Blithe,

My personal experience is that bfeeding does not guarantee that you

won't have a weight problem, or that you will be smart. My kids are all

Blithe,

I can say that what our mothers and grandmothers did does indeed affect us.

Today the incidence of obesity, asthma, Crohn's disease, breast cancer,

diabetes and allergies is huge. These are all things that are at increased

risk by the use of formula. Many of us can say that we were fed formula and

were fine but as a whole group of adults we are far from fine!

Well, maybe they are " just fine " but that's not enough for me. By

breastfeeding I know I'm doing the absolute best thing for my children to

make them healthy in all ways. I find myself wondering if I would be

smarter if I had been breastfed instead of formula fed. Or maybe I wouldn't

have the weight problem I do if my mother had breastfed me. These are

things I will never have to wonder about for my own kids. I know I have

given them the best start possible for a healthy life. " Just fine " isn't

enough for me or my kids. I want them to be the best they can be and

breastmilk can do that. Formula can't. I really think we can't look at

what our mothers and grandmothers did in comparison to what mothers today

choose. Those were different times. Today there are all kinds of resources

to get support in breastfeeding and more information on why breast is best

and formula harmful. So yeah, you're " just fine " and I'm " just fine " but

our kids will be better than that.

Joan,

I'm not saying breastfeeding is a guarantee but there have been studies

showing breastfed babies have higher IQ's and that they are less likely to

be obese as adults. In my case, I was allergic to formula so I was switched

to soy formula which I didn't keep down much better. As a child I was

diagnosed with a milk allergy (among others) and drank goat's milk most of

my childhood. I also was diagnosed with asthma as a child. I have grown out

of both the allergies and the asthma but I still have a weight problem.

Maybe formula contributed to these things and maybe not, I'll never know for

sure. I'm simply saying I will never wonder if formula caused my daughters

to be ill or overweight because they have not been artificially fed.

I did not say that what our mothers and grandmothers did does not affect

us. In fact, I'm in total agreement with you that formula causes many

health problems. I just don't think that our mothers or grandmothers

choosing to formula feed can be compared to women today making that choice.

The risks of formula feeding have now been proven and there is a wealth of

information and support for breastfeeding. I don't think it was the same 20,

30, or 40 years ago. That's why I don't think badly of my mother for

formula feeding me. She didn't know then what I know now. And when she

new better, she did better. My younger brother was breastfed for a year or

more and she completely supports me in breastfeeding my children.

Blithe,

I see your point. I cannot condemn anyone for formula feeding but am very

concerned as to the effects of formula on babies. Just as not every child

without a carseat will get in an accident and be hurt, not all babies fed

formula will be effected by it, but the risk just isn't worth it. I find

that even today, mother's don't know of the dangers of formula or don't have

the support for breastfeeding. I find it appalling that WebMD is

advertising on cans of formula. The medical community certainly has no

excuse for this sort of behavior. They have all the research at their

fingertips and choose not to share it with mothers for the sake of the

almighty dollar, that I find sickening!

Like lin said, there are only two guarantees in life: death

and taxes. Not even breastfeeding can offer a guarantee of children

without illnesses. It offers a reduction in risk. Think of our wearing

seatbelts. We don't wear seatbelts to *guarantee* our surviving a car

crash; we wear them to *reduce our risk* for injury. Not one of us would

likely conclude that because mounds of tests, studies and research proves

that people who wear seatbelts during collisions suffer fewer injuries to

mean that we would NEVER be injured...

Just as breastfeeding reduces our children's risks of illness, it can't

guarantee it. I equate not breastfeeding with not wearing a seatbelt

because seatbelts are something 99.99% of us probably agree with. I know

that prior to 1985, when wearing seatbelts became part of the Texas laws, I

drove all over without wearing one... yet I turned out just

fine. Thankfully, the law *did* help protect me, because on Dec 1, 1985,

when the law became active, my car was totaled, and I only had a bruise on

my forehead.

I was a formula fed baby. My first child was primarily formula fed. I

haven't had any of the serious illnesses yet listed in the AAP's policy

statement on breastfeeding either. I guess you could say that I turned out

" just fine. " I scored a 1350 on my SATs in high school... and I can't help

but wonder if I would have done better had I been breastfed.

The main difference between wearing a seatbelt and breastfeeding is the

amount of time you see the results. If you wear a seatbelt in a collision

and survive unharmed, the results are spontaneous. If you wear a seatbelt

every time you're in a moving vehicle and never experience a collision, was

your risk still reduced? Of course it was. If you breastfeed, your child

will have a reduced risk for illness/disease. Imagine that in your family,

diabetes is a common childhood illness. Not breastfeeding your child is

similar to not wearing a seatbelt in an accident-prone area. You can't

guarantee that you'll be in an accident, but since it's known to happen,

your seatbelt can offer protection. Diabetes can take years to manifest...

sometimes even into the late teens.
