Guest guest
, I'd have to agree with you on this one. What you say makes sense. Don't you wish that somebody would do a study on this? You could really challenge your son with something like Mandarin or another tone language. That would be a really fun experiment. Poor hubby had to listen to a really interesting Newfoundland/Idaho accent when I got back from my brothers wedding and I drove my brother nuts when we were young and listening to the presidential debates with Jimmy . I sounded like a Georgia native. I won't mention what I sounded like after doing phone interview with other library workers from Texas, Hawaii, New York, New Jersey and Tennesee in one evening hehehehehe. Guest guest
I'm a rightie, but pick up accents so badly that people think I'm imitating them and sometimes get mad. But my 20-year old son, a leftie, has problems with foreign language study, although that may not be fair--he took Mandarin Chinese in HS and I don't think that's all that easy to learn. He's starting Spanish to meet his language requirement at UCLA, and we'll see how that goes. It scared him, though, after his trouble with Chinese. Which, I have to say, it the only thing in school that ever gave him trouble. Guest guest
You guys are making my year. First you account for all my idiosyncrasies and then go on to prove (at least anecdotally) what a lot of the Cognitive people have been saying for years. There HAS to be a connection between autoimmunity, handedness, sexual preference (I wonder how many of us have gay relatives as well), and brain wiring. These similarities would make a wonderful study for someone who wanted to do it. Guest guest
Terry, Mandarin is a horrid thing for an English speaking person to learn because of the tones. We just aren't used to speaking music. So, even though he is a lefty, he may have missed his most opportune time to learn tonal languages, which would have been in the first three years of his life. There was an article I read recently (and I can't remember where, I think maybe Scientific American or Discover) which seemed to indicate that people who play with those color coded kid versions of instruments may be the ones who have perfect pitch. They think tone and see the color. Strange things brains. He will probably do just fine with Spanish. If he is at UCLA he might even be able to find Spanish speaking people to converse with. Of course he will pick up a dialect then. (Laughing because my daughter learned Castilian in Argentina and was laughed at in the Basque country of Spain. They thought she was trying to put on airs. Guest guest
Hi All, This is interesting. I know of no gays in my family, if there are or were they didn't tell anyone. Now, my husbands family is a different story, they have quite a few that are. Several that are my husbands age and older. They have autoimmune disease. And I honestly believe the dyslexia in my girls comes from my husbands side. He is very intelligent, he is excellent in math, history, government etc. He has terrible handwriting and he doesn't have good spelling skills, but vocabulary is excellent. I've seen dyslexia in me, but never noticed until after the graves disease. There are days I struggle with how to spell a word, even to the point of spelling the first syllable and I was always excellent in spelling. I was always in spelling bees in school, but would misspell the word on purpose. I've never liked crowds so to get out of the spot light I would get the word wrong, until I made it to almost the end. Guest guest
Sorry about all these posts. Trying to get caught up with emails. Okay. My oldest is dyslexic and she is right handed, but she can pick up accents very quickly and change from one to the other. She is always the singer in the family, she listens to a song once and can sing it. At 9 y.o. she could sing Montgomery Grundy County Auction, after hearing it once. Guest guest
Ok, I'm going to add another oddity to this. I learned this through my researching DES daughters (as I am one). There is a 10 fold increase in gay and lesbian offspring in the DES children that were born to mothers who took DES. Researchers believe that this is due to the bathing of the fetus in the synthetic estrogen (DES) that the pregnant Mom's took while the fetus was developing at a specific time during gestation.
