Believe me I plan too! You must have nursed your baby for at least 9 months

before you can become a LLL leader which I plan on doing. As soon as I found

out I was preg I started learning everything I could and spent hours each

day reading about pregnancy and BF, watched a ton of BF video's from the

local pregnancy center, went to LLL meetings and hung out with BF'ing

mothers. It has NOT been easy but we've stuck it out through a very sleepy

baby, flat nipples, 6 weeks of severe engorgement (pumped up to 13oz a

session to relieve engorgement) having to pump and feed her expressed milk

in a bottle (that was exhausting! every 2 hours it was feed, pump, wash pump

parts all of which took an hour so I got very little sleep!) for the first

several weeks, thrush and very unsupportive family members all telling me

she's starving! you don't make enough milk yada yada yada. Even the hospital

did everything they could to sabotage BF=( When I finally was ready to try

BF (even though the hospital told me I would " not be allowed " to BF my dd at

the hospital) none of the nurses would help me and all said they knew

nothing about BF. This is a very busy maternity ward and they know nothing

about BF'ing?! I was told I had to wait for the WIC lady to come in and show

me how. Thankfully a BF'ing friend came in and gave me the support I needed

and ran interference with the nurses=) The WIC LC only had about 20 min to

spend with each person, my friend spent HOURS which was wonderful!

No I was there 2 year ago also. I would encourage the person if they really wanted to BF to see a LC. My first son was a horrible breast feeder now with my second it is a totally different story he nurses like a pro and I am more educated and prepared. Sometimes we just get caught up in the arrival of our first baby and think everything is going to come naturally and when it doesnt we give up I think that is what happens to a lot of women that try to BF and say that it didnt work out and hey in my opinion a few days or weeks is a lot better than nothing at all.

it doesn't always work out, it didn't with my first. Of course I didn't try

long enough and didn't really push it, but I was younger and she was my first

and I didn't know much about Breast feeding.

No, because that happened to me with my first two boys but I BF my next two

sucessfully.

There are a lot of reasons that it might not work out but for me it was lack

of knowledge, lack of support and my Mother standing over my shoulder saying,

" just give him a bottle! " .

So no, I don't feel like smaking a woman who says that.

No, I feel sorry for them, but if I can educate them for the future I choose

that route over anger.

For the record, I have never experienced bf failure, either, because I chose

to educate myself in advance.

More than anything I feel sad for her and what she will miss out on. I have learned not to judge people and their choices. Many women with a history of sexual abuse have a terrible time with the intimacy that breastfeeding involves. There are many women who are completely misinformed by their doctors or have an intense amount of social pressure. How about a Islamic woman who feels that she needs to keep her body covered at all times, this is a huge hindrance to breastfeeding in public. Until our society becomes one that is entirely supportive of breastfeeding and not at all supportive of formula feeding we will continue to encounter women who for whatever reason felt they she couldn't breastfeed. Only compassion and education will help her the next time around to even give it a chance.

No, because I was there ten years ago. I was young and naive. I

thought that I just had to put him near my breast and he would do the

rest. I also had no support around me (neither my mother nor my

mother-in-law had breastfed). The hospital didn't encourage it. So

after he was born, they took him to the nursery and gave him a bottle

without me knowing.

But believe me, me second and third child were a whole different

story. I saught out the information first and was more successful.

I agree, Joan! What a shame that there is so much misinformation out

there. My pastor's wife is pg, a miracle as he was told he was unable to

have children. They are so excited. She thinks she wants to bf, mostly

because of the expense of formula. It will likely be her only experience

with pregnancy and breastfeeding (they have an adopted 3 year old

daughter, and I'm guessing they will just be having the 2 children)

We talked for a while Wednesday night and she said she wanted to

supplement so her dh could feed the baby and bond with her. I quickly

explained all 5 of mine were breastfed and never had a bottle and their

daddy bonded just fine. I'm afraid she's going to sabotage herself before

she starts, she's very open to info, though, and I've been feeding it to

her in small amounts whenever I see her. I did tell her no supplements

for the first 6 weeks, at least, so she could build her supply. We'll see

how it goes.

There are a lot of reasons why bf doesn't work. I think

that it is an individual decision for each mother. It wasn't

an option with our first child, since she was adopted & we

only had less than 2 weeks to prepare for her arrival. The

bond that I have with her is just as strong as any bond that

breast feeding could have generated.

I remember how horridly judged I felt because she was not

breast fed. Breast feeding family members acted superior,

like they were better mothers. Having been through it, I don't

think that breast feeding makes one mother better or worse

than another. What matters is that we MOTHER our children.

I believe with all my heart that breast feeding is best. I would

not have worked through the pain and heart ache of the last

seven weeks if I was not convinced passionately it is best.

We just can't judge others for the parenting decisions they

make.

Just my humble opinion, having done both.

Yours,

Hi,

I chose (as you say) to educate myself too. I went to class, read

everything I could, asked for help, read some more, joined this list,

etc....... I started before Adam was born and continued educating

myself afterwards. I did not give up but I still experienced problems

and had bad pain, among other things, for the first 2 months.

Education isn't everything. Breastfeeding, as it is in many things

including my chosen profession, is something that cannot be truly

learned until you are experiencing it.

Sue,

Try taking her places with other bfing moms, so she can meet more people too. LLL is another good place to go, or the breastfeeding class.

This is very true--educate yourself in advance and learn with the baby after

birth. Even with my second child I had things to learn about breastfeeding.

With the first it was source nipples, positioning, latch-on, waking a sleepy

baby; with the second it was prescription drugs and nursing.

I was one of the lucky ones, I didn't know much about breastfeeding, though

it should 'just happen' and it did. It was only later during my time of

bf'ing that I learned there were sometimes problems getting started.

Lol, well said!! , if it bothers you that much, maybe you could do

some work with LLL or something to help to promote bfing and educate women,

that is really the problem. I didn't bf my first, I was totally ignorant

and thought that bfing was just this completely natural thing that I would

know how to do automatically. My baby is due in 2 weeks, and this time I

have read everything I can and talked to alot of women. Information and

support should be more available and maybe then we'd hear more women that

say " I tried to bf and I had a hard time but eventually it worked out

because I had alot of help and information. "

Sue -

This is exactly how things were with my first. I wanted to breastfeed him,

so I did. Nothing more than that. I knew there could be problems but I

didn't learn how severe they could be until I was busy nursing my second.

Both my kids were great nursers ... I am very lucky. Let's hope I remain

lucky with these next two!!!!

That is great that you had a friend like that to help. None of my friends

have breastfed, unfortunately, but I am determined to suceed this time so I

will make sure I see the LC and do everything I can. That's wonderful that

you plan on being an LLL leader. I am going to a meeting before my baby

gets here just to soak up some info.

I didn't mean to seem like I was discrediting your statement. Instead I was

explaining why I read in advance to learn before my baby was born.

I remember the awful smell of my youngest brother spitting up soy formula,

his battles with ear infections, and his ongoing allergy struggles. I had

alsao heard that bfing could prevent all that, and I had to learn

how--that's me--to do it (bf). My dh read the books too. We are alike that

way--we both read ahead to be educated in advance.

Even though I had read in advance, I didn't know all I should have. With

baby #2 I did some things differently in delivery that made starting to bf

easier than with #1.
