a parent has to be in the car and if the passengers are not related they

AND the kid has to have good attendance

at 16 they can take the road test BUT the parent has to sign a paper the kid

has 40 hours of road driving or been to a driving school

lololol harder to get the freedom of driving

i think its a good idea and they learn that a car is like a loaded gun and

Hi,

I definitely agree. Driving helps so much to foster independence. My mother used to always say that two things a woman needs are: her own bank account and her drivers license. Around here, we don't have public transportation. No busses or subways, so you still need a car to get around. One of 's concerns was whether or not he'd ever grow tall enough to be able to drive safely when he was old enough. He's four foot two now. They've also recently made the age restrictions higher, so by the time he's ready his height may not be such a big concern anymore. He's already sat in the driver's side, adjusted the seat forward, and with a couple inches underneath him ... he can reach the pedals and see over the hood. Stretching : )

Aloha,

Georgina

When I was 16 driving never crossed my mind because I did not think I would be able to but much to my surprise by age 17 I had the itch to drive. I tried it, I could it! and I got my license immediately. As a 19 year veteran of driving you can take alot from me but geez dont take my car!!! LOL Just ask Tree.... In FACES we have 2 ladies whom also thought driving was not in the list of can-do's but since meeting FACES have gotten their licenses and they were each in their 30's! Both agree they should have tried much earlier. My recommendation is let Tabitha be the judge and maybe offer a bit of encouragement and when she is ready she will go for it!!!! Be well and be happy...... Donna Fox

Hi Coleen,

Boy, do I know what you mean! With my memory problems, I was afraid to put the

car in neutral at a long light...afraid I would get " frazzled " and stall it out

when the light changed (if someone honked if I didn't react soon enough), etc.

And, keeping the clutch in was really taxing. Plus, it was a sporty Grand Am,

with low-slung seats, so it wasn't real comfortable. Keeping " all fours " up in

the air all the time wasn't too cool. We have a lot of traffic up here in the

Dallas/Ft. Worth area, so about all I could handle was a 15-minute drive at

low-traffic hours. Scheduled all appointments around the traffic flow.

Your description of your hills reminds me of my younger days in Los ANgeles. I

had a 36-horsepower VolksWagon beetle...and drove a car pool of 4 other girls to

work. Real steep hills in downtown L.A. Jam-packed traffic in rush hour, and

you're looking straight up. Cars would cram right up behind you at the lights. I

was SO afraid of rolling backwards and hitting the car behind me...had to be

REAL quick on the transition from brake to gas and let out the clutch REAL fast

and gun it to get all that weight up the steep hill!! Those were the days.

I drove a lot, too. Had a '50 Chevy convertible as my first car at 16. Drove to

Phoenix every weekend from Los Angeles to visit my older sister. What a

blast...crusing over the desert at night, watching the sunrise as I was driving!

We took all those capabilities for granted, didn't we? So simple to do...and now

they are beyond us! I really wish would trade in his truck...it's a stick

shift, and driving for him is getting more difficult. I traded cars with our

daughter, Amy Rose, bless her heart, or I would really be in a pickle now. Never

knew it could make such a difference.

How's your foot doing now? Better, I hope.

Love ya, Rose

From: Coleen <granscot@...>

Subject: Driving

Rose,

I, too, had to switch from standard and shifting to

automatic. It wasn't

the clutch for me but the brake instead. Where I live there

isn't high

traffic, in fact biggest problems driving here is hitting a

buzzard or a

deer but one of the little towns I go to is hilly in spots,

twice I was

waiting to get onto the highway, being parked on a downhill

and it took

both of my hands/arms plus the bad foot to hold the brake

or it would

have shot me out onto passing highway traffic. Scared me

enough after

the second time to trade a pickup for an automatic car with

electric

everything. I, too, could not believe how suddenly the

driving did not

absolutely kill me when I got to where I was going. I think

all the

moving to push in the clutch, although to me it was like

breathing as I

don't even remember doing it, moving to move the shifter,

power steering

wasn't as easy, all added together it was like working out

and left me

almost unable to get out and do anything once I got there.

I still do

not drive in high traffic, I am not stupid, I have no idea

how my brain

co-ordinating with the legs might or might not work when I

don't know

where I am going at a fast speed. I am someone who two

years ago made

yearly trips of 1050 miles, drove straight thru for 17 - 21

hrs

straight, stopping only for gas. Now should I stay in that

sitting

position for 20 min, its all I can do to be able to walk

but at least I

am not completely exhausted when I get there-just have to

unstiff the

body and get it moving. I even noticed when my foot was

broken and

couldn't drive that when I resumed driving I had lost a bit

so now make

sure I drive at least twice a week.

