,

That's a hard call - the flu shot this year is not supposed to be a " live " virus

- so it shouldn't cause anyone to get sick. Rob's rheumatologist and

nephrologist both said absolutely no immunizations until he has been off of

steriods for six weeks (that isn't happening anytime soon) - so I really haven't

thought about it much this year. I always get one (I was in the military for

twenty years and was required to have them - never got sick because of one.)

though I was too busy last year and forgot. Good luck.

My rheumatologist called my mother the other day (I'm in college away from

home) and told her to call me and tell me to get the flu shot as soon as I

can. I usually get it, but last year I didn't and ended up getting the flu,

and then pneumonia, and missing a lot of class and generally being very ill.

With the JRA and the drugs (Enbrel especially) combined, my rheumy thinks

it's better to get the shot than to end up getting really sick.

Two years ago Ellie got the flu shot with no adverse effects, except that

she didn't like getting the needle. Last year the doctor's office had just

run out of flu shots on the day I brought her in, so we skipped it for that

year. This year when I took her in, she saw me getting my shot first and the

sight upset her so much we didn't dare get her poked.

Does that help?

Nettie and both got/will get their flu shot on the day of their

infusion. Since it is a killed virus, there is no reason that it can't be

combined with the IVIG was what our doctors explained to me. Nettie has

never had any problem getting her shot on the same day as her infusion. Our

clinic at the hospital (Immunology/ID) gets the flu vaccines early because

they treat immune compromised children. The hem/onc dept. also get it early

and every kid that is admitted for chemo and hasn't had it yet, gets it on

admission to the floor as a mandatory precaution. That way the vaccine is

active when they become neutropenic a week or two after chemo. I am actually

going to get my shot with on Thursday at the clinic whent he has his

IVIG. It will be my first " shot " of any sort in over 6 years!!! I am

terrified of needles and don't treasure this concept at all. The staff know

I won't voluntarily go get the shot so the doctor wrote a script for me to

get mine at the same time as so I can't go crying out of the room.

Pretty mean and sneaky, but smart and wise at the same time. LOL I can

start an IV, draw an ABG or access a port in any emergency situation with any

one of my children. I love watching the Trauma shows, OR stories, etc and

don't flinch at all at the blood and gore, yet virtually pass out during my

own blood draws and run for dear life at the idea of a shot! I hear you. . .

I am a whimp! LOL

Take Care and God Bless,

years, CP, Developmental Delay, g-tube, HIV+), 6 (CVID, IVIG x 4

months, brain tumor survivor, severe hearing loss, chronic sinus and ear

infections, asthma, seizure disorder, GERD) and Trayvon 3 (Ivemark Syndrome,

Last year got his shot the same day as he got his IVIG infusion.

They will probably do it again this year, as our local health clinic is

always nervous about it as they don't know much about PIDs.

I am now holding my breath that I can get Abbie well enough and in to see a ped to get the * & %#^ flu shot. She had about 2 weeks with no upper respiratory issues, had her Remicade and here we are back again. During those 2 weeks, I tried to get in to see the ped that Dr. Groh recommended, and they had no well visits until January, and refused to give her the flu shot without having the doctor see her first. So now I am holding my breath praying that she doesn't get it. She has really been in a lot of pain. Whenever she feels the least bit well, she goes full tilt and completely overdoes it. Sound familiar? So we now have to get through the holiday and will hopefully hear about the MRI results on her knee early next week. The rest of our move seems to be a piece of cake compared to this (including our house in Sioux Falls that is STILL on the market). lol

Wow, I didn't know any of that was stuck inside me. Sorry guys. lol

Hi Christy,

I have talked to you before you moved. We had the same doctor (Dr. Jung). How do you like your new doc? Those flu shots are a necessity. I hope Abbie has good results from her MRI. I also hope you get your house in SD sold. It's always something, isn't it? Have a blessed Thanksgiving.

Thanks Lori for your information regarding NO flu shot while taking Enbrel.

I shall ask my Rheumatologist about that and I might call the Enbrel company

tomorrow and see what they have to say.

Good idea to check with your Rhumey I think. Last year I ask mine

about the flu shot and he said by all means for me to get it. And

it is that time again so I shall go to the clinic and get it.

I used to go over and get one at work, but always seemed like I got

a little sick from those shots. I went to the clinic and got one

from the white coats and did not get sick or anything. I am

thinking they had a better grade of flu shot or something maybe.

>The shot/flu vaccine is inactivated and you shouldn't get the flu

from it. <

I have had one flu shot and 3 days later I came down with the flu. I hadn't had

the flu in years, and I know without a doubt that it was caused from the flu

shot.

Just from my personal experience, I tried to avoid the flu shot like the

plague. I was one that never had a cold/flu, etc... but as soon as I would

get the flu shot, I'd have the symptoms for approximately 2-3 weeks.

Since leaving the military, I've never got one.

Did you try Tamiflu, the anti-viral drug that you take within 48

hours of first symptoms? It really works, as my dh used it a couple

of years ago.

Sorry you got so sick. My dd with ASD had the flu/pneumonia combo

last year. It was a long miserable 3 weeks, and we won't hesitate to

use Tamiflu if it happens to any of us this year. The most important

thing is to admit you are sick and get the prescription!

Ellie,

I hadn't heard about this second shot for the flu. Do you have a link for that

specific recommendation from the CDC. I'll need it to get my pediatrician to

give Jon a second one. We have had bad cases of flu around here in children.

At least one child I know of has died already. We have gone into hibernation

mode with .

,

I just read you next post. My Drs. have recommended that everyone in my house

receive a flu shot...with hopes to at least keep the flu out of our house.

cannot receive the flu shot with CVID. He makes antibodies to nothing.

When he was diagnosed at the age of 4, he had made zero antibodies to anything

(he had been up to date on his immunizations at that point because we didn't

know). He had virtually zero IGG, IGM and IGA.

I will say, this will be the first year that I will get my family the flu shots.

It was last year that I asked and you couldn't find a flu shot ANYWHERE! This

year I will be smart and get them early... Luckily, we escaped it last year.

Check with your Dr. to see if he at least recommends the flu shot for the rest

of the family. Good Luck.

This is a very good question, I have been told that and the whole

family need to receive the flu vaccine this year. made antibodies to

the influenza whatever that was on his bloodwork, is this the same thing? Is

that why he should get the shot, because he will be protected from it?

Hi all,

I have a question. Now with having CVID, the Dr's don't want her to

get the flu shot. She doesn't make all her antibodies so what is the sense. But

even on IVIG how is she protected from the flu? She has always gotten her flu

shot when she was IgA def, and we had to pull her out of school this past winter

because of a flu epidemic in our schools. So now what happens? this does get

confusing, trying to learn something new again, it is a whole new game going

from IgA def, to CVID. What do you all do? Do you get he shot and hope it helps

of hope the IVIG has some protection in it? thanks for the input
