear some more of your stories. How are you feeling? Have you been able to stick with the quitting somoking? Take care. He has a plan to surprise me but the restaurant called and left a message to confirm his reservations last week, although they did not leave the name. Wherever it is it has the most magnificant views of NY. Have you noticed the WEATHER!! I have the feeling we won't even be seeing NJ very clearly. 14yrs ago today it rained just as hard but was 60 degrees. Thank you again. You're too sweet.
