Elaine,

I sent the FEAT letter to but I could not access the URL that was in

that letter. If you have the article or a different URL send it to my

private address and I will try forwarding it to okay?

, I have to keep moving the bar of soap out of the way. They love it and

practically chew off my soapy legs. They are very weird dogs.

Elaine, You might very well think that there is lots of activity going

on there but there isn't they're all in scented bubble baths with their

dogs. How do you keep your dogs from eating the soap?

>>Anyway, right now I'm stable, but with feeding 1000 people with all

volunteer help in 3 weeks, I may get so stressed that I have to up my

dosage. If any of you are near here (Piedmont, CA, in the SF Bay Area), come

to the festival 9/24, 11 AM-2PM with a Cajun band afterwards till 3:30.

Hopefully, you'll get a great, organic lunch and have a good time.

Hey! That sounds fun! I'm in San Francisco. Maybe I'll drag my husband

along!! What's the address?

Thanks, Terry, I will! It sounds like fun! I'm always looking for

something to do...and if there's spicy food involved, more the better. And

it'll be great to meet a list-person! :P

Kari

>>>The festival is in " downtown " Piedmont. From the Bay Bridge, take 580E to

on St., take that up the hill until the street (changes name to

Oakland Ave. partway) ends at Highland Ave., and turn right. 2 blocks later

you'll see the park and the action. Parking shouldn't be a problem. Find me

when you get there (ask any volunteer), I'd like to say " hi " !

I do believe that sometimes we have cravings for foods we need. However,

when it comes ot chocolate, soda, etc., I think it's an endorphin/blood

sugar thing.

At 02:01 AM 09/12/2000 EDT, you wrote:

breathing " .

Gak! That doesn't sound promising.

> " to lose weight simply deduct one mini meal and add one half hour of

exercise to equal an approximate 500 calorie deficit. In a week you will

have lost one pound of fat. "

Well, if you exercise for half hour a day, you'd lose that weight anyway!

I'd imagine.

>By the way, the list of things to avoid include apricots, potatoes, rice,

bread, figs, mangoes and muffin, to name a few. Not cheese!

Mangoes? Why mangoes? Hm. This diet sounds a bit dodgy to me. Like the

Zone diet. It *sounds* good, in theory, but how healthy are you really? A

friend here at work *swears* by the zone diet, but to me, she looks a bit

anorexic and pale.

And dairy products!! Isn't that common sense, to avoid dairy products if

you want to lose weight? Pure fat!

That's pretty much what she means, 300 calorie mini-meals, and protein at

about 40%, fat 25%, and low glycemic carbs the remaining 35%.She has a

formula for figuring out how many mini-meals in a day, you multiply your

current weight by 11, divide that by 250 to get your basal metabolic rate,

or " the number of mini-meals you need to eat just to keep breathing " . Then

you add 250-500 calories for your activity level, and that is supposed to

tell you what you need to eat to maintain your current weight. Then she says

" to lose weight simply deduct one mini meal and add one half hour of

exercise to equal an approximate 500 calorie deficit. In a week you will

have lost one pound of fat. "

By the way, the list of things to avoid include apricots, potatoes, rice,

bread, figs, mangoes and muffin, to name a few. Not cheese!

You're right, . Common sense rules!

Don't you just wonder how they determined what the lethal dose is for

humans? Let's assume that's still classified.

This whole thing reminds me of my days in horticulture. When I went to

get my licence for spraying I thought maybe I should take a look at the

lethal dose LDs of some of the chemicals. Well....you would have thought

it was a state sceret. I finally got a list out of a friend who was a

big shot at Ag Canada. It is a wonder I wasn't arrested for having

classified information.

,

I just read a book called FDA follies that explained all about clinical

trials. Of course, I don't remember everything but there were several stages

drugs had to go through. Only in the event that there is no other drug that

has the same effect (like when some of the AIDS drugs came out) are things

accelerated. Otherwise, there are clinical trials involving say 100-200

patients in the early stage, and docs who participate in evaluating the

effects send in all the patient comments. When they move onto the last stage

of clinical trials the drugs are taken by several thousand patients. Maybe a

search for clinical trials would give you the exact criteria, but it really

is pretty rigid. The problem usually is that effects are monitored for only

about 5 years and some drugs take longer to show up, and recent studies

indicated that nearly 1/3 of patients who participate in clinical trials

don't actually take the meds. In some cases, people are compensated for being

in these trials.

,

Your right that not all drugs go through human trials. With many of the

vaccines out there now, they hit the market with no human studies of side

effects, safety issues etc. So how many are actually human tested anymore?

I do understand the point your making about drs. listening, but those that

do I think are few and far between.

Elaine,

You mean there is actually a book where the FDA admitted they screwed up,

more than once even? Where did you get it, I am curious...is there one on

the CDC also? Is there any mention of the recent findings about the

'conflicts of interest' of those on advisory boards and also holding stocks

in the drug companies?

Don't mean to be so sarcastic, not been a good week.

Jody,

I can't remember who wrote it but the title is FDA Follies and I found it at

my library. Each chapter deals with a different major screw up and explains

how they've lost credibility and how they're slowly working to regain it.

There's some good info in the GAO publications too.

Elaine,

They will never regain any credibility with me until they get rid of an

advisory board that holds stocks and investments in the drug companies they

are *suppose* to be double and triple checking on. It is how things like

saccharine slipped through the cracks, and Red Dye # 3...and nutrasweet was

rushed so quickly out to consumers and put in just about everything without

controlled long term testing...want to place any bets as to WHEN, not if, it

will be recalled? Unless of course they continue to bury the bad reactions

that are out there over this product as they have been doing for several

years now. Gee, can you tell I have no faith in this group as well as the

CDC anymore.

I will check at my library to see if they have the book though, I would

truely like to read it...thanks.

Jody

There may be another positive that we can accomplish also . Because of

the internet and our coming together, as well as the many other thyroid

groups out there, comparing all that we experience and knowing in our hearts

and minds we are not wrong, maybe with perserverence we can make enough

changes, starting with baby steps, to help educate our drs. to see that they

are not always right, there is no one right way to treat this and we are not

lab values. They need to learn how to treat our symptoms, not our labs.

Hopefully we can make that happen.

Jody

Elaine, when does your book come out, I thought it was this month, but can't

remember...and when and how can WE get it?

Well Jody, the only positive thing we may get out of this horrible
