she is allowed to subject her self to see and expose her self to other victims

of assault, sicknesses, diseases, car wrecks, stabbings, shootings, etc., etc.,

(you get the point) all at night, where she should safely be at home. It's OK

for her to be out late to see mangled bodies but it's not OK for her to go to

the movies with a boy from school. And again for all of you who " think " I'm

defending the criminal you are totally wrong, as in way wrong.

*************

I started riding with my dad and his crews at the age of 12,

occasionally. By 15/16, I was riding pretty often, and while I was

with my dad's crews, I wasn't under his direct supervision, and not

always at his station depending on students, etc.

It's probably the single biggest impact I've had in my life - and kept

me straight more than anything else could have. I saw early on what

drugs, alcohol and violence can do, and I saw the impact someone could

have when someone else is in crisis. It was very surely the defining

time of my childhood, because I saw the world as it is, not as a

teenager could imagine it might be.

That's completely and totally different from my being able to make a

rational decision in the face of my horomones, and pressure from those

in authority over me. I was never raped, for sure, but I was exposed

to conversations that in any other situation would be completley

inappropriate, and likely were in my presence anyway.

That said - even if the 15 year old girl in question stripped naked,

laid down on the stretcher and said " take me now, I'm yours, " THESE

two medics were old enough to to override any physical impluse they

might have had, realize on how many levels this was wrong, and stop

her ride-along RIGHT THEN AND THERE. Rather, these two appear to have

actively participated in activities with her that were not only

illegal, but absolutely, positively unethical - especially for the

situation they were in.

There is no justification for this, PERIOD.

<snip>

Does ANYONE here have moral character, other than Gene (even though he IS a

lawyer?)?

<snip>

Mike,

They were wrong. No buts about it. NOTHING could possibly excuse their

actions. The young lady and her parent(s) may not have made a good choice with an

overnight rideout; however, NOTHING could possibly excuse the actions of Russel

and Barash. NOTHING.

As far as the comment " there are two sides to every story " also made by Randy,

that is why we have trials by juries, and not vigalanties. Nevertheless if

someone did this to my child, I might be the one on trial.

I suspect most of the list agrees with you, Gene and I , but are just too sick

to write about it.

The next thing we need to do is address ways to solve this problem in society

and therefore in EMS. Education in medic schools, training to practicing medics,

polices and procedures by our educators and adminstrators can all be a part of

the solution. I am sure I have many things out, but we need to embrace ethics

and morality, rather than just cover it in class once " for the exam, " which

happens all to often because we have so much technical content. We all need to

model moral behavior. Especially in front of EMS students and new medics. Ernie

Rodriquez used to do a talk called " Fried Green Rookies " He talked about how

rookies and students emulate the behavior modeled by the preceptors (and

non-preceptors) on the street. If I remember correctly, he talked a great deal

about behaviors that do not lead to professionalism, we need to revisit this

topic as profession.

The medical terminolgy when my three-year old repeats my speech is echolalia,

when he repeats my actions, it is echopraxia. If he says F***-Y** and hits me,

is it my fault or his? mine

When a 29 year-old and a 37- year old rape a child, the fault lies with them,

not the child.

I am a strong believer that self-responsiblity is a good thing, but we have to

teach it, we have to emulate it, we have to live it. I don't know how these two

were reared by their parents or what they saw on television or the movies or at

school and it really doesn't matter now, BUT it is important to the next group

of professionals that the professionals they see model good behavior and

acknowledgment of mistakes by the professionals they are going to emulate.

Okay, end of rant.

Nile

PS. " Sad Day for EMS and a 16-year old " is also wrong, this is a sad day for

EMS since the rest of us are now tainted with this, but sad could not come close

to describing what happened to this young lady.

Actually, at 18, 21, or 40, it would have been arguable, at least,

that it's not rape. And 18 year old, 21 year old, or 40 year old

would have been progressively more capable of recognizing the

psychodynamics of the situation and getting out of it... and

physically more capable of fighting, should the need have arisen.

Regardless of how their lawyers could have argued the case, the

ethical dilemna remains - even if it's consentual, is it ethical,

especially with what's effectively a student whom you're in

supervision of?

For what it's worth, everyone among us is CAPABLE of rape. If you can

imagine it, no matter how it horrifies you to do so, you're at the

very least CAPABLE of performing the act.

