i had to share this--i nursed until i was 15 mo old---i started talking(and

knowing what i was saying) at 9 months(i have trouble believing it but my

entire family swears)--so i was quite the linguist at a year and a half---we

have a picture in my baby book(ill try and snag it to scan) that was the

first picture i voluntarily explained to my mother--its a series of rounded

lines and circles on a small square of scrap paper--i handed it to my mom and

told her it was her " breasts bra and stomach " --i didnt say boob or

tummy--lol---breasts bra and stomach--lo--i was so cute!(lke i remember) but

my grandma was there at the time--so i know its not an embellished(sp?)

story---lol---breasts--that is what they are called! maybe i should start

clling them that to cade now so by th etime hes my age they wont be " hooters "

or " knockers " or " jugs " ---lol--alli

HI, I am new here, just joined the other day, but this is something I can

join in on, I have been kind of lost to what everyone is talking about!

My daughter is 16 months old and she just started asking to nurse. I have

always called them Chi Chi's, my husband is half Korean and Chi Chi means

breasts in Korean, and I like, and am more comfortable saying that rather

than something else.

And about 2 weeks ago she started say Di Di, for Chi Chi, and she will ponit

to them! And if she can reach them she will poke me and say Di Di, it really

is adorable.....LOL!!

Hope no one minds me jumping in here, but I think it has more to do with the

way it is percieved, rather than the word itself!

What I mean it that, to *ME*, when I hear someone say TITTY, I think of

something sexual, like a titty bar, or something.

I think it has to do with the way society has made breast such a sexual part

of being a women.

I had a similar discussion one day with a friend of my husbands who was

saying I was sexually abusing my child, and as he put it " if she was sucking

on my tits I HAD to be getting off on it " and in his mind this constitutes as

sexual abuse.

I told him WHY did he think God had put breast on women in the first place,

and I could BET him it surely was not just to please men!!

So again I think it had to do with the way we as women have been made to

think that breast are for the pleasure of men, and nothing more.

But hopefully as more women start, and continue breastfeeding we will have a

society of young girls who know better!

Sorry for jumping in and giving my 2 cents worth.....I hope I have not

offended anyone!

Thanks,

Oh wow Wendi, my daughter is also 1/4 but to me she looks more Korean than

that. Is it your husband's mother, or father that is full Korean?? I hope for

your sake, it is his father....LOL! Mine is my MIL, and OH could I tell you

some stories of a HUGE culture clash......LOL! If you would like you can go

to my webpage and see the outfit that she wore for her 1yr birthday! The URL

I think that is the right one....

I also would like for Lexi to learn as much as she can about her heritage, I

think it is a beautiful culture. I keep trying to get my husband to speak to

her in Korean, but he won't do it, he says it is hard for him to speak Korean

to her, when we usually speak English here at home. But so if he won't do it,

I am going to go and buy a few Korean tapes and play them all the time. I

would really like for her to be able to know it.

Hope we can talk more soon, it sounds like we have alot in common

Sure any time, I was raised around a very chauvanistic(sp?) father, and so it

has always had a sexual connotation for me. And like someone else said, I

think of T's & A, when ever I hear it.

But hopefully we can get out of that mindset as more women breastfeed, and

then the future men and women of America will know that there *IS* another

reason for women having breasts......LOL!

Here in the UK tit and titty are pretty offensive and considered swear words.

Most people refer to them as boobs. I always ask Verity if she wants milk. I

figure if she says that in public no one's going to know what she means!

I've never had a problem in public at all. He is 17 months and a lot of the

time we go out he is uninterested in nursing and has a cup instead. I make him

concentrate if he nurses, so he's usually way too busy for that. If he does ask

me he comes right to me and asks he never screams it across a room. Anyway he

is so shy that he isn't too far away from my side when were in public.

I could see why you think that is crude. I don't really get anything like that.

My dh said it a few times when my 7yo was born and then he grew out of it. I

guess for me titty has turned into its own word without all those other

connotations. I can also ask Zaid if he wants mama's milk and he knows what I am

talking about. He just still can't really say milk.

Other than " mama " , " dada " , or " nana " .... Gracie doesn't talk yet. I have

always been a

little conscious as to how I referred to our nursing times. I had a friend

who's dh used

to say " You want some titty " He did it in a joking playful way but the kid

picked up

on it and that's what he called it. It REALLY bothered me ! *L*

Anyway......... What I

say is " You want some mama's milk ? " Or I'll say " You want some milk ? "

Something like

that.... One day at the park I asked if she wanted some " mama's milk " and the

lady next to

me thought I said " LLAMA'S milk ! " *ROFL* I thought it was cute.... But

hey, people

drink cow and goat milk, why NOT llama ? Something to think about....

>anyone know the origin of calling breasts a " tit " ?

>

It might be of anglo-saxon origin. I know tit and titties was used in

anglo-saxon writings as early as 1400s (had to decipher a story written

for the English court). However, many anglo-saxon terms for body parts

were considered vulgar ever since the Norman invasion. So using them in

stories was sort of voyerism (sp?), at least that seemed to be the

impression I got. The term tits replaced or in addition to titties came

much later (I hazard to guess around 1800s). I studied word origins in

college, but this particular one was not part of the curriculum. :) For

more info, you could check an unabridged dictionary...it would probably

give the difinitive listing of usage <VBG>.
