Guest guest
Let's start with the AAP's 1997 recommendation. Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk (RE9729) http://www.aap.org/policy/re9729.html << Epidemiologic research shows that human milk and breastfeeding of infants provide advantages with regard to general health, growth, and development, while significantly decreasing risk for a large number of acute and chronic diseases. Research in the United States, Canada, Europe, and other developed countries, among predominantly middle-class populations, provides strong evidence that human milk feeding decreases the incidence and/or severity of diarrhea,1-5 lower respiratory infection,6-9 otitis media,3,10-14 bacteremia,15,16 bacterial meningitis,15,17 botulism,18 urinary tract infection,19 and necrotizing enterocolitis.20,21 There are a number of studies that show a possible protective effect of human milk feeding against sudden infant death syndrome,22-24 insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus,25-27 Crohn's disease,28,29 ulcerative colitis,29 lymphoma,30,31 allergic diseases,32-34 and other chronic digestive diseases.35-37 Breastfeeding has also been related to possible enhancement of cognitive development.38,39>> All of the little numbers are refernces which are available at the website. And this is not intended to be rude, but even with knowing all that you do about *breastfeeding* there is a lot that you were not aware of regarding formula feeding. We need to stop saying 'breast is best' and start saying formula is worst. BF needs to be the norm and formula feeding *inferior.* Jenn -----Original Message----- From: M. Guest guest
Who would be coming up with these gifts for BF moms? LLL Is a non-profit organization. And the companies that you mentioned have no where near the multi-million dollar marketing budget that the pharmaceutical/formula companies do. Every dollar that formula companies spend trying to get BF moms to use their product comes back to them ten-fold. Even the information that comes hose " BF Friendly " packs is not always accurate. Read it all again with a critical eye. Are those diagrams showing proper positioning? Are the photos of the FF moms all poised and composed while the BF moms are in their nighties or bra? What about he messages for *when* you need to supplement...not *if.* Simply by carrying the cute little cooler bags with those handy dandy gel packs and breastmilk storage bottles in it, you are advertising for Ross. I did it too until I 'got it'. Jenn -----Original Message----- From: M. Elliott Its someone else's fault for not comming up with a " gift " to give breastfeeding mothers. (snip) Maybe the key is to write to Avent or Medela or Ameda and have them put together a free breastfeeding mother's kit. I think the formula companies are already doing a great job since they include information on breastfeeding in their packs. The pack I got from my hospital had bf'ing information in it as well as a cold pack for keeping bm cool.

That's exactly the type of situation I would want to avoid. Donating it to a homeless shelter is one thing (something formula co's should do but don't since it doesn't generate future paying customers) but giving it to pregnant woman is not for me. I think it implies to them that it's something they will need. Plus, the motivation behind it is against my beliefs. I considered Wendi's suggestion of sending it back, but i'm afraid my letter would only get tossed and the formula would be sent out again to someone else - I would have spent a few bucks to do them a favor. I'll probably just take a picture of it going out in the trash and send that to them. Guest guest
Hi, my name is Wanda and I have kinda been lurking for awhile, just getting my fill. My dd was born on 4-19-00 and i have to tell you that at the hospital that i delivered at there was a cooler with the ice packs and breast pads and all info about breast feeding. I couldnt even get the free small diaper bag that comes with the free formula unless i had one of the coupons from the formula manufacturers. I thought that was a great idea bc you werent tempted to just give a bottle right away if bf wasnt working out. Guest guest
Wanda, Welcome to the list. It's great that some hospitals have started giving breastfeeding packs. There certainly are plenty of incentives for formula feeding. Wanda, I got something like this with my first child too, but never connected that the breastfeeding literature was written by a formula company. Needless to say that my breastfeeding efforts ended in a nursing strike at 3 months with him. Check for information about who published your literature. Ross Labs, Mead-Abbott and Wyeth are all formula manufacturers and have a vested interest in your breastfeeding not being successful. I'd take any info from them with a grain of salt and look for info endorsed by breastfeeding organizations instead!