If you'd like more insight into this, I'd suggest two books:

The Gift of Fear, by Gavin DeBecker

and

On Killing, by Lt. Col. Grossman (ret.)

Both explain a lot about how the mind works in fearful scenarios, and

the mental coping tools we use to justify our actions in a variety of

circumstances.

Right, but the adult did, and now they're paying the consequences.

It's not that they don't get to have a side in the story, it's that

there is no story. Since she can't consent, there's no arguement as

to whether or not she did - it's automatic that she couldn't, and

didn't. So, the adults in question KNOWINGLY engaged in sexual

activities with someone they KNEW WAS NOT CONSENTING...

Question for you: You arrive to find a 15 year old patient with a

non-life-threatening complaint, and not pregnant. She wants to be

transported, and you can't reach mom, dad, or anyone else to consent

for her. The police are all busy and can't come. She's complaining

that she stubbed her toe, and that it hurts a little, but there's no

blood, deformity, loss of sensation, motion, etc. - NO visible

injury, and no reason to think that she's in danger of injury if left

untreated.

She says she wants to go to the hospital, and she's willing to sign

your form to take her.

Do you? She's attempting to consent... and by your logic, if you

took her it wouldn't be non-consentual because regardless of whether

she CAN consent, she IS consenting... right?

Mike :)

PS - If you don't take her, who consents to the refusal?

There you have it folks - women without injuries haven't been raped.

Randy,

Are you a friend of the accused? I ask because your Yahoo profile

http://profiles.yahoo.com/texacutioner1 shows you are an EMT from Fort

Worth. I am just wondering if a friendship for one of these folks is

clouding your judgment. I may be off base, but if you are defending a

friend, your opinions are understandable, misguided, but understandable. One

very important part of friendship is telling your friend he/she is wrong.

are. She wouldn't have known how to defend herself, even if she had wanted

escape, there was no help, and that she'd get hurt if she resisted. Heck

they probably had both the doors blocked in the unit, she couldn't have

gotten away if she tried. It has nothing to do with her being in the

Explorers. And yes, the Explorers are technically run by the " Boy Scouts "

but it's a separate entity that has accepted girls into it's programs for

years. Look at their " Mission &

KID... naive to the ways of adults, and especially street-hardened adults

like ourselves. Put yourself in her position for a moment, not with the

knowledge you have, as an adult man, but with the knowledge and experience

of a 15 year old girl. She was afraid, she was raped, and she was still

trying to be " good " like she was supposed to be. It took a lot of courage

for her to come forward with it at all. Check out the actual data below.

It's attitudes like yours that promote the image that girls " want it " and

that rape isn't a big deal. Could you look your wife, or sister, or mom, or

daughter in the eye and say that? I sure hope not.

understands a little bit about EMS can't get out and run for help or call

911 from her cell phone which I'm sure she probably had one. Nothing that

I've read has indicated that she was forced to stay in the back of the

One

very important part of friendship is telling your friend he/she is wrong.

least enough to make marks or cause injury to back her story up!

hope not... This CHILD was probably scared out of her mind. The way I read

it, she couldn't even speak to say yes or no. Fear is a very very powerful

weapon. And I can tell you that girls are brought up to be " nice " and to be

respectful, and cooperative. Also, girls aren't natural fighters like boys

are. She wouldn't have known how to defend herself, even if she had wanted

to. You weren't there, you don't know how they likely intimidated her, and

probably made her believe, through actions or words, that there was no

escape, there was no help, and that she'd get hurt if she resisted. Heck

they probably had both the doors blocked in the unit, she couldn't have

gotten away if she tried. It has nothing to do with her being in the

Explorers. And yes, the Explorers are technically run by the " Boy Scouts "

but it's a separate entity that has accepted girls into it's programs for

years. Look at their " Mission &

> Vision " page here:

> http://www.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?s=mc & c=mv The whole focus of their

mission is to turn out " good " kids. They don't teach confrontation. Also

notice that one of the " Scout Laws " is that a scout is " Obedient " . She's a

KID... naive to the ways of adults, and especially street-hardened adults

like ourselves.

> -WalksAlone

U.S. Justice Department statistics are even lower, with only 26% of all

rapes or attempted rapes being reported to law enforcement officials.

Sorry, I may have sounded disagreeable. I agree, Meredith. We're
