Oh LOL! The doctor told you to walk fast for an hour oh LOL! What a sense of humour he has! I got to the point that the furthest I could walk, and that was with a real struggle, determined to keep putting one foot in front of the other, was a SLOW walk for 15 minutes, hanging on to my husband. Workouts were the least of my thoughts - surviving normal daily routines was more than I could do (and from this group will tell you how she was reduced to walking with crutches!). I had no idea that it was possible to get back to normal, but quickly learned from this group that it is. You just need the right medication. Doctors can't tell from the TSH and T4 enough information - those tests might well look normal, but you'll know yourself that you definitely aren't normal, so you need to get the Free T3 and Free T4, plus the two thyroid antibody tests done, to give some idea of what's going on. I also had an adrenal test done. I haven't got my results back yet, but was so bad that felt I couldn't wait another month so went ahead and self medicated with Armour and it made all the difference in the world. Personally I feel your doctor telling you to exercise like that shows he has no idea of what's happening to you. But all this is still very new to me, and I'm worried about advising you wrongly, so I'd be happier if someone more experienced could help as well:-))) I will help as much as I can though:-))) Love - just a thought - are you taking your thyroid medication at night? I had problems with dizziness at night, but was taking mine in the morning.

Exercise

Thanks chris,Yes, I do have all the symptoms you have mentioned.... Last year I had checked my TSH level which was around 3. My doctor told me that level within the noraml range. So I didn't care about this much. I gained 10kgs in the last one year... Now morning dizziness is killing me... Is it possible to get back to normal... My doctor is advising me to walk fast atleast for an hour... but I could walk continously not more than 10 minutes... Is there any other workout I can do? Amu

Concentrate on getting your thyroid hormone levels correct first..... anything over 2.0 is cause for further testing to find out what is wrong... 3.0 is NOT acceptable, it's the top end of the range, and, as I said, anything over 2.0 is cause for further testing to find out what is wrong.

For many of us that struggled and WILLED our way to function from day to day on low thyroid hormone levels... well, it's most likely how we ended up with the additional joy of having compromised adrenals.....

Tell your doc that you want the following, to find out just what is going on with your body. Your symptoms are not acceptable and being told that a TSH of 3.0 is okay is NOT okay.

TSH

Free T4

Free T3

Thyroid antibodies (antithyroglobulin and antithyroidperoxidase)

and Ferrtin...

Tell him you want copies of the results....

Then tell us what they found....

Oooppss.... I'm sounding bossy... sorry... but this is important.... I 'settled' for what the doc told me. and I nearly died from it..... I lived... but, well.. .I'd sure prefer not of have lost my house, my car... and everything I'd worked my entire life to achieve!

Thnks ! I got my lab test results. My TSH Level is 79.20 uIU/mL

My Free T4 level is 0.47 ng/dL. T3 is 0.74ng/mL. The Anti Thyroid

Microsomal Antibody is more than 1300.0 IU/ml and Anti Thyroglobulin

Antyibody is more than 500.0 IU/ml… Seems to me very high.... Not

much of awareness here about hypothyroid.... My doctor is negelecting

my symptoms.... Finding it very difficult to do my routine work...

Now I am on 150mg of synthetic thyroid harmone.... I found in this

group talking about Armour... In what way it is better than Synthetic

one... Here in my place no one prescribes that.... Just now started

my medication... can I contiune with it or I should ask my doctor to

change my medicine....

Thank You,

Some folks do fine on Synthetic others, like me need the natural.

The differences.

Synthetic is T4 only. T4 is the thyroid storage hormone, the body must convert it to T3, the active thyroid hormone. If your body is a poor converter you'll never do well on Synthetic.

Synthetic is manufactured with a sodium molecule to increase it's stability. Before your body can use it, that sodium has to be removed, that is done by the stomach acid. That's why you have to take synthetics on an empty stomach. If there is not enough stomach acid to remove the sodium your body can't use the hormone.

You take your dose once per day. Some people find that it's easier on their systems to take smaller doses by splitting it to twice a day, but that also means restricting food.

In the sixty some years synthetic has been on the market it's been recalled a gazillion times. For inconsistent potency, to incorrect potency, to unstable shelf life. A class action law suit was filed and the manufacturers lost, payment was made to thousands of patients that had been affected by the potency issues.

The tablets are all the same size, the potency of the tabs is identified by the color of the tabs. Some folks have problems with some of the dyes. They will do fine on one color/dose and then change to another had not do so well, change to a different combo of pills not using the 'bad color' and be okay again (this is pretty rare)

Natural is that, natural. It's made by doing some fancy freeze drying of pig thyroids. The powder they end up with is then checked for potency and the tablets are made. The larger the dose of the tab, the larger it is.