Trudy,

How about if Caleb puts a pillow underneath him while driving to raise him up

more? I drive with my seat as far as it can reach the steering wheel and

have a pillow in back of me for support. I'm looking into getting my seat

repadded which helps in giving more support and height. The car that Caleb

would be driving is the seat pretty new or does it need to be repadded?

Like Helen said...some pillows...

also there are a few other ideas....My father makes his seat out of

wood and puts some foam on the top and wraps it in cloth.

I use a boat seat I got at WalMart...this idea was from Casey

Hubbelbank. (pardon the spelling...I'm not awake)

I added a couple of couch pillows at first...then later on I tried

those pillows that people get for their kitchen chairs and tie them.

Which works great for me. Also I use one for when I go out to eat.

The key, is to try different things...drive around about a week

before you say you dont like it..and make adjustments...I've tried a

few different things...plus, remember to adjust the ENTIRE seat as

well...put the seat back or forward

I hope these help!

Trudy,

I use foam. It's a great option because you can cut it to fit the proper size

for the seats and it can be glued together if more heighth is needed. Plus,

it's cheap and it retains its shape, where as the stuffing in pillows has a

tendency to shift. My mom also made covers for the pieces we cut for my seats,

so they're easily washable.

Best of luck in finding something that works for Caleb :).

This depends on the doctor, the physical therapist, and your own individual recovery, I think. I have seen people saying that they could drive 3 weeks later and some that could not do it until 3 months later.

I had TKRs done on both knees simultaneously and was allowed to drive at about 5.5 weeks post-TKR.

BE SURE that you wait until the doc says it is okay and be sure that it is written into your medical record, because otherwise, you could be in deep trouble. if you were involved in a car accident and the other party wanted to show that it was mostly or totally all your fault, rather than his, he might be able to hit you with big liability if he could prove that you were driving against doctor's orders. So be sure to ask specifically that your doc put it into your record, as soon as you are at that point.

Hope this helps.

I am going to push the issue then. My wife starts back to school

(teaching) three weeks after I have the surgery. We live in a semi rural

area a long ways from town so I have to be able to drive. Besides I run my

own custom woodworking business and every day I am down is a day of no income.

I drove five weeks after RTHR and that was one week sooner than the

OS specified. I didn't ask permission; I just did it.

After my LTHR, I drove at four weeks (I asked permission that time).

Key to driving is whether you are off any pain meds that might impair

your judgment. Also the style of vehicle you drive and whether you

can safely get in and out and the type of transmission. Obviously

with automatic, one can drive with a LTHR sooner than RTHR. It is

also wise to get your doctor's OK since if you were in an accident

and it was discovered that you had been advised not to drive, there

could be an insurance/liability issue. In other words, don't do what

I did with my RTHR and ignore what the Dr told me!

I had a THR April 14,2003. My doctor told me between 6-8 weeks

depending on me. At my 4 week check up he said to soon at least 6

weeks. So at 6 weeks I started driving a little. At 8 weeks he said

ok. Physcal Therapy told me to have the Dr. write it was ok to drive

in my file - which I did. They had some patients that their insurance

companies did not want to pay because they thought it was to soon to

drive. Just a thought.

Which leg? left or right? I had some occupational therapist tell me

there is a local automatic 3 month driving restriction for 3 months

with RTHR (I'm driving after 4 weeks)

I drove at 3 weeks with the surgeon's approval with a right THR. He said it had to be in an SUV - no cars below they are too low.

Hi all,

Though I am a bit younger than many of you (56), I did not feel confortable driving for about 2 months after surgery. It was my right hip, so I was very cautious about having to step on brakes very quickly. My Dr. is very conservative and wants me on some precautions for 1 year. However I do not even mind now. It is 6 months and I can walk fine with no pain and go and do most of my normal activities. This is a very tough surgery on the body and everyone heals a little different, but you will not regret it in the end.

-Katrini First of all I have never ever driven. But is all depends

on the state you live in. Like pa is if you had a license before it

is six months. If you never have driven it is a year. My sister and

a friend are going through that right now. I also have info on that

for each state. You will have to check with the transportation

department and your doctor has to agree.

Good luck

Bet she would too if she was close to the doctor who could do the approval. Margaret.....I forgot if its your right or left hip. When I asked about driving after surgery, the Rehab MD said there was no problem with it since it was my left knee. He already knew I didn't take pain meds during the day because they make me almost pass out.

By the way.....did I tell you I had experimentally tried a Tylox during the day and monitored vitals after it? Within an hour, my pulse rate had dropped to 44, and pressure to 67/50. No wonder I feel horrible and puke on the stuff.

Hi Susie,

You are right, I don't seriously see myself riding my bike any time soon. I was just joking with Stan!

My bike is still standing in my shed, covered with dust. I keep it there as a symbol of hope that some day I *might* ride it again.

Best wishes to you!
