Okay, I don't know if there's anyone else here with a visually impaired

autistic child, but this is my thinking. When setting goals for , I

looked up what is developmentally appropriate for him to be doing. Then I

looked at his evaluations which told me what he IS doing. And I wrote the

goals from those two things -- building on the skills he already has and

working toward what is age-appropriate for him.

So what I think I would do would be to ask about what things other children

with visual impairments are usually doing, and make those the goals to work

toward.

As far as ABA, the technique wouldn't change but the methods would, if that

makes any sense. For example you would match textures instead of pictures,

or use brail cards instead of PECS. A good consultant would be able to come

up with a lot of really good ideas, I think. And you can always ask here if

you have specific things you need help with -- how do I teach him this when

he can't see it? We may not have experience with blindness but we can get

creative for you!

I hope that helps...sorry if I'm way off, like I said I don't have

experience with this. :/

This is a " new " technology. Data only reliably goes back 11 or so years and

so that is all the longevity that can be claimed. However, the implant

itself should last about 300 years with normal usage. A THR actually

abrades rather than polishing and their are several failure modes with it.

The major problem with a THR is that there is a large loss of bone to

install it and this leads to more and more problems as time goes by, making

revisions more difficult. Here is a laundry list

* Stresses do not transfer through the bones normally, leading to

osteoporosis. (I just got a bone density scan and am _growing_ more bone.

Since my hip was slowly dissolving pre-op, I'm giddy to say the least.)

* In poly/metal implants, the accumulation of plastic debris causes

rejection of the implant. (No plastic in this implant.)

* Subsequent revisions lead to more bone loss. (So far the revisions have

been due to individual failure, i.e. there doesn't seem to be a

well-defined failure mode for these as of yet.)

* There are lots of restrictions in motion and activities. (I'm only

prohibited from bungee jumping and parachuting)

I (and several others on this list) have returned full tilt to sports with

no problems. A metal/poly THR restricts you to walking a total of 1 mile a

day to avoid wear on the implant. I jog 10+ miles a week on my doctor's

advice since it helps bone ingrowth. I am also a very active martial artist

and throw up to 500 head-level kicks a week plus I do lots of rolling,

falling and throwing (think demented gymnast). I spent a weekend recently

getting slammed on the mats and tied in knots (grappling workshop). Not

even a peep from the hip. Pre-op I was essentially frozen in one position.

It is expected that when trials are done in the US, this will become the

standard hip replacement.

Since a resurfacing preserves most bone, if it fails, you can get a THR and

at the least avoid the inherent problems longer. This is the current party

line in the US about why to get one. In the UK (where it has a much longer

history and is rapdily becoming a standard) it is now touted as the

procedure for active people. I went from the US to the UK and got my

resurfacing there.

I would get another resurfacing in a heartbeat if the other side needs it.

Your mileage may vary as they say, but I have nothing but an unqualified

success. I should quickly add that bone stock is the big factor in success.

If you have bad stock or other problems, then this might not be for you. It

is best to contact a resurfacing doctor asap and get an opinion.

Good Luck and Welcome Aboard!

Hi --

I live in ND -- today my OS gave me the name of a Dr. at Mayo - in Rochester

- it is :

Dr. Dan Berry -- anyone heard of him? Apparently he is recommending him to

me - however I do live only 6 hours away so that may be the reason -- If

anyone knows of him - or his experience with resurfacing -- please let me

know OK?

THANKS to all of you who are so good to respond to my request for

information -- I want to send you all flowers!

Hi Barb:

Funny I just came across your email to Rick. I have an appointment with Dr.

Stachniw and Reva next Wed. to discuss my hip resurfacing. I have been

miserable for 2 years and have tried to hold back from THR. I found out about

this thru the news on local TV; and when I made an apt. with Dr. Stachniw's

colleage Dr. Gernant; he told me that Dr. Stachniw is now performing this. I

was so glad to hear this news. I have been told that he is good. Any feedback

would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Teri

P.S. I live in Monmouth, IL

(unknown)

Hi Rick,

Welcome to the group. This is where you will find your best

information on resurfacing. Reading old posts is a great way to get

some feel for what resurfacing is all about. Also go to

Activejoints.com and you'll be able to find all the doctors involved

in the resurfacing trials. I think my doctor is probably the

closest to you in Minnesota, I would recommend him very highly:

Dr. Myron Stachniw, M.D.

Galesburg Orthopedics

Galesburg, IL

Contact: Ms. Reva Hennenfent, RN

I welcome you to email me if I can help in any way.

Best,

Barb

How long will hip resurfacing last? Before mine, I asked the question of

Technologies (manufacturer of the Conserve Plus). They said that they

will only claim that, on average, it will last as long as a total hip

replacement. Personally, my hope is that it will last longer.

Hi ph

Here in the UK we have a medical body called NICE (National Institute for

Clinical Excellence). They recommend that resurfacing is made available to

younger patients. This is basically on the grounds that it will be more cost

effective for our NHS (National Health Service) as it is anticipated Resurfacing

is likely to outlast THR in these patients. There is no definitive data to

prove this - it is currently being collected - but for a learned body (NICE) to

state what they have is some recognition in itself.

All 3 main prosthesis are similar and I cannot believe that there will be much

difference in data for each.

Most of the World accepts this informative body (NICE) as publishing informative

and correct publications - therefore your hope along with many others that it

will last longer is a fairly safe bet. I say fairly because as we have recently

been reminded by ( - my best wishes go to you) things do go wrong.