Natural thyroid contains more than just the T4 storage hormone. It also contains the active thyroid hormones T3, T2, T1 and another goody, Calcitonin (used to help the body with calcium). A majority of the active hormone that our bodies use still comes from the conversion of the storage hormone, T4, but many seem to be able to better convert the natural form and there is the added plus of having some of the active readily available. That way you get a 'shot' of it with the dose, it REALLY (for me) helps me feel better as I'm a poor converter.

The hormone is ready to use as is, you can take it orally, swallow, and not have to worry about stomach acid to get it to a chemically usable state, but it's still good not to have stomach full of food so that the pill dissolves and doesn't get caught up in the food and pass through whole.

You also have the option of taking the dose sublingually, under the tongue. Doing it this way allows the hormones to enter the blood stream directly through all the little capillaries under the tongue. The advantage to this is that you don't have to try to time your meals with you dose and you have the option of dosing more than just once a day. Dosing more than once a day allows your body to get the extra active hormones, a great help to those that are not converting as well as their body needs.

In the more than 100 years that Armour has been on the market, it's only been recalled once. It was a voluntary recall. They were doing a shelf stable test on a batch of pills and it wasn't up to standard. The batch was very near it's expiration date and they decided to recall it. There was no product any where to collect, it had all been sold and was most likely used up before the tabs started to lose potency.

I think I've hit the major points.... I tried not to be obvious... but I'm not a fan of synthetics. I didnt' do at all well on them....

Your doc needs a kick in the butt... You're TSH is criminally high, even without lab ranges your Frees aren't looking good.

You've just started so you have to give your body time to start getting things going... It takes 4 to 6 weeks after starting on replacement hormone, or doing a dosage increase, for the T4 to build up in the tissues and the body to be responding to the increased hormone. It's hard to wait that long, boy, do I know it, so does most everyone here, but you need to give your body time to do it's thing... if you increase too fast, with the lag time for things to build... you could be taking too much before you even realize in and then deal with that 'overdose', which means cutting your dose back... then starting over again with tweaking it up.... I know I say this a lot, I don't mean to be a harp about it... but you'll get to your optimum dose faster by taking it in stages then you will by rushing... and it's better for your body to give it time to adjust...

I'll stop now....

As far as switching meds... Two ways of looking at it.... if you are one that does good on synthetic, it can be more convenient to pop just once a day..... if you're not a good converter or not able to process the synthetic you will do better on natural. You'll have to be the one that decides if you want to try the synthetic first and see how it does for you or stomp your feet and get the doc to switch you.

I'll throw in my personal opinion here.... for ME, if I'd known 15 years ago what I do today about the hormones and the conversion and all... I wouldn't have spent two years fighting to get my body to accept synthetic, I would have thrown it away and demanded natural after the second or third time I threw up.

OMG, looks like you are probably an excellent Armour candidate. Reason for

this is that your T3 is as low as your T4. Usually, with that severe a

shortage of T4, there is a slightly higher T3, where the T4 has converted

very rapidly to try to compensate, but both of your hormones are in the

pits, obviously.

Hi Robin,

I don't understand...why would Tamoxifen stop you from keeping up your

walking?

I'm on tamoxifen and I just finished our winter hockey season.....I

trained once a week,played a 70 minute game every week,plus I walk to

work and back every week day ,it takes me 2o minutes each way and up

this huge hill but down hill on the way home lol.

I didn't have many problems when I started taking it...people say

that you put on weight...well I didn't. I couldn't sleep at first but I

take my tablet in the morning so I sleep like a log now. I did get some

hot flushes at the beginning and I still get a period every other month

which they are watching.(my doc doesn't want to take my ovaries as he

said that I would go into menopause full on and not gradually like

normal and of course we can't have hormone replacements)

The only problem that I've had with taking Tamoxifen is remember

the bloody tablet each morning. I've often had to ring my hubby to

bring my tablets down to work had to get someone to drive me home to

take it hehe......think that I have it under control now.

People told me about the symptoms etc and it scared me before I

started taking it ...everyone is different and I guess that I'm lucky

that it doesn't affect me.

Hi Ren,

Bikes are so fun...my son starts a paper run next week so I'm going

to ride my bike while he walks.....I love when I go down the hills with

the wind in my face....actually the wind will be through my hair as

it's growing so fast now.

I must check the breaks first though lol
