Guest guest
My doctor told me flu shots are not a live virus. But, ever since I was a young child I have had a reaction to every shot I have ever gotten, I have always run a fever afterward.. Usually with the flu shot, I get every symptom of the every flu for a period of 24 hours. This year, it was only for a few hours, a nap & I was fine. Everybody is different and everybody reacts differently, that is my story. Kathy, WV dx 6/01 stage 3/4 PBC
Guest guest
Okay, I've just got to weigh in here. I've had the flu shot every year (maybe missed a couple) since the mid 60's, probably 1966. Bad epidemic that year and as a pharmacist I was in constant contact with sickies. I AM a believer! Had a few sore arms, but never got the flu. Also have had every pneumonia shot that came along starting in the early 80s, cuz I'm prone to pneumonia. The one last year gave me a really sore arm and yuck feeling. Said it would be the last one for me. Stay warm and well, Jeannette OR PBC/AIH
Guest guest
Thanks Jeannette for weighing in! With you being a pharmacist (my nephew is also one) you know what your talking about for sure! That makes me feel better that we have a pharmicist on the group...=) I will be getting my flu shot every year regardless of how it makes me feel as I know I " could " potentially get really sick without it..so alittle yucky feeling for s few days isn't nothing I can't handle. So far..and I got the shot yesterday...I don't feel sick at all and my amr even has stopped aching..but even the ache wasn't THAT BAD...LOL..I have been through alot worse ....I am grateful I can get the shot! My phuemonia shot is good for 5 years , right? So I got one this year..which was my first year to get it ..so I should be good for the next 4 years now...Yeahhhh! One last thign to NOT have to worry about..which is great! Take Care, Kathy Live Simply,Love Generously, Care Deeply, Speak Kindly, Leave the rest to GOD.... Guest guest
Hi there, I also take Imuran ( Azathioprine). I currently am on 200mg a day...since the Liver Dr. took me off the Prednizone combo I was taking them both at the same time. I started off at 50mg. and the Dr. increased the Imuran and decreased the Prednisone...this has worked well for me. Guest guest
Got mine Thursday and I feel fine. I have gotten one every year, but was only definitively diagnosed with AIH in May. I had a severe flaare up at that time. Flu shots are advised for people with chronic illnesses (which I believe AIH is) I got the shot before to protect myhusband and son who have asthma, and also before that when I worked in the hospital. Guest guest
Geez, ! I'm already confused! Now you're making me crazy! <giggling> I do get my flu shot each year so I guess I'm covered there. I see my surgeon for a check-up next week, so I'll ask him about the pneumovax when I'm there. Thanks for the heads up, in any case. <smiles> Jackie
Guest guest
Jackie will you please let me know what your surgeon says. I am going to call my doctor's office also and I just want to see if we all get the same answer since I am going to have my second surgery in 4 weeks. Thanks!!! Connie Flashwun@... wrote: Geez, ! Guest guest
Hi Jennie, I'm not sure if Still's has and effect on the flu, but I do know that you can have a flu shot depending on the steroid dose you are on. The flu shot is a dead virus and shouldn't cause any problems. Unless you are on a very high dose of steroids, you can have the shot. I had to have a flu shot, as well as several others for nursing school this year. I was taking 10 mg pred daily when I had them. I had talked with my Rheumy and he said it wasn't a problem. Just be sure to tell whomever gives you the shot hat you are on prednisone. </HTML>

Guest guest
Jennie, My Doc insists I get one...the meds put me at a greater risk...the flu shot helps prevent...key is Helps.. alan..... Flu Shot Ok, quick question does anyone get a flu shot? I have never gotten one before, because I rarely get sick. But do you think I should get one now? Does Still's make you more easily sick with the flu and the like? Plus with the steroid I know the immune system becomes weaker so I would the flu shot end up making me sick instead? Thanks for any advice you can give, Jennie

Guest guest
Hi Jennie, Unless your doctor indicates otherwise, I would recommend the flu shot. I got mine today, and get one every year. The flu shot cannot make you sick. The virus is killed, but your body still makes antibodies to fight the virus. Some vaccinations other than the flu shot are live viruses, and would be contraindicated with our immune systems and medications. The virus is cultured with egg, so you cannot have the flu shot if you are allergic to egg. Pregnant women cannot get flu shots, either. I never have any side effects to the vaccine, but if you did have side effects they would be mild. It is impossible to get the flu from the flu shot, contrary to what some folks believe. If someone gets the flu after the vaccine, they were going to get it anyway. It takes up to 6 weeks for the body to fully develop antibodies to the virus, but the body does begin developing antibodies right away. If by some chance you do get the flu after you've had the vaccination, it will be considerably milder. It is best to get the flu shot in mid-September or October. The vaccine is recommended for the elderly and those who have compromised immune systems. Be sure to ask you doctor first! Don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions. Be well, Barbara Gardner Ventura, CA bgard@...

Guest guest
Hi Jennie, This is my second year of ever getting the flu shot. in the past, I've not gotten sick because my system has always been over-reactive. But I figure since I am on drugs that suppress the immune system and I'm back in a city where I get bronchitis twice a year, that I better protect myself from the flu, so I got the shot. No flu and no reaction last year. This year, no reaction to the shot either. I also got the 5 year pneumonia shot last year.
