everyday for your child and if your child is in crisis..they still will

come one day a week and the school teacher's are not trained for the

my child to a special school where they have ABA everyday.

Gabi, if you look up the qualifications for an Autism Coach you

will find that the only test they have to pass is a breathing test. Granted

some may be former teachers but the position doesn't require them to be

teachers. In fact it doesn't require them to have any background where the word

" autism " is used. Look at the minimum requirements. Their main

function really doesn't have anything to do with parents. They are there to

assist teachers with autism concepts.

Maybe the confusion is with the school district and not with

" people " . They claim not to deny ABA Therapy but you would have to

ask them. Try contacting your ESE Specialist by email to get an email answer

and forward the email to the group. All I know is what I hear.

When a n Autism Coach is working with behavioral issues she is

working out of title and may not be qualified.

The once a week schedule I heard from Everglades, where they do have a

cluster with an Autism coach, but no behavior specialist.

Actually they are both the same thing.

A behavior analyst can both assess/implement a behavior plan and provide good teaching strategies. In its simplest definition, ABA is "good teaching strategies."

Teaching is teaching, whether it be to stop hitting for attention or whether it be match the object cup to the picture of the cup. People often learn what they are good at and want to specialize in but behavior and teaching go together.

One can earn a Master's degree in Applied Behavior Analysis. One who has a Bachelor's can take a 3 course series/sequence, earn supervision hours and take a state exam and become a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA). One who has a Master's can take a 5 course series/sequence, earn supervision hours and take a state exam to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

School districts implement behavior strategies in their classrooms and conduct discrete trials based on the individual needs of the child and whether they warrant that type of precision teaching/direct instruction. The Districts offer trainings and train the teachers in these methods. Many school districts opt to not hire Master's level practitioners, BCBA's or BCaBA's for these behavioral positions due to cost but if one has the certification, it just looks better on their resume.

Autism coaches meet about once a month to learn new strategies, exchange strategies, etc.

Autism coaches generally know a lot about behavior and help teachers to implement strategies for both behavioral issues and academics.

Often, implementing visuals, social stories, etc. is enough to assist a child in being successful in the classroom.

The coaches also assist in setting up the classrooms in ways that help the students access their curriculum. They help with scheduling, collaborate with teachers and agencies like CARD. They attend a lot of trainings.

No wonder it is such a mess!! It reminds me of the saying,

" A little bit of knowledge can be harmful. "  In considering the

qualifications of the position the outcome may be more like, " the blind

leading the blind " .  Would you hire a teacher who " generally

knows " about teaching? So, why hire an autism coach who may know something

about autism and/or behavior? Non of them are required to know anything about

autism or behavior. If I'm wrong about their qualifications, where am I wrong?

Well, not really the same thing. ABA is a type of behavior therapy. A behavior specialist has the credentials has listed below but the plan that they may come up with may not necessarily be a 'ABA' discrete trial type of approach.My daughter has worked with a behavior specialist in the past to help her overcome the bad behaviors that were interfering with her learning and the plan that worked well with her was not a 'discrete trial' approach.So there's a lot more to the role of a behavior specialist than just ABA. Also although there have been significent cutbacks in behavior specialists in Broward, if anyone feels that their child needs one then they need to go above the ESE specialist of the school and either contact the district's autism specialist that oversees your child's school or the principal and request that a behavior specialist work with your child . I've done it in the past and would gladly do it again if needed. I refuse to let behaviors ruin a school year and prevent my daughter from learning properly. Yes they do get a lot of training and are well qualified in setting up the classrooms and teaching strategies etc. But they are not certified behavior specialists and sometime when behaviors start to get out of hand they may not have the experience or time to deal with your child's behaviors. Sometimes the autism coach has to sub for a cluster teacher that's out sick. So where does that leave your child?So with that being our only resouce, why should I let my kid's behaviors escalate and weeks go by without any real strategy being placed? Again, this is where a true behavior specialist whose only role is behaviors come in and help to take care of the problem.I'm not knocking the autism coaches. Often, implementing visuals, social stories, etc. is enough to assist a child in being successful in the classroom. The coaches also assist in setting up the classrooms in ways that help the students access their curriculum. They help with scheduling, collaborate with teachers and agencies like CARD. They attend a lot of trainings. If you think your child needs it, I suggest you ask and make sure you post your request in the Parent Input Section of your IEP.>
